The Undeniable Truth

Between the lines

Mai looked at hi but shook her head

“He kissed her”

“He doesn’t want her. He wants her and it may seem like he likes her because but really if you have noticed that he tries to make her look like you” Akito explained. Mai sighed

“Come home” he told her. She looked at him. Deep down she knew that she couldn’t turn him down and nodded. He took her hand and led her back to the Estate.

Later on, Akito watched as Mai slept. He leaned against the doorframe and let out a sigh. Just by her coming back, he knew that things were going to get better although slowly. Akito shut the door and walked back to his room and waited for Hatori to get back. He was going to make him see what he was doing to her.

The sound of someone walking down the hall stopped his thoughts. He stood up and opened the door just as Hatori was about to walk by

“She’s going to stay here. She’s sick”

“For how long this time Akito?”

“It all depends on you. Are you going to give up Ruri for her or are you going to make her suffer”

“She walked away without looking back when she left”

“She thought it would help the family but yet it only caused us all pain. Have you actually looked at her lately? She’s frail and pale. She looks like she could die any day” Akito told him. Hatori looked down the hall knowing that he had passed her room on the way down here

“She’s sleeping now. I had to make sure that she was fed and bandaged before she went to bed”

“Bandaged?”

“She had a few minor wounds on her stomach. Nothing too major” Akito told him as he grabbed his door, getting ready to shut it

“You might want to think about what you really want for the next few days but I don’t want you going anywhere near her until you decide” Akito ordered before shutting his door. Hatori just stood there for a few moments but in those few short moments, Mai opened her door and slowly walked out. She froze when she looked down to see him facing her. She looked down and began to walk the opposite way. From the clothes she was wearing, he noticed that the straps would fall because she was so skinny. The way she was now made his heart hurt. He knew what his heart wanted, what it craved and it was for Mai but he didn’t want to get hurt again. He didn’t want to see her walk away from him without looking back. His heart couldn’t take that again. He watched as she used the wall for support but it didn’t take long for her to fall to her knees. He was about to run over to her but Akito threw open his door and rushed to her. Hatori just stood there and watched as her small frame shook from her crying. Her free hand wrapped around her stomach where the bandages were. He didn’t know how Akito could possibly help her when he was sick himself but he did. Mai was the only one that got emotions out of him besides hate and anger, which surprised the entire family. Akito helped her up and walked her to the bathroom. He shut the door and stood outside it. He looked down the hall at Hatori who just turned around and walked to his room. He sat on his bed and held his head in his hands. How could he possibly trust her again? he didn’t think he could but he knew that what Akito said had to be done. He had figure out if he wanted to be with Ruri or Mai.

As the days went by, Mai stayed quiet but she wasn’t looking so sick. She started to look the way she did before she left but her hair was still short. She looked cute but with her new shy personality, everyone still worried about her. Kyo, Yuki, Haru and Momiji would go talk to her every now and then but she stayed in her room most days trying to avoid a run in with Hatori and Ruri. Shigure would stop by every so often to talk to her and try to make her smile but he would usually fail. All that occupied her mind was what Hatori and Ruri might be doing at that moment. The younger members that used to love her, soon feared her. She became angry and distant with everyone except Akito. She would start thinking about Hatori and Ruri or would see them walking about the courtyard and become so upset she’d start to break things. One day Tohru had stopped by to talk to her. She had sat at her window as Tohru talked to her. She heard Ruri’s high pitched laugh and watched as the two of them walked under the cherry blossoms. Anger boiled under her skin and she whipped around, grabbed onto Tohru’s hair tightly and forced her head to the ground

“You’re all ungrateful insects!” she yelled. Tears streamed down Tohru’s face onto the floor. Kyo tried to get her to let go but Mai punched him, making him move back

“Please” Tohru begged causing Mai to laugh

“You come into our lives and take everything that makes us happy away. You tell other’s about us and cause us more problems then you solve. You’re good-for-nothing, piece of shits. Now get out of my room before I make you” Mai yelled the last sentence as she threw Tohru backwards towards the door. Kyo watched as Mai held an emotionless face as she looked down at her and then turned around and sat at her window. Kyo sighed remembering that Tohru went through this with Akito before and now was going through it with Mai. But he also knew why she was being this way. Hatori had not gone near her nor has he given her a single glance when he has seen her. Hatori knows where her room is and knows that it’s killing her to see him with Ruri so she takes it out on everyone else around her. Kyo helped Tohru up and left with her. With one last look at Mai, he shut the door.On his way out, he saw Hatori kissing Ruri in front of Mai’s window. Kyo cleared his throat causing the two to look at them. They noticed the condition Tohru was in and rushed over. Ruri went to touch Tohru but she backed away from her

“Tohru?” Ruri asked confused but she just looked up at Ruri and Hatori with tears in her eyes

“It’s your fault she’s the way she is! Mai used to be so kind and now because of what you two are doing, she hates everyone and destroys everything. She has become so hateful that it hurts everyone that loved her. Doesn’t it hurt you that you kill her inside when you purposefully go in front of her window?” she asked Hatori who looked at her wide eyed but didn’t answer

“I know you still love her. The way you look at her when she leaves her room to come see Shigure. That hurt look in your eyes when she leaves to go back home. The way you hesitate going by her room and look at her door hoping she’ll open it and smile at you like she used to. The way you wait to hear that laugh of hers that you love. Hatori this might be out of line to say but don’t you think that you should do what your heart tells you?”

“And what is it telling me?”

“To go to her. To stop making her suffer the worst pain you can give her. She loves you Hatori, she always has and that’s why she’s acting the way she is now. Mai might have not made the right choice by leaving but she came back to try and fix things and in return she got hurt even worse. She’s a good person with a kind heart” Tohru said as she walked away. Kyo looked at Hatori with a glare

“I should hit you for hurting her the way you have. Yes, she screwed up but you know what? she came back to fix it only to get shit on by the one person she ever loved” he hissed and ran after Tohru. Hatori stood there with his head down. Ruri touched his arm as she noticed Mai come to the door in a pink Kimono with white flowers. Hatori had yet to noticed her. He pulled his arm away from Ruri and looked down at her

“Tohru was right. I do love Mai”

“But she left you high and dry as if she never cared for you”

“That may be but she came back and all I wanted was for her to suffer the same way I did. I shouldn’t have, I know that now. She’s the only thing I care about. The one thing that kept me going. I love her and trying to make you like her will never be. I want her. I want my Mai Valentine, not you” Hatori told her. Ruri looked at him with wide eyes and he looked up in the doorway to see Mai standing there, behind the doorframe.
