Don't Get Close
The Other Me Is Dead
Serena shrugged, “Sure.”
Joey nodded and began to lead the way. Serena wondered how he knew his way so well, but then remembered it was his hometown arena. He’d probably been here a few times before.
Serena followed behind him. She never realized how short he actually was. Their height difference was about the same as her and Mick’s.
“You’re short,” she stated bluntly.
Joey laughed, “So I’ve heard.”
Serena smiled, “How does it feel? To be short, I mean.” As strange as it sounded, she had always wondered. She was used to being taller than the people she surrounded herself with.
Joey turned and shrugged. He had never really thought about it. “You get neckaches if you spend most of your time around tall people.”
Serena couldn’t help but let out a chuckle. She assumed he was talking about James and Mick. Staring up at those guys would make her neck hurt too, even with her added height.
Joey found Serena quite amusing. He wondered why she had such weird questions, but then again, she seemed like a bit of a weird person. He had only offered to help her find her way because she would probably get lost. He already knew she had gotten lost trying to find the bathrooms, which were actually on the other side of the arena, and that was how she stumbled upon the guys. Not only that, but she needed to get back to her friend. Her friend that James seemed to have an interest in. Joey had a feeling James was the one Serena had watching her friend for her. Joey’s other reason for offering her his help was to confirm his suspicions about James.
“We should probably, you know, keep going. I’m worried about Lucy.” Serena said, her smile turning into a frown.
Joey nodded and started walking again. “The room is right up ahead.”
---------------------------------------
James knew Serena would probably be a while. He guessed she got lost and was currently trying to find her way back. At least, he hoped that was the case. The girl had woken up shortly after Serena left and didn’t know where she was. the girl couldn’t remember anything. One of the paramedics in the room said she must have amnesia.
Great.
“Um, excuse me,” she said, confusion evident in her green eyes, “didn’t you say I came here with a friend? Where is she?”
James had already explained to her where she was and who she came with. The girl didn’t recall ever knowing someone named Serena, and she didn’t know who Slipknot was either. She told James he looked familiar, like she had seen him before. When he explained to her about his band she remained clueless. That’s when he assumed something was wrong.
And he was right.
“She should be back shortly,” James replied. He hoped Serena got here soon. The paramedic he had spoken to told him that being around familiar people and places were the only way to trigger her memory back, which he thought Serena could help with.
“So,” she said, attempting to make the atmosphere less awkward, “you said your name was James?”
“Yep.”
“And you’re in Slipknot, the band I came to see?”
“Yep.”
She nodded her head, absorbing thennew information. She was taking it surprisingly well. According to the crew in the room, Serena had told them to be prepared if she started yelling and throwing things when she woke up. Apparently that was how she dealt with stress.
James assumed she had a bit of a temper.
He looked up to see Serena walk into the room with Joey behind her. How did she find Joey?
“Hey,” Joey said, tilting his head in James’ direction.
James nodded back and looked over at Serena, who looked rather embarrassed. “I see you found my band.”
She smiled innocently before spotting her friend. “Lucy! You woke up!”
The girl, whose name appeared to be Lucy, looked around the room. “Who’s Lucy?” she asked James.
Serena looked offended. “Lucy is your name. Don’t you know that?”
“I guess I do now,” she shrugged, “you must be Serena, the girl I came here with?”
“She has amnesia,” James explained.
Serena’s mouth went into an ‘o’ shape. From behind her James could see Joey looking between the girls with sympathy.
Lucy followed James’ gaze and looked at Joey. “Your outfit…are you in the same band as James?”
Joey smiled and nodded. He may have taken his mask off but his concert attire was still on, making it obvious to anyone but Lucy who he was.
“We should probably be getting back, James,” Joey said, “the guys are wondering what happened to you.”
James sighed and got up off his chair. He didn’t care to explain this to the guys, it would take forever and they would wrongly assume things. “I suppose.”
Lucy looked at James sadly. She had woken up not knowing where she was or even who she was and he had been patient and explained it to her. She understood she was very close with that other girl, Serena, and she would help her gain her memory back, but something made her want James to stay too. Even though he looked quite strange with his mask and unusual outfit, he seemed nice.
Serena stared at Lucy with her mouth slightly open. This wasn’t Lucy at all! She wasn’t usually this nice to people, and Serena was sure she had never seen Lucy look at someone that sadly before. She could tell Lucy didn’t want James to go, which was understandable. He was the only thing she knew at this point, even if Serena was closer to her than Lucy’s own family.
Finally Lucy spoke up, “Hey, uh, James?”
He turned to look at her.
“Can we come with you?”
Joey nodded and began to lead the way. Serena wondered how he knew his way so well, but then remembered it was his hometown arena. He’d probably been here a few times before.
