My Girl

Is This Okay?

The time seemed to tick by slower than usual as I tapped my pencil on my binder in History class. The teacher seemed uninterested in his speech, just like all of his students in the class. I glanced over at Sylvia, who was too busy texting someone under her desk.

“Mr. Underwood?” I raised my hand in the air, cutting off the teacher mid-sentence. He glanced at me through his thick glasses and nodded his head once. “Who was the attempted assassinator of Ronald Reagan?”

Sylvia tucked her phone away and glanced at me. “No one cares.”

It was two days after she had found about Nick and I and she still couldn’t seem to get over our argument. I had tried to apologize to her as much as I could, but she didn’t even take that. Every Friday we had golf meets, and since Sylvia and I were partners, I was hoping she would somehow get over this by tonight.

The bell rang and I missed Mr. Underwood’s answer to my question, but I didn’t care. I hopped up from my desk and walked quickly to the classroom door. Something ran into my left shoulder and I turned away, coming face to face with Parker Johnson, Arielle’s older brother. He smiled through his dark shaggy brown hair and got out of my way.

“Someone’s in a hurry.” The way he winked my way would usually make my heart run wild, but I just smiled politely at him and walked out.

“To go hang out with her little Meadow Wood boyfriend.” Sylvia muttered. I glanced behind me and shot her a look, but she ignored it and continued to walk down the hallway. Her hair was up in a ponytail again, bobbing behind her as if it had a mind of it’s own.

“That kid that was at your house yesterday, right?” It was only Parker and I in the classroom now, not including Mr. Underwood, who was checking his e-mail at his desk.

I froze, trying to think how he would know that. Did Sylvia see? Did she already tell everyone in the school about, including the upperclassmen?

“I saw you yesterday, I was outside with Arielle.” Parker cleared up my confusion. I smiled and nodded my head.

“Right. I forgot.” I adjusted my bag across my shoulder as we walked toward the back entrance of the school. I was supposed to meet Nick there, since I was going to his house after school and before the golf meet. “Nick’s not my boyfriend.”

Parker laughed and held the door open for me. “I’ve learned to not believe anything Sylvia Peters says.” Even though she was my friend, and everything, I laughed. He was so right.

As we walked outside, I saw Nick’s car parked a few feet away. Parker followed my gaze and then glanced back at me.

“That’s him?” He guessed. I nodded. He smiled and started to walk the other way. “Cool. Have a nice weekend.”

I said bye to him too and walked to the passenger seat of the car, hearing the loud shouts of my classmates from the front lobby of the school. Parker didn’t seem to care about Nick, was that the same case with everyone else? Or were they all like Sylvia, proclaiming it to be some sort of sin?

“Hey.” Nick greeted me as I sat down in the seat next to him. I got out of my trance and smiled over at him, resting my bag underneath me on the cars floor.

“Hey.” Nick put his car in reverse and rested his hand on the back of my chair so he could see out the back window.

“Do you want to drive by your house to get your golf stuff? Joe and I could drive you.” We took the back way from the school and Nick slowed the car down as I began to answer.

“Uhm, sure.” I nodded my head and watched as he turned the steering wheel quickly, making his way toward my neighborhood.

“Do you think we could turn the air up? It’s hot out today.” I asked, reaching out for the air conditioner button on the dashboard. Nick stared out the window and put his hand out to it at the same time, our fingers crashed together.

“Oh.” Nick looked away from the road and smiled at our hands. “My bad.” He still looked down at our hands, which were awkwardly sitting side by side in the compartment between the two of us. Dragging his hand across the surface, he put his hand on top of mine and interlocked our fingers. “Is this okay?”

I smiled. Of course he would ask. “More than okay.”

Nick smiled wider, looking back up at the road. “Good.”

I felt my cheeks burn, although touching Nick in such a little way made me feel so comfortable, and almost, just for a minute, made forgot about how wrong this could truly be.

We thank you all for reading and please please comment! Rachael was a dork and commented on this *rolls eyes* but yes... that was her. JonasIsLifex3 in case you were wondering.
