Green Eyes

”And remember, what will happen has to happen.”

No. I wouldn’t let it.

Cupping his cheeks with my hands, I let out a desperate sob. “No, Johnny, stay with me! You have to stay with me!” I sobbed, my tears falling onto the bloody ground. “Don’t die, Johnny, I need you,” I whispered, my blue eyes desperately searching his own for the light that I had become so used to.

His whole face was contorted with pain as he looked at me, his shaking hand desperately seeking out my own. Wrapping it around my hand, he let out a pained grunt, squeezing my hand tightly. He was trying to bring me comfort. He was dying in a pool of his own blood, and he was still trying to make sure that I was okay.

And in that moment, I loved him more than I had ever loved anyone before. And I knew that I had to do anything I could, anything in my power to keep him alive.

Uncaring of the blood that was flowing, I pulled him into my arms, burying his head into my chest. My breaths came out in ragged pants against his cheeks, errant strands of my chocolate hair straying against his face.

I kissed the top of his head, not bothered by the blood that drowned my hands. Cries continued to leave my lips, tears pouring down my face endlessly and falling onto the ground below. I could hear the cries of others as they made their way towards us, and I could feel them fighting around us. But all that mattered then was Johnny, and the knowledge that I couldn’t let him die. I couldn’t live without him.

“Johnny, please,” I begged, my heart pained as I looked at him. “I love you, Johnny, I need you so much!” I sobbed, cupping his cheeks with my hands and forcing his eyes to look into mine. His eyes seemed to be unfocused and clouded with pain as they looked at me, and shakily he wrapped his arms around my body. Letting out a grunt of pain, he gritted his teeth, but his eyes never left my own.

“E-Everything will b-be alright, K-Kayla,” he grunted, licking his dry lips, his face contorted with pain. He fell further into my body, letting out a cry.

I shook my head, clutching at him as tears poured down my face. “No it won’t, Johnny! You’re dying! And it’s m-my faul-“

He forced my eyes to his, his hands twitching against my cheeks but determined to stay there. “I d-don’t regret i-it for a s-second,” he groaned, forcing his lips into a smile.

My heart was breaking. Because I knew that I had never met anybody as selfless and as beautiful as the man that was now dying in my arms.

I knew that Zacky was watching. I could feel his eyes probing into the back of my head, and I could feel the tears trailing down his cheeks as he fought. He was in pain for two reasons, for one, that his friend was dying, and for two, because of me. It was as if he never knew just how much I cared for the man in my arms, and it was tearing him apart. I could feel the pain in his heart; it was merged along with my own.

A rippling cry broke out across the field, and I heard shouts of disbelief coming from all around me. Looking up, I sought out the source of the commotion, but I was unable to see a thing.

It was only when it left Zacky’s mouth did I know what it was.

“Degan,” he breathed in awe.

It seemed as if every vampire in the field was caught in a trance, and my eyes suddenly caught on a figure walking into the field. Every eye followed him as he walked, and my mouth dropped open at the sight of him.

He was without a doubt the most beautiful vampire I had ever seen. It wasn’t because I was attracted to him, or because I had a crush on him, but his stance and his aura just screamed serenity and beauty.

He had long, brown hair, which was swept in front of his pearly green eyes. His eyes seemed to glow with both knowledge and strength as he walked, and instead of his skin being pale like the others it was golden, as if he had been in the sun for years. His body radiated strength, and his mouth was set in a thin line, looking out at the area around him.

I could see the admiration and happiness in Zacky’s eyes as he watched him, and the sight of it made me smile.

His eyes snapped to me, and suddenly, he was smiling. In the blink of an eye he was next to me, looking down at me as if he was in awe of what he was seeing. “Kayla Stevens,” he said softly, his voice sounding like honey as it met my ears. “It is so nice to finally meet you.”

He held out a hand to me, and hesitantly I reached out, my hand covered in blood as I shook his. A spark set through me at the touch and my eyes widened, and at seeing this he let out a small laugh. “I forgot you could feel that. I have a small electric current running through my body at all times; it helps me make a shield when needed. Vampires can’t feel it, you, however…,” he trailed off, smiling at me.

Pulling his hand away, he chuckled bitterly at the sight of blood. Letting out a sigh and shaking his hair out of his eyes, he knelt down, his eyes staring straight into mine. “Your friend will be okay, little one,” he said quietly, a twinkle in his eyes as he smiled.

My heart soared as I heard this, and I found myself smiling too. “Are you sure?” I whispered, hugging Johnny’s body tighter against me.

He smiled and placed his hand on Johnny’s body, and I could see the way Johnny’s eyes, though clouded, shone with admiration. “You have done such great things, Johnny Seward,” he said kindly, his hand shaking as he placed it over his wound.

Johnny’s eyes sparkled as he said this, and he slowly nodded at him, unable to speak. I let out a cry as his eyes slowly shut, and his body collapsed against mine. “Johnny?”

I heard laughter behind me, and a hand being placed on my shoulder. I looked up and my eyes met his green ones, which were sparkling, the sun seeming to shine from behind him, lighting him up as if he was an angel. “He is safe, Kayla. He needs to rest, and then he will be fine.”

In an instant, Jimmy was beside me, grabbing Johnny’s body from my arms and disappearing, taking his body with him. Unsure how to react, I slowly stood up, my blue eyes weary as I looked at Degan. Unable to stop myself, I wrapped my arms around him, not caring that he froze.

Slowly, he began to hug me back, before pulling away. “Now, we have a fight to win, do we not?”

Smiling softly, I nodded before stepping away form him. Letting out a loud, echoing cry, he turned away, charging into the mass of bodies. All around me, cries of agreeance left my friends mouths, and they too charged after him.

Zacky was last to leave, his eyes still sad and weary as they regarded me, but holding love nevertheless. But I could see it shining in his emerald orbs, that he had never been as proud of me as he was then. Degan meant a lot to him; he was his teacher, the closest thing he had to a father, and the fact that we had gotten along so well had made him proud. I smiled at him, whispering the three words that caused him to smile too. Then he turned around, and charged.

There was nothing quite like watching Degan fight. Not only could he disappear and appear wherever he wanted, but he could create force fields, control the electricity flowing through his body and he seemed to be able to control the minds of those around him. He was able to take on a group of men all at once, his movements sharp and graceful, and utterly deadly.

It seemed to happen all at once. A deafening rip was heard and all eyes turned to the centre of the field, cries leaving everyone’s mouths. Because in the middle of the field sat a head, torn away from the rest of the body, a head of black hair, and dull, lifeless red eyes staring into nothing.

Vercro. He was dead. And beside his body, with a triumphant grin on his face, was Degan.

“No!” came a cry, and Layton came stumbling through, running over to his master’s side. Letting out a growl, he ran forwards, trying to attack Degan’s towering body.

Letting out a chuckle, the man placed his hands around Layton’s neck, getting ready to tear. “Stop!”

Zacky was running forwards, stopping beside the pair. Their eyes met and for a split second I could see the connection in them, the bond of two brothers. “It’s personal. Let me,” he said gruffly, giving Degan a small smile.

With one hand clenched around Layton’s waist, he nodded, handing the struggling vampire to Zacky. Wrapping his arms around his neck, Zacky held him tightly, his eyes shining with anger. “I’ll give it to you; you’re a strong vampire. You hold your own, and you’re incredibly powerful and deceiving,” he stopped, looking back at Brian and Sammi who were watching, hand in hand. “But you were stupid enough to make one silly mistake.” He turned around, his eyes meeting mine, and I had never seen as much love in them as I did then. “You touched Kayla. You hurt her, and you bit her. And for that, I’m sorry, but you have to die,” he snarled, and ignoring the pleas that left the vampire’s mouth he tore apart his neck.

Silence pursued us, not a single word being uttered from any person’s mouth. Then slowly, one by one, the remaining vampires began retreating, turning around and running as fast as they could away from the fields. And suddenly I was running towards Zacky, tears leaving my eyes, my heart clenching desperately. Catching my eyes, he met me half way, and time seemed to stop as we stared into each other’s eyes, our faces just inches form each other’s. Breathing heavily, he cupped my cheeks with his cold, pale hands, and brought my lips against his.

And it felt like I was flying. Every fear I had left me, and all I knew was the love that I was feeling at that moment. Everything else left me until it was just me and him, and nothing else existed.

And when we pulled away, I knew that I had been wrong. I had never known love as I did at that moment, staring into his blood-stained eyes. “I love you so much, Kayla,” he breathed, his nose caressing my own. “So much.”

I smiled slightly, leaning forwards to place a soft, lingering kiss on his lips. “I love you too, Zacky. You’re my green eyes.”

He smiled, pulling away slightly and looking into my eyes. “Your what?” he chuckled, his lips pulling up into a smile.

I blushed, lowering my eyes to the floor. “Nothing.”

And then he was kissing me again, and my heart was beating faster than it ever had before.

I could no longer feel the danger surrounding us, only the happiness. I was surrounded by those I loved, the people that had saved and made my life in so many ways. They were my family, and with them was my home.

We pulled away, our eyes twinkling as we stared at each other. “Zacky,” came a voice from behind us, breaking us out of our trance.

He turned around, smiling when he caught sight of Degan. Zacky held out his hand to him, and Degan smiled and said something before pulling him into a hug.

They pulled away, and words were exchanged before Zacky stepped back. Degan looked up, his eyes meeting mine, and he smiled. “It was nice meeting you, Kayla. And the rest of you; you should all be proud.”

I opened my mouth to reply, but it was too late. With one last smile, he was gone; any evidence of him every being there invisible save for the dead bodies lying all around us.

Only an epilogue left, my faithful readers. It's going to be weird not having to update it any more, it's been going for a while.

I'll do the thank yous in the next chapter, because after that it's good bye.

So, since I know the drill - that no one bothers to comment on the last chapter - how about one last try?

Let's see how much feedback I get, haha :)

Hey! I didn't kill Johnny!
