Status: You guys were great! Thank you! Be on the look out for my new story, Bottom of the Bottle.
The Forbidden Fruit
Chapter 7
“This is good spaghetti.” I smiled, slurping a noodle.
“Well, most of it is from the box, so, it should be good.” He laughed, bouncing Troy on his knee.
“Well, you still cook it good.” I shrugged, eating another noodle.
“Then thank you, I guess.” Derrick smiled, eating some more pasta.
“So are you glad today’s Friday?” I asked, setting my plate in the sink.
“Yes and no. Yes because I don’t work tomorrow, but no because I have a lot of grading to do.”
“That sucks. I just have some math to do.”
“That sucks even more, dude!” Derrick mocked me.
“Stop!” I smiled and laughed, “Teenagers don’t talk like that.”
“I know, Maria, I’m not that old.”
“How old are you?” I asked, putting my elbow on the counter top and resting my head in my palm.
“That’s confidential.” He smiled slyly.
“Come on! You know how old I am.”
“Fine.” He sighed, “I’m 27.”
“Wowza!” I exclaimed, “Straight out of college.”
“Yeah, well, kind of. I’m doing night school next year.”
“Then you’ll need me all the time.” I said.
“What?” He asked, shocked.
“For baby-sitting?” I asked slowly.
“Oh, right.” Derrick sighed and then laughed.
“So what is there to do here?” I asked, looking around.
“Well, not much. I just have the TV and the internet. Oh, and baby toys.”
“Those are my favorite!” I exclaimed, laughing.
“Ha. Ha.” Derrick said sarcastically.
“I guess we’ll watch TV then.” I shrugged, picking up Troy and walking over to the couch and gently sat down.
“You act like he’s your own.” Derrick said, sitting next to me.
“I guess so.” I shrugged, watching Troy grab my finger, “Well I’ve been around a lot of babies.”
“Where at?”
“Well I used to baby-sit at the church nursery and my Mom’s friend’s had a lot of babies.”
He nodded, and then started thinking intently.
“Where did you live before here?” He asked me.
“Well, we usually move around a lot. But I lived in Ohio.”
“That’s far from here.”
“I know. Have you always lived here?”
“Yeah, born and raised.”
“That’s cool. I wish I lived in the same spot all of my life.”
“It’s really boring if you live in a small town like this.”
“Piedmont is not a small town.” I laughed, tickling Troy.
“I would call it a small town.”
“Piedmont has a high school, it’s not small.”
“Well, to me it is. Anyway, what brought you to Virginia?”
“My Mom.” I joked, but stopped laughing when he playfully glared at me, “I don’t know, really. One day I got home and all of my things were packed.”
“I can tell your Mom isn’t your favorite person.”
“Is it that obvious?” I asked, laughing.
“Only because I know you so well.” He joked.

“I had a lot of fun.” I smiled, setting Troy back into his crib.
“I did too. Thanks for baby-sitting on such short notice.”
“No problem. I had nothing to do, anyway.” I laughed, picking up my purse from the loveseat.
“I’ll see you on Monday, Maria.” Derrick said, opening up the door for me.
“Maybe I’ll see you first.” I smiled, leaning on the door frame.
“That might be a possibility.”
“No, it is a possibility.” He smiled at me.
“You should be a lawyer.”
“Nah, I don’t like all that crime stuff.”
“You seem like a criminal.” He joked.
“Yeah, what makes me seem like a criminal?” I asked, smiling brightly.
“Because you stole my heart.”
Both of our eyes widened.
