Anna Baker hasn't spoken a word to anyone besides her best friend Adam Briggs since the death of her sister Lesley in the 8th grade. It was just an accident. They were fooling around and it was only a dare. Anna didn't know her sister couldn't swim. She didn't know that Lesley would drown.

Anna hates herself. She has no care for her appearance, school work, family, anyone. The only person she will talk to is Adam. But even Adam finds himself struggling to get words out of Anna's mouth.

There is only one boy who could possibly change that.
