Returning to You

Jessica’s POV

I stood at the counter taking a deep breath as I put on a happy face. The incidents were freaking me out and I didn’t know what to do any more, I was scared to go out sometimes in case something happened and I sure as hell wasn’t taking Braden out anywhere unless Brian was with me.
Making sure my smile was firmly on I stepped out of the kitchen and through to the back yard where I was putting together a little party for everyone as they all planned to come back from their travels at the same time. Val was here to help and currently she was setting up the picnic tables that I had gotten from Brian’s dad next door.
She smiled over at me
“hey how are you doing?” I shrugged
“I’m ok really but thanks for asking” Val frowned but nodded and went back to setting the tables up while I moved to go and make sure that there were enough chairs for everyone; Braden swotting at a fish mobile in the Moses basket I had set up.
Brian and Matt came out of the house laughing as they carried the bag of coal they had gotten from Papa Gates. I looked up and smiled at the sight before carrying on with everything while they got to work setting up the barbeque.
Ten minutes later Brian walked over to me and hugged me, kissing my head lightly
“hey honey, how are you doing?” I smiled at him
“I’m holding up Brian, you guys gonna go and get the meat and beer?” Brian nodded with a small smile
“yeah Matt and I figured that the one case we have left in the house won’t be enough, especially with Jimmy here” I giggled and shook my head
“definitely not” Brian nodded
“yeah so we are gonna head out now, do you need anything?” I bit my lip thinking
“umm could you get more diapers, I think we’re nearly out” he nodded
“of course” he then gave me a lingering kiss before he and Matt walked out of the garden.
Val and I finished setting up and just sat down talking for a while about what we thought the others night have been up to while they were gone and I fed Braden as well.
Just as I finished burping him I could hear the phone ringing in the house. I sighed and smiled apologetically at Val
“do you mind holding him?” Val shook her head and her eyes lit up slightly as she reached out and plucked him from me. I got to my feet chuckling knowing that Val would want kids very soon.
Walking into the house I dropped the puked on towel in a basket I kept in the kitchen for them and moved over to the phone.
Picking it up I asked
“hello who is this?” a voice chuckled on the other end
“you know who this is” a shiver went up my spine and I gripped the phone tighter, the voice was distorted like they held a cloth over the receiver but I could still tell it was a woman speaking
“yes I know who this is”
“good, now I have a question”
“what?”
“do you love Brian?” I gripped the phone tighter and glared at the wall, I could feel my blood pressure rising
“you stay the hell away from Brian!” the voice chuckled again
“why should I bitch?”
“you touch him and I swear to god I will hunt you down and rip you to pieces” the voice chuckled again before the dial tone sounded.
I stared at the phone in shock for a moment before I pressed redial and tried to get them back on
“I’m sorry the number you have called is unavailable” I screamed in frustration and slammed the phone down on the receiver. As I pulled my hand away I noticed I was shaking.
I walked out back to Val and as she looked up hearing me approach she gasped and put Braden in the basket before hurrying to me and leading me towards a seat. Sitting me down she knelt in front of me and asked worried
“what happened?” I pressed a shaking hand to my mouth and shook my head as I spoke
“it was her again, she asked if I loved Brian then hung up” I looked right into Val’s eyes “what if she hurt him?” Val frowned
“I’m sure she hasn’t, did you try ringing him?” I shook my head and Val took out her phone and dialled Brian’s number, seconds later I heard his ring tone going off in the house. Val grunted in annoyance and said
“I know Matt hasn’t got his either as it’s in my bag” she then looked at me and gripped my hands “i promise you that nothing has happened to them” I just shook my head and sat there silently.
We sat in silence until I heard a car door slam shut and some raised voices, I got to my feet and stared at the back door tensely.
As soon as Brian stepped onto the back porch I was running across the yard towards him. Seeing me coming he dropped the bags he had and caught me as I flew into his arms. Clutching me tightly he asked
“what’s going on?” I just sobbed into his shirt and let Val explain as she came over.
When she had finished I could feel all of Brian’s muscles tense and he growled
“this is going too far, she is getting out of line and I’m calling the police again” Brian carried me into the house and cradled me to him as he picked up the phone and called the police.
He outlined what happened and they said they would make a note of it and add it to the file which didn’t make Brian or I any happier but at least it was something.
Val was upset about it though and Matt held her as she wondered why her sister was doing this and what the hell had happened to the sister she grew up with, I wanted to comfort her but I didn’t really know how to right now.
I cradled Braden in my arms as Brian hugged me to him in a seat, feeling safer just being near him and I wanted Braden with me for safety too.
