Dead in the Water

I Was Trying To Protect You

(Nonnie’s POV)

“She’s waking up again,” I heard another familiar voice say. I opened my eyes to see Frank and Mikey standing over me. I shot up only I didn’t try to run this time. If they wanted me dead I would already be dead. I started to get out of the bed.

“Non, don’t make me put you back to sleep, I don’t wanna have to carry you back to your friends. They will most likely try to kill me any way.” Frank warned as I stopped moving.

“Mikey you knew and you didn’t tell me?” I said looking at him. He had cut back his hair and wasn‘t wearing his glasses so I could see his brown eyes. He hasn‘t been the same since Gerard, his brother died. “You saw me crying at his funeral and you didn’t tell me?” He looked at Frank for help.

“I told them not to tell you,” Frank spoke up for him.

“Wait them? Why Frank?” It hurt to think that he wouldn’t trust me with something this big.

“It was for your own protection.” He said sitting down on the bed next to me. “Mikey can you give us a minute?” He asked.

I watched as Mikey left the room. Now that I wasn’t freaking out I was able to get a good look at him. He looked exactly the same as when I last saw him. His hair was still shoulder length with a slight curl, and his eyes were still green but now they had an unnatural glow and he was deathly pale. Before I could think about what I was doing I threw my arms around him and he wrapped his around me.

“Frank you should have come to me.” he smoothed down my hair with his hand.

“I was trying to protect you from all of this. If I had known you would find the one group of people in this whole city that went slaying too I wouldn’t have left you.”

“How did this happen?” I asked. He pulled away from me.

“I can show you, but I…”

“Show me.” I said interrupting his warning. He took both my hands into his.

“Take a deep breath.” I did as he said and suddenly we were walking into a huge house party.

I could smell the stale beer and cigarette smoke. I watched as he looked around the room, he didn’t see who he was looking for so he started asking around for Brendon. I knew he had a stake in his back pocket was it to kill Brendon? Someone said something about Brendon being out back, so that’s where he went. He walked out back and almost immediately was surrounded by five men wearing funny clothes. I recognized them as dandies, Beckett’s men.

“Frank run,” I said. “Frank don’t try to fight, run.” I tried to grab his arm but my hand went right through him. He started fighting, I tried to help by fighting off the two who were coming up behind him, but all of my hits went right through them. He staked one of them and the other four came at him all at once. Finally two of the men held him while a third bit into his neck.

“No!” I watched helplessly as they drained him almost completely. Then one of them bit into his own wrist and put it to Frank’s lips. He was too weak to refuse and started to drink hungrily. Until his whole body began to spasm. It looked very painful, then his whole body went limp. I knew he was dead at that moment. I tried to put my hand on his cheek.

“What are you doing?” someone yelled from behind me, I turned to see Beckett. He walked right through me causing me to shiver at his low body temperature. “I said no one without my approval.” he rolled his eyes. “Dump him some where in the middle of the park. There’s no shade when the sun comes up, it will dispose of the body.” I watched as they dragged an unconscious Frank away. Frank let go of my hands and I sat there trying to catch my breath.

“Mikey, Bob, and Ray found me. They didn’t know that I was alive, they just took me to the morgue where a vampire named…”

“Sisky?” I cut in.

“Yeah, he could sense me and decided to see if I was good or bad by waking me up. He gave me a packet of blood. Everything came rushing back to me as I drank it and I remembered you. I hadn’t told you about my going out after you were sleep. I was trying to help Brendon break free of Williams power. William is the one who killed Gerard. I knew my life was over, I couldn‘t stand for you to see me this way. So I had him call you down to id my body. I had them put together a funeral and everything. I wanted you to move on.”

“Was it you?” I asked.

“Was what me?”

“For a long time after you…died. I felt as though I was being followed. It only stopped a few days before I met Joe.”

“I kept an eye on you. You never knew vampires existed. I knew what dangers lurked the night and I wanted to make sure you were okay. I noticed Joe watching you as I was waiting for you to walk home one night outside the diner. I knew you were about to move on from me so…” this wasn’t a good situation to be in. I loved Joe, but I was drawn to Frank. I always have been drawn to him. There was a knock on the door.

“The sun is down. We better get her back to her friends they are probably worried.” Mikey said.

“How did you guys know where we would be last night?” I asked.

“We didn’t it just happened to be where we were patrolling last night. I saw you were in over your head and I couldn’t let…” it was like he couldn’t say what would have happened if he hadn‘t been there. “We should go,” he stood up and offered me his hand. I took it and then we headed out to Mikey’s car.

“You’re going to have to give us directions,” I just nodded. How was I going to explain this to everyone else?
