It Wasn't Meant To Turn Out Like This

Worth It in the End

Brian glanced across his SUV at Mayza as he pulled into Matt’s crowded driveway. She sat with her head resting gently against the door frame, her hair pushed back from her face by the constant ocean breeze sweeping in through her open passenger side window. Riding in a car sometimes made her feel nauseous, but having her window open helped a lot. Her right hand rested gently on top of her bulging stomach. Brian pulled into one of the few empty spots left in the driveway, parking where his SUV sat halfway on the driveway and halfway in the front yard.

Matt and Val were hosting a barbeque in honor of Matt’s birthday. For Brian’s birthday, they had a real small pot luck-style get-together to put as little strain on Mayza as possible. Even then, she had been fatigued, even though her stomach had been slightly smaller.

Mayza had just started her maternity leave from work earlier in the week. She had been extremely grateful, finding it harder and harder to crawl out of bed in the morning as her pregnancy progressed. Dr. Wright said during their last visit a few weeks before that Mayza would probably need to be put on bed rest for the last two months. Mayza had admitted to Brian afterward that she wouldn’t mind getting orders from a doctor to sleep as much as possible and stay home all the time.

Brian walked around the hood of his vehicle as Mayza pushed her door open. He stepped up to her and offered his hands to help her out of the tall vehicle. Mayza turned to face Brian, resting her hands inside his as she gingerly slid out of the SUV. She landed on the grass and stepped out of the way so Brian could close her door behind her.

If Mayza was a human having a normal human baby, she would look as though she was about to have the baby any minute now. Much to Mayza’s dismay, however, she was only six months along. According to Dr. Wright, the baby was developing like a human baby, and she speculated that the baby would be the size of a normal human baby when it was born. Depending on how much bigger the baby ended up getting, Dr. Wright told them she wouldn’t even try for a vaginal birth; a Cesarean section would be the only option.

They let themselves into Matt’s house, winding through the house in the direction of the backyard. They emerged out the back door onto the large deck to find everyone already there.

“Jesus Christ!” Jimmy cried out upon seeing Mayza. “Mayza, are you sure you aren’t pregnant with the spawn of some alien?”

Mayza smiled as Brian led the way over to two empty seats among the group. “Anything is possible with Brian’s sperm.” Mayza sank down into the chair.

Val walked over from where she stood next to Matt at the grill, no doubt making sure he cooked the meat to everybody’s specifications, and asked Mayza, “Can I feel?” She motioned towards Mayza’s stomach and Mayza nodded, completely unperturbed by everyone’s constant desire to feel her stomach.

The instant Val’s hand touched Mayza’s stomach, the baby inside gave a good, hearty kick right where Val’s hand rested. Val jerked her hand away with a gasp. Mayza grinned at the look of shock and wonder on her face as Val hesitantly pressed her palm gently to Mayza’s stomach again. The baby kicked her again.

“She likes new people,” Mayza said with a smile.

Val hurried over to Matt and dragged him away from the grill. “Feel this!” she demanded, grabbing Matt’s wrist and resting his hand on Mayza’s stomach. The baby kicked Matt’s hand hard, and Mayza grimaced. That kick actually hurt.

“Want a kid yet?” Val asked, grinning at Matt’s look of wonder.

“Not this little bastard, you don’t,” Mayza answered, rubbing her stomach lovingly. Matt went back to the grill and Lacey asked how the pregnancy was going so far.

“Roughly,” Mayza sighed. “I can’t remember the last time I slept all the way through the night. The mood swings have lessened at least, and I don’t feel sick as much. My back kills, my knees hurt, even my stomach hurts because of how much the baby is stretching my skin. I have stretch marks the size of Route 66. And as you can see, I’m the size of a trailer park and still growing.”

“Oh, but you’ll have a gorgeous baby girl at the end,” Leana pointed out.

“Yeah, yeah we will,” Mayza agreed, smiling over at Brian. “It will be worth it in the end when I’m holding our daughter for the first time.”

Only 4 chapters left!

Okay, here's the plan. Once I finish writing the two stories I'm working on now, I am going to be taking a short break from writing. I am so writer blocked right now. I don't even know how I'm getting updates out. Once I come back from my short break (it'll be really short. I can't go too long without writing), I'll be posting some original fictions because I have a few ideas for some and I'm a little bored with fanfics at the moment. =}
