The Black Limousine

Chapter 2

Beth hadn’t tried to turned me into a Barbie-doll for the rest of the day. Keith kept “making moves” on me, and Luke would always get him to back off. Anna and Beth had yet to stop their argument about who was better, so for the entire day I had sang and played until my fingers and voice felt raw. And I’m pretty sure Luke felt the same way.

“That’s it! Beth, Anna! I will frickin’ pay you to not make us do another performance!”, Luke says, glaring.

“I’ll help!”, I say desperately.

“No!!”, they yell together. We groan together.

“The only way is to have them sing together.”, Anna says in her British accent.

“Agreed,” Beth says seriously. Me and Luke exchange worried glances. “What was that song you were singing earlier?”

“Umm …”, I say, pulling out my notebook from the back pocket of my blue jeans.
“You know it’s true.
Don’t fight it,
Don’t deny it.
Just accept the truth,
It’s good for you.

“If you can’t hear me,
Then that’s too bad for you.
I’m here to stay,
But not next to you.

“I’m not gonna stay.
Not gonna listen.
Just step back,
Let me do my thing,” I say, smirking.

“Please don’t go, girl.
Why don’t you stay?
Please don’t leave me,
I’ll change my ways.

“I know we had a problem, girl.
But I won’t live another day,
If you aren’t with me
Every step of the way.

“I know we had it rough,
Fightin’ and arguin’
But can’t we please look the other way.
‘Cause I’ll try my best to be loyal
Every single day,” Luke sings, smirking.

“But I gotta get goin’
My life isn’t meant for here.
I gotta get livin’
And can’t let you hold me back.

“I’m gonna party,
I’m gonna forget.
Just let me go,
Don’t hold me back,” I sing, smirking.

“Just stay here with me,
I won’t hold you back.
We’ll both make our ways,
Up to the top.

“But you gotta stay, girl.
You’re my entire life.
I’ve been waiting forever for yah,
So just don’t leave me,” Luke sings, smirking.

“We’ll make our way
Up to the top.
Together forever.
That doesn’t sound too bad,” we sing together, smiling at each other.

“Darn, now I can’t even tell.”, Anna says, snapping her fingers together.

“They were both really good.”, Beth says, frowning.

“I thought Luke was a little pitchy,” Keith says, smirking.

“Keith, you wouldn’t know talent if you had some.”, Anna says, smirking.

“I think Kristina beat me with talent.”, Luke says sheepishly.

“No, you were better.”, I say sheepishly, feeling my cheeks burn up.

“Hey, Kristina, mind giving us one final performance?”, their parents ask, smiling at me.

“Umm, sure?”, I say, standing up. I plug in my iPod Touch, playing “I Got You” by Leona Lewis.

A place to crash, I got you
No need to ask, I got you
Just get on the phone, I got you
Come and pick you up if I have to

What’s weird about it is we’re right at the end
I’m mad about it, just figured it out in my head
I’m proud to say I got you

Go ahead and say goodbye, I’ll be alright
Go ahead and make me cry, I’ll be alright
And when you need a place to run to
For better, for worse I got you, I got you

Ain’t falling apart or bitter
Let’s be bigger than that and remember
The cooling outdoor when you’re all alone
Won’t survive it, no drama, no need for a show
Just wanna say I got you

“Go ahead and say goodbye, I’ll be alright
Go ahead and make me cry, I’ll be alright
And when you need a place to run to
For better, for worse I got you

“Go ahead and say goodbye, I’ll be alright
Go ahead and make me cry, I’ll be alright
And when you need a place to run to
For better, for worse, I got you

’Cause this is love and life
And nothing we can both control
And if it don’t feel right
You’re not losing me by letting me know

Go ahead and say goodbye, I’ll be alright
Go ahead and make me cry, I’ll be alright
And when you need a place to run to
For better, for worse I got you

Go ahead and say goodbye, I’ll be alright
Go ahead and make me cry, I’ll be alright
And when you need a place to run to
For better, for worse I got you

A place to crash, I got you
No need to ask, I got you
,” I sing, smiling.

“Beautiful!”, Anna says, smiling.

“Yeah, yeah. Don’t expect me to sing again.”

“What?! Kristina! You’re getting out of your shell this year!”, Beth says firmly.

“Nope. I’m gonna stay the same as I’ve always been. The lawyer’s and doctor’s daughter. The shy girl who sits in the back of the room. Don’t try to change me, Bethany.”

“You’re so stubborn.”

“You better believe it!”

“You’re such a geek.”

“Ain’t that obvious?”

“I give up!”

“I win again!”

“You’ve never won!”

“Yes, I have!”

“No you haven’t!”

“Bethany Fay Redmon! Aren’t you supposed to be preparing for cheerleading?”

“Oh, thanks for reminding me!”

“No problem,” I mutter, smirking.

“Why don’t you sing?”, Luke asks, raising an eyebrow.

“I’m known as the shy girl, who doesn’t talk. And I like it that way.”, I say, running up the steps quickly, before anyone else can ask another question. I climb out my window, straight to the roof, my sweet little paradise. I just sit down right there, watching the sunset. But that little bliss was quickly ended, as the Vane’s came out of my house and toward their limousine.

“Hey, Luke! I found your girlfriend!”, Keith yells, smirking up at me.

“Hey, perv, shut up!”, I yell, smirking.

“How’s about I take you out to dinner!”

“In your dreams, you frickin’ pervert!”

“Maybe this is my dream!”

“No!”

“You’re probably the smartest girl in the world, Kristina!”, Luke yells at me. I smirk, waving as they all enter their limousine. I quickly stare up at the clouds, watching as they turn a fiery color, making me smile.
