Too Good to Be True

“Leave? But we just got here..?”

“No, I mean leave town, Claire.”

“Are you serious?”

“Of course I’m serious. If they beat you one more time I’m not sure you can take it.” Honestly, I wasn’t sure if I could take it. After a few seconds of staring at each other, the waitress comes over and we order a plate of cheese fries—the same dish we’ve gotten since we were little. I guess you can say it’s our thing.

“Lizzy…I can’t just leave. It’s not that simple.” She avoids my eyes. I feel a sudden urge to reach out to her. I grab her hands.

“It is if we make it simple. I’m going to get you out of there.” I’ve always wondered what it would be like if we didn’t have to deal with any of it. My whore of a mother and her abusive family, I mean. What it would be like if it was just me and her…it seems too good to be true.

But I’m going to make it true. All I’ve ever wanted was to be with her.
