Seeing Double

Soap Opera

Invisible; impossible or nearly impossible to see—this was the definition. I never wanted to be invisible more than I did now. I wanted to disappear. I wanted to be nearly impossible to see. I wished that I could wrinkle my nose or clap my hands, and disappear—or teleport somewhere else.

But that didn’t happen.

Instead, I was completely visible. I didn’t vanish, I didn’t disappear—I didn’t even wrinkle my nose to try.

I was completely visible as I stood in the room, the center of an awkward situation—at least it was awkward to me. The tension in the room could have been cut with a knife...no—a machete. The sharp knife used in the Amazon to slice through the thicket. This was the only knife capable of removing the amount of tension in the air between Heaven and Nevaeh.

Heaven’s eyes were narrowed in a fierce glare. Her fist were clenched, a scowl permanently placed itself on her lips. The fire in her eyes made me cringe. The anger on her face gave me affright. I gulped out of pure intimidation. I had never seen Heaven look as…terrorizing as she did now.

Neveah’s expression wasn’t any better. She was just as frightening as her sister.

Her eyes were narrowed in a menacing glare. Her eyes darkened from the amount of hatred in them. Her left hand—clenched tightly in a fist; her right hand, keeping the basketball under her arm. Her nostrils flared, her chest heaving up and down, as she glared at her sister.

“What do you mean, why?” hatred dripped from every word that Heaven spoke.

Nevaeh shifted her weight onto her right leg. She placed her hand on her hip as she continued to glare at her sister. “I mean, why. As in why do you need his number?”

“That’s fairly obvious, don’t you think?”

“Sería obvio si no me preguntan para obtener el número de Austin para usted.”

Heaven tensed up at Neaveh’s words. Her eyes straightened as the hatred left them. The anger on her face replaced itself with shock…temporarily. Her face soon returned to its angry state. Her fist clenched as she ran her tongue across her teeth.

“?Y qué?” she questioned. “Puedo obtener tanto de sus números en que quiero. Es mi elección, no la suya.”

Neveah became angrier, her eyes darkening. They appeared almost black. My eyes winded at the sight. My blood ran cold. She couldn’t look more fearsome if she tried.

“Yo no voy a estar aquí y verte jugar con ellos como si fueran juguetes.”

“¿Qué te hace pensar que los estoy jugando?”

“!Porque siempre lo haces!” Nevaeh yelled. The basketball dropped from her arm, bouncing as it hit the wood floor.

“!No es mi culpa que los chicos realmente me gusta!”

“Normalmente excusa puta.” A smirk formed on Nevaeh’s lips.

My eyes winded in shock as I stared at her. I wasn’t fluent in Spanish. I could only speak the basics, the things that they taught in intro Spanish. Despite this, one of the few words that I knew—was puta. I had no idea what the girls were arguing about, but I knew that it couldn’t be good if they were using that word.

Heaven only confirmed my thoughts when she screamed, “Vete a la mierda puta!”

They both started screaming curses at each other at the top of their lungs. I felt as if I was in a Spanish soap opera. The two were screaming and flaring their arms. All I could do was watch. I couldn’t break up a fight that I knew nothing about. I had no idea what I could do to calm them down.

Their mom ran down that stairs, hearing the chaos form upstairs. “Heaven, Nevaeh, detener esto ahora!” The two immediately stopped yelling at each other. They were still angry, but they did what their mother told them to do—I’m assuming.

“Ustedes dos saben mejor que se comporte así. !Especialmente frente de la empresa! No sé qué diablos te pasa, pero va a detener ahora mismo! Cualquiera de disculpas o ir a sus habitaciones.”

The two continued to glare at each other in silence. They looked as if they were trying their hardest to not hit the other person. The tension in the room had become thicker than before. I hadn’t thought that was possible.

Their mom glanced between the two, observing them. “Ahora!!”

Nevaeh rolled her eyes before walking up the stairs. Heaven scoffed, mumbling something under her breath. Her mother shot her a scolding look, immediately causing Heaven to straighten up. She turned on her heel, before following her sister’s example and walking up the stairs.

Their mom shook her head as she watched her daughter. She closed her eyes and rubbed her temples, stress present on her face. She opened her eyes, her gaze falling on me. Another sigh escaped her lips as her arms dropped to her side.

“I’m sorry that you had to see that Justin. You should probably get home before your mother starts worrying about you,”
