Chapter 12

Moving Night…

“Twyla wake up.” Gates put his hand on her shoulder and shook her gently. “Come on, all your stuff has been moved already, its time to wake up.”

She turned onto her back and groaned. “No, I got no sleep at all today. What was with all the noise?”

“That was Shadows installing the bars.”

Twyla bolted up right in the bed. “What fucking bars? I am not going over there to be anyone’s prisoner.”

“Relax. Shadows put bars along the walls in the hallway so you have something to hold onto when you walk.”

“Gee how considerate.”

Gates sat down on the bed and patted her hand. “Come on give the guy a break, he really went out of his way to make the guest house accommodating for your needs. You should see your bathtub.”

Twyla wasn’t giving in, but she was curious. “A bathtub is a bathtub Bri.”

“Oh not according to Shadows. Out of all the renovating we did in the guesthouse, he said the bathtub was the most important thing. Insisted that had to be perfect. It’s a Jacuzzi tub with a bubble maker. Shadows said something about you and Mr. Bubbles. The thing is friggen huge Twy. You could practically swim in it if you want to. Even has a neck rest and a water proof ipod dock.”

Twyla sat there remembering the night she and Shadows talked about her and her nightly bath ritual. The same night he left her stranded at the bathroom door.

“Yeah well, nobody does anything for anyone without expecting something in return. So what do I have to do?”

“Why can’t you just accept the fact that he’s only trying to help you?”

“Because, I just can’t ok?”

“Fine. Let’s get going then.”

“I need to get dressed.”

Gates laughed. “We moved all your clothes.”

“Really? You couldn’t wait until I got up?”

“Nope,” He put his arm around her shoulder. “Come on, the sooner you get it over with, the better.”

“Fine!” Twyla huffed and got up off the bed.

Gates walked her to the guesthouse and lucky for her, Shadows wasn’t anywhere to be found. He showed her the changes they all made for her benefit. Changes that included the bar railings along the walls and an intercom system that was also installed through out the house incase she was in trouble.

“Your room is just upstairs, come on.”

Twyla held onto the railing and walked up the stairs with Gates at her side. They counted three doors. The first belonged to Shadows, the second was a guest bathroom and the third was Twyla’s.

“Where’s bug’s room?”

“Oh upstairs. There’s a door at the end of the hall that goes up to the attic. She practically begged Shadows to have her room up there. She calls it her princess tower. It’s cute how she really believes she’s a princess. Even swears that the Prince is going to come and rescue her one day.”

“Yeah, that’s my sister. Always the dreamer.”

Oh you don’t know the half of it, girly.

Gates opened the door to Twyla’s room and led her inside. Almost immediately, Lark grabbed her hand. “Hi Twyla.”

“Hey you!” Twyla knelt down to her sister’s level. “What are you doing in here?”

Lark put her hands on her sister’s face and turned her head so she could see her lips. “I’m over here, what did you say?”

“Sorry, I asked what you were doing in here.”

“I’m waiting for you so I can show you your new room! You’re gonna love it! My daddy made everything pink and black just like your favorite colors!”

“I bet it’s an awesome room.” Twyla wouldn’t dare throw her anger at Shadows towards her sister, so she humored her instead. To hear Lark call him daddy burned her up inside.

“We can have sleepover’s now!”

Gates tapped Lark on her shoulder and she looked up at him. “Can I come to one of your sleepovers?”

“No,” Lark giggled. “There are no boys allowed at sleepovers!”

“Oh darn!” He snapped his fingers just for the effect and lark giggled again. “How about you go down stairs and sneak some cookies before your daddy gets back and I’ll get your sister settled.”

“Ok, but you wont tell I had cookies?”

“Nope!”

“Cross your heart first” Lark put her hands on her hips and stood there looking up at Gates while he crossed his heart in a promise for her. “Thank you.” She smiled and ran out of the room.

Twyla stood back up and waited for Gates to show her around. “Come on, it’s not so bad.” He took her hand and walked her over to the window. “Window bench, so you can get some fresh air.”

“And over here, your closets.” He opened the doors for her and showed her how she could find everything she would need. Gates continued to show her around her room and ended the tour at her bed. A full king sized four-poster bed.

“Why isn’t Shadows here to rub this in my face.”

Gates took a seat down on the bed beside her. “To be perfectly honest, he’s real pissed off at you. He took it really personal when you said you didn’t trust him.”

“Oh please,” Twyla sighed.

“I’m serious. You insulted him in a really big way and he just decided he’d rather not be around while you were settling in. He probably wont show up until much later.”

“Well good. I’m glad he’s not here anyway.” Liar. “So, what are your plans for the rest of the night?”

Gates smiled. “Probably gonna go home and drown my sorrows in beer.”

“Tomorrow’s the night?”

“Yeah,” he sighed.

“Well, maybe it won’t be so bad.”

Is that supposed to comfort him?

“I don’t even think I can be there to say goodbye.”

“Dude, you owe her that much.”

“Technically, I never told her how I felt so I don’t really owe her anything.”

Twyla smacked him in the back of his head. “Hey!”

“Don’t be a dick, that title is reserved for Shadows.”

Gates laughed and got up off the bed. “One day, Twy, you’re so gonna see Shadows in a whole different light and I’ll be the one having this conversation with you.”

Now it was Twyla who was laughing. “Funny. I don’t think I’ll be seeing Shadows in any light any time soon.”

“You know what I meant.”

“Yeah, what ever. Go drink yourself stupid.”

“I will!”

Gates left her alone and Twyla got up off the bed and went to sit on the window bench. She’d been sitting there for what seemed like hours just thinking about how her life had turned out.

“Dinner’s downstairs, it’s pizza.”

Twyla turned her head towards Shadows voice. He was standing in the doorway waiting for a response. “I’m not hungry.”

Shadows shook his head. No more Mr. Nice Guy. “Fuck you, Twyla.” That was all he said before walking away from her doorway.
