The Road Trip
Chapter 16
Chapter 16
“You both are too cwazy!” I exclaimed at Levi and Corbin. Yes, we are still together at the rest stop, even 30 minutes AFTER I introduced them. We are waaay too friendly. If we continue to meet new people we’ll never finish this road trip. Sure it’s been fun hanging out with Corbin, but we’ll have to leave him at some point. Hmmm… NORMALLY I would be the one to be holding us up and Levi would be on me that we were off schedule and had to wrap it up, and yet right now she doesn’t seem to care. I wonder what’s so special about this situation…
“Nuh uh! We are completely correct in our ideas about cheese puffs as a side dish!” They both told me together. Of course they would be on the same side, I wish that Eric was here. He would agree with me on my point.
“Not if you’re saying that cheese puffs are the best side dish for any meal! Honestly do you guys have any cheese puff logic in your body? Cheese puffs, while delicious and mouth-watering at any time for a SNACK, are only good side dishes for lunch, only dinner if you’re having friends over in a party-like fashion, but NEVER breakfast… unless you’re really lazy. Whereas French fries are the best for dinner AND lunch, not breakfast at all usually unless it’s in its other hash brown form. Which therefore makes it the BEST overall side dish and/or snack. So there, hmpf.” I told them going a little slow in some parts so they would catch all of it. We got started on this discussion about 5 minutes ago, after first talking about our “candy obsession”, just like Levi did with Eric, for about 5 minutes, second talking about our favorite candies—we decided against giving Corbin a nickname already since we only just met him, no matter how cool he may seem— for around 10 minutes, and third, basically me watching Levi and Corbin flirt for 10 WHOLE MINUTES with a few interjections—not very many. Then we started the conversation that we are having now.
“Hmm you make a good point…” Corbin spoke, while Levi still looked thoughtful. I mentally smirked— I do that a lot have you noticed?— and thought, Don’t try to argue with me when I know I’m right… you’ll learn the error of your ways. Mwah ha ha haaaa. I was a bit startled after thinking that. Apparently you could even laugh evilly in your mind. Cool.
“And…?” I prodded, waiting for them to say the magic words ‘you were right and we were wrong’. One of my favorite phrases. Which is COMPLETELY normal, who doesn’t enjoy being right?
“And I guess we were sort of incorrect…and… you weren’t…” Levi said cautiously, and looking a little sly knowing that she didn’t say exactly what I wanted her to. Grr… she knows me too well… but at least she admitted that she was wrong. Therefore I commenced my happy dancing celebration.
“YAY! I was ri-ight, I was ri-ight, ooo-it, ooo-it. Ooo-it, ooo-it!” I did that while doing a few random moves for around 30 seconds, then stopped and composed myself except for the big smile on my face.
Levi and Corbin were giggling and chuckling at me. I stuck my tongue out at them.
“You’re just jealous that you guys weren’t right, and IIII was, hmpf.” Hmm I seem to have forgotten to put my tongue back in my mouth while saying that…Whoopsies! That whole thing just made them laugh harder and feel a bit faint in the legs. What they probably heard was ‘Ore dust dedus dat thu dithes theren’t wight, an IIII wasth, thmpf.’ Yeah… I would laugh at that too. Therefore I stuck my tongue back in my mouth, not without giving them one last wiggle, and repeated my words normally. Sadly by this time they couldn’t even reply, they were rolling on the ground. Yeah, yeah, yeah, laugh it up. But I was right. Then I walked away from their laughter fest.
While walking away, I realized that I didn’t have a destination. But then a picture of a puppy popped into my head, and I went to go look for that cut little Labrador retriever pup.

Finally… I had found the puppy after about 10 minutes of searching. He was trembling a little, probably a little scared. Which is understandable since he seemed to be hiding in a bush and was all alone.
“Poor little guy…” I said sympathetically. I held my hand out in front of me and slowly but surely the little guy pawed forward to sniff it. The little guy couldn’t be more than a year old. After he had thoroughly sniffed my hand, he looked up at me with his brown eyes, sniffed once, looked back at my hand, and gave it a small lick with his tiny tongue.
And I melted right there.
I fell right back in love with that little puppy.
“Awww, you are too sweet. How could anyone get rid of you?” I cooed. I began stoking his head and back lovingly and carefully, so I wouldn’t scare him away. But after a few minutes of petting, I didn’t have to worry about scaring him away, I could already tell that he loved me back. Almost like we were meant to find each other. I thought, still petting him. Well, I can’t let this opportunity get away. What if he’s my… soul pet? Does that exist? It certainly feels like it.
“Soo little pup, do you want to stay with me? I think we could be good friends.” I told him, treating him like a person, just because I don’t really like ownership. Hmm… I sure do hope Levi won’t mind.
I imagined her looking back and forth between me and the puppy at a rapid-fire speed, slowly processing it and as she did slow the whipping of her head, and then finally give a small smile that grew bigger and nearly crush my new friend in a huge hug. Meh, Levi will be fine. But.. unnamed puppy here… maybe it would be better for his health if I don’t tell Levi yet. Anyways, first thing is first, puppy here needs a name.
“What to name you... what to name you…” I pondered aloud to U.P.—unnamed puppy, I’m getting into the habit of nicknaming things before actually knowing their name… Oh well.
“Any ideas?” I asked him. He just looked up at me and cocked his head almost as though he was trying to think too.
“Max? Elliot? Adam? Patch? Tiger? Lightning?” I said to him as they popped in my head. U.P. didn’t seem to like any of them. Name…name… what’s in the name?
Then I had an epiphany.
“Leonardo? Leo?” I said to him. He perked up immediately and almost looked like he was smiling at his new name.
“Leonardo Allen. Leo Allen. I like it.” I told him happily. Then I began to pet him again saying ‘Good Leo’ a few times. Leonardo licked me a few times with his warm little tongue and snuggled into my lap, being as I was now sitting ‘criss, cross, applesauce’.
For the 2nd time in my life, I said three little words to someone not in my family and by my own choice. I actually meant it. And I said them to Leo with feeling.
“I love you.”
