The Same Mistake

Thursday, October 26 - Evening (4).

Ellie crossed the Great Hall and took the unoccupied seat next to Ginny. Ellie’s cheeks were still bright from her argument with Malfoy, causing her to look highly flustered. “Hi.”

“Where have you been?” Ginny asked, her gaze drifting over Ellie as she perused the many faces in Great Hall.

Ellie’s seemingly constant irritation with Malfoy crept back over her. “I was in the Owlery, sending a letter.”

“Oh?” Ginny replied still not focusing on Ellie.

“Uhm, who are we looking for?” Ellie shifted in her seat to peer over the heads blocking her view of the entrance to the Great Hall.

Ginny’s eyes flashed to Ellie’s. “Harry asked me about you. He wanted to know who the new girl I’m hanging out with is.”

“I saw him in the Owlery.”

“He asked me about Malfoy,” Ellie explained carefully.

She wanted to assure her friend that she harbored no secret affections for the boy Ginny had loved since she was eleven. And Ellie was equally as certain that Harry was not at all interested in her. On more than one occasion, Ellie had seen Harry watching Ginny from across the common room. She firmly believed that it was only a matter of time before Harry worked up the nerve to ask Ginny out.

The doors to the Great Hall opened with a reverberating groan. The Hogwarts students shifted their attention to the newcomer. Draco Malfoy strolled to the Slytherin table, his gaze colliding with Ellie’s for the briefest of moments. Then he sat down, draping his arm across Pansy Parkinson’s shoulders.

Ellie flicked her blonde hair off her shoulder in agitation. What ever game Malfoy thought he was playing, Ellie had no interest in partaking. But their swift interaction did not go unnoticed by the scrutinizing gaze of Ginny.

“What in the world was that about?” she asked bewildered.

“Nothing,” Ellie replied finally digging into the splendid food laid out before her.

“Uh, no. That definitely was something,” Ginny pressed.

“Actually, it most certainly was not. Will you please pass me the ham?” Ellie asked loftily.

Giggling, Ginny handed her friend the platter of honey roasted ham. “When this whole ‘nothing’ blows up, I’ll be there to say ‘I told you so.’”

“How kind,” replied Ellie curtly.
