The Play
Dear Auden,
I remember when we were six and our class was doing a play. I wanted to be the princess, but Jackie Cane said that I wasn't pretty enough. I ran to the girls toilets. You followed me in even though you were a boy. All you said was,
"She's wrong"
"She is?" I'd asked, sniffing.
"Emmy, you are the prettiest girl i know" You had said confidently.
When we walked back, we planned out that you would be the prince and I, the princess. But then Mrs Buhg said that Jackie and Patrick already had the roles.
We were so disappointed. But of course you made it better with words that still haunt my dreams.
"Don't worry, you will always be my princess and I'll always be your prince".
You always did know what to say.
