'Safe' Is Not A Word In My Vocabulary

Chapter 6

I turned around to see Quil jogging towards me with a smile on his face. All my earlier worries about dying and gangs were all washed from my mind as I returned the smile.

“Hey Quil.” I replied and he stopped in front of me. “What are you doing here?” I asked as he rolled his eyes. “Isn’t it the other way around? I do live here.” He countered and I smirked. “Really I had no idea.” My voice dripped with sarcasm and he stuck his tongue at me. I grinned.

“I was actually on my way to Emily’s, wanna come?” he asked and I laughed. “If I say no I’ll have the feeling you’ll just carry me there anyway.” He laughed and nodded. I rolled my eyes and he threw an arm around my shoulder as we walked towards the parking lot.

“You drive here?” he asked and I nodded. “Good, you can give me a lift, I walked.” I nodded and took his arm from around my shoulder so I could fish my keys from my pocket. I clicked the button and my car flashed it’s lights. Quil stared at it in awe, a smile breaking over his face.

I shoved the keys into his hands. “What’s this?” he asked and I rolled my eyes. “They’re keys genius; you use them to start to car.” He snorted “Funny, but why did you give them to me?” I shrugged innocently and smiled “I don’t remember the way to get there, and you look like you want to drive.” He grinned brightly as I got in the passenger seat.

“How fast can-” he started but I cut him off “I’ve got it up to about 140 mph. It was great.” He gave me and odd look. “And why on earth were you going that fast?” he asked me and bit my lip.

“My friends like to race.” I said honestly and he raised an eyebrow, but instead of asking anymore questions he just shrugged his shoulders and turned the car on.

I smiled to myself.

We pulled up outside Emily’s place and I had to smile at the sight of Claire peeking out the window. Quil opened his door and I opened mine at the same time, we jogged to get towards the house because it started pouring Quil slipped twice so we were both laughing when he opened the door. It seemed kind of rude but I guessed this was customary.

Emily looked up from cooking what looked like a lot of spaghetti and meatballs.

Yup. Definitely werewolves living here.

“Hey Emily” I grinned while Claire rushed to me and Quil. Emily smiled “Hello Centhua how are you?” she asked pleasantly. I smiled and shrugged “Good, and you?” I asked she nodded.

“I’m good.” She said but I couldn’t help notice how her eyes flashed out the window with worry when she said that. Weird….

I felt Claire tugging on my leg so I leaned down and lifted her up. I rested her on my hip while Quil snuck over to where Emily was cooking. She whacked him with the spoon when he tried took a piece of garlic bread and Claire giggled. He shoved in his mouth and grinned. “Ew!” Claire squealed while I laughed. “Do you always do that with your food?” I asked him and he thought for a minute. “Nope, only when the food is really good.” He went for another piece and Emily rolled her eyes at him. She turned to me.

“Does he do that with his food a lot?” she asked me and I smirked. “Well, I got to see half of his chewed brownie yesterday so I’m not sure.” Claire giggled again and I put her down so she could run to Quil. She opened her mouth and he gave her a bite of his bread. She chewed it and stuck her tongue out. Emily and I groaned.

Quil laughed.

I walked over and collapsed on the couch. Quil came and sat down next to me while Claire sat on his lap. She immediately started talking up a storm while Quil watched some football game and interrupted occasionally. Claire had worn herself out and was lying across mine and Quil’s laps.

A flash went off and we both looked up to see Emily smiling with a camera. “Awe” she cooed looking at it. I turned red along with Quil.

Yeah, I bet we just looked like a happy family. Claire grinned and I suddenly heard the sound of tires on the drive way, along with several male voices. Some of which, were clearly talking about my car. Quil grimaced and Emily went back to cooking. He pulled Claire into his own lap just as several heavy steps climbed up the porch. The door was thrown opened and a tall dark skinned guy I didn’t recognize shook his hair like a dog. Quil laughed. “You’re such a dog Paul” he muttered and ‘Paul’ grinned, then his eyes landed on me and his grin turned into a smirk. Ah he was one of those guys.

Jacob came in next with another guy I didn’t know and Sam. Jacob flashed me a smile. And I grinned in return. Then to keep from looking like a creeper and staring at him I turned my attention back to the game. Paul sunk into the couch on my other side and I closed my eyes. I really didn’t have the patience for this today. I opened them to see some of the guys looking at me curiously. I raised an eyebrow. “What?” I asked and they looked away nervously. “Nice car” Paul commented and I sighed, “Thanks it was a gift” I said in a bored voice.

K-9 helped me build that car last year. The car wasn’t really the gift, the parts were. He said it was time I learned. I’ve built myself multiple cars after that and found that I really do like it. A car shop in Port Angeles hired me as a mechanic and I have more money saved then I know what to do with.

Edward also gives me a sports car every time we have a bad fight, so I’m in the habit of changing my vehicle to match my outfits... I got up and walked over to Emily while the guys watched the game and chatted about random things. The guy I didn’t know was named Embry. I wasn’t paying much attention to anyone but Sam. He was looking at me with his lips pressed in a hard line and I had the same expression on, ignoring Paul's attempts to be discreet while he flirted with me, and Jacob's obvious jealousy.

“Yo where’s Jared?” Quil asked and Jacob shrugged, “Said he was getting Kim and he’d meet us here later.”

Jacob claimed my attention for the rest of the afternoon and I found he was easy to talk with. Everyone else was drifting into their own conversations, but I knew some of them were still listening to me and Jacob’s.

I wondered briefly what Edward would think if he knew I was here right now, would he approve more of the gang, or the wolves.

About an hour or so later a heard another set of tires pull into the driveway. I closed my eyes and cocked my head to the side.

Fun fact about me, I can tell just about any car model by the sound of the engine. And no, it’s not a wolf thing, it’s a talent. I could tell it was a truck, Ford F-Series, 2007.
Not bad.

Paul grunted, “Bout time” he muttered and the guys rolled their eyes. Not so patient is he?

Another pair of heavy werewolf steps sounded up the porch along with lighter more quiet steps that obviously belonged to a female.

Two people walked in, one another tall buffed out werewolf dude Im assuming to be Jared, and a small friendly looking girl who I assume is Kim.

She was pretty, with wide cheek bones, double curved lips and long black hair. Her brown eyes were a little small to balance the rest of her face, but she was pretty. Her hair was braided down to her mid back, thin and wispy.

Yes, a very friendly face.

She smiled tentatively at me and I smiled back easily. Neither Kim nor Jared seemed surprised to see me there, so I wondered if I’d been a topic of discussion before. “Hi I’m Kim” the girl said sitting next to me, (I am such a genius with names.)

Paul had moved over earlier, thanks to Jacob’s death glares. “I’m Centhua.” I replied.

The guys roared in triumph when one of the teams scored a touchdown and I grinned and rolled my eyes at the same time Kim did. Claire was in the kitchen pestering Emily...

Kim and I talked for a while and we became friends. The guys went on watching the game and I could tell they weren’t as interested as they’d been when I was talking with Jacob.

We made plans to go to the mall Friday.

Yeah, I know shocking right.

I tried not to look too concerned when she mentioned it. K-9 and the guys always ask me to race on Fridays, illegally but whatever, it was fun and usually went on from 1 am till about sunrise. Edward has no idea, Im very careful with my thoughts around him.

While the guys started watching another game, baseball this time, I thought about how weird my life has been.

It’s like fate has made me do all the things I never said I’d do in the span of a few days. I go from being this total heartless survival chick to super nanny.

Check.

Instead of avoiding my imprint, and love all together, I practically go looking for it.

Check.

Instead of doing something illegal on a Friday night, Im going shopping with a human.

Check.

It’s making me feel like Im living a double life.

Normal (almost) teen girl by day, survival obsessed werewolf by night.

Suddenly, when I thought of that I happened to look over at Kim. I noticed for the first time, around her neck was a snake necklace pendant. It was made of gold, with diamonds studded along the surface.
