Thinkin' Bout Something

002

I waited for four weeks before I finally got a phone call, I wasn’t the type of girl to call first. It was Zac, he was having a lot of fun, the usual chit chat banter. The smart ass jokes.. My Zac. We didn’t really talk to much. Everyone was fine and that’s all that mattered. I heard Taylor’s voice in the background and I couldn’t help but smile.
“How’s Tay?” I asked.

“He’s doing okay..” He coughed a little.

“You getting sick?”

“No Mom, I’m fine.” He snickered.

“You miss me yet?”

“Not at all.”

“Fuck you Zac.”

We fought like children. Very foul mouthed children, when parents weren’t in ear shot. Within a few minutes the conversation ended. I hung up the phone and sighed. I hated making all the moves, if Taylor wanted to talk to me he would have. He was still trying to make sense of things, at least that’s what the email said. And, I respected that.

I made my way down the stairs to the kitchen, I poured myself a glass of Lemon Iced Tea and leaned against the counter. I flipped through the articles on Jessica Simpson, Nsync, Ricky Martin, Britney Spears, Dream, and Usher. I drank another sip of my tea as I read over blurbs about the Back Street Boys, Samantha Mumba, Mandy Moore, and LFO.

I looked out the window to the house next door, the music was more than loud enough, shaking my walls and windows. I pulled my hair up and went over to the couch. Flipping the tv on, I moved my legs onto the couch and cuddled up next to Ziggy, my pipsqueak puppy. “What’s going on over there?” I laughed as I tickled his tummy. He got up and sat at the window.

I decided on watching Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp in it. About a quarter way through, Ziggy started barking, there was a loud bang then my front door flew open. “Hey, want some company?” Ellis yelled as she threw me a package of Sour Patch Kids.

“No.” I said folding my arms over my chest turning my head. Ellis put on her fowny face. “I’m joking sit down.” I tossed her and Micha two blankets and resumed the movie.

“Johnny Depp is hot.” Micha said.

“You said that already.” I added

“I mean it.”

“Obviously.” I cuddled up a bit closer to the pillow beside me.

I woke up at nine am. Ellis and Micha still asleep. I got on my computer and pulled up my email. Two new messages. One from Zac and one from Taylor. I opened Zac’s first.

Avey!
Something happened, you need to know.. Call me at the hotel.

The number was attached, but I waited.. If it was life or death he would have called me not emailed. The next, from Taylor.

Avalynne,

I didn’t hear from you.. I thought you weren’t interested, but nonetheless, I did something I need you to know about. I found a girl in the audience, I brought her backstage… like the managers say to do… and Ave, I slept with her. I wasn’t in my right mind. I don’t know what happened, and I am so sorry. If you have this email still open, I never meant to hurt you.

Taylor…

I shut the email and closed the browser. I didn’t call Zac, I knew what he had to say. There are circumstances where one thing leads to another and I can fully understand that. We weren’t dating or anything, so he was entitled. He was also right in the fact that he didn’t hear from me. I might have waited to long.. So therefore, his altercation was justifiable. I couldn’t be mad. I shouldn’t be mad.

I wiped a few random tears away and sucked in a deep breath, letting it out just as quickly. It was okay. It only happened once, and when he is home, I can talk to him about it. I second guessed writing him, deciding once and for all, this topic will have to wait until we were face to face.

A few days later I got another call form Zac. “Ave he’s depressed.”

“I can’t talk to him Zac, I can’t do it until him and I are face to face.” I looked at the calendar on the wall. There was still a week and a half left. “Let him take it all in. I plan to make it right when he gets back here.”

“We’re swamped until we’re home again Avey, I won’t be able to talk to you again until the show in Tulsa.” He sounded concerned.

“Then I’ll talk to you in person then too.” I blew a kiss over the phone which drew a laugh from him. “Bye Zah-shar-ie”

“Bye Ave.”

Less than two weeks and the boys were back in town. I was in my room with Ellis and Micha getting ready for the show tonight. Mrs. Hanson, Diana, dropped off the backstage passes this morning. I let my hair down and did my eye make up. I put on my Hanson t-shirt and my jeans.

Ellis was standing in the mirror watching me. “Do I look all right?”

“You look great!” I said.

“How do I look?” Micha asked.

“Wonderful. You both look spectacular.” I smirked. “You need to open your mouths tonight, or I’m opening mine.” I teased.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Ellis said.

“I know how you feel about Ike.” I laughed winking.

“Yeah, everyone does but you and him.” Micha shrugged.

“Shut up Micha, we know you like Zac!” Ellis pointed her finger

“Both of you stop.” I checked myself over in the mirror one more time. “Do I look all right?” I asked.

“Yes.” Unison, almost never in unison, but on rare scare occasions, in unison.

“Can we go now?” Micha practically begged.

“Yes, lets go.” I grabbed my bag and the backstage passes before climbing into my 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix.

It was warm for March in Tulsa. I got out of the car followed by the other two. I flashed our passes, I had all three to make sure they didn’t lose theirs, and went into the building skipping the long line of girls already in line. “Avalynne! Ellis! Micha!” Walker yelled.

“Hello Mr. Hanson.” I smiled and walked up to him letting him pull the three of us into a hug.

“The boys are around her somewhere.” He pointed down the hallway.

I nodded and headed down the corridor. “Ave!” Ike yelled before pulling me into a hug. I returned the gesture and smiled as he looked at the others. “Hey Micha.” He nodded. “Hey Ellis..” He bit his lip and blushed slightly.

“Hey yourself.” Ellis flirted back. I couldn’t help but smile. She fought it for so long with us, but she finally accepted fate.

I left them alone as I found Zac. “Hey mister!” I yelled as I engulfed him in a hug.

“Let’s walk this way.” He said.

“Why?” I looked passed him. There it was, something I wasn’t ready for…

I sucked in another breath and choked a little. Taylor had his arms around a thin tall girl. He kissed her quickly on the cheek and smiled at her. “I-I- ugh.” I was to frustrated and disappointed in my lack of judgment for not messaging him. I could have just walked out…

“Ave… you didn’t say anything to him.” Zac started.

“What’s going on?” Ellis started before assessing the situation for herself.

“We were going to tell you.” Ike said.

“It’s okay.” I fought back the burning feeling in my throat.. “I’m okay.”
