The room is large
and cold
and full of people
startling
and irking me
and I just want to leave;
but Nurse Betty says it’s important.

My mother sits at a table
with Ms.RoseandKelly
and a lawyer.
I’m sitting in a seat near them
huddled and twitching;
cowering under the invasive faces.
“I’d like to call Elena Rose to the stand please.”
The LawyerMan’s voice is strong and asserting.
“Ms. Rose, could you please tell us the mental state Ms. Johnson is in right now?”
“Ms. Johnson is struggling with many mental diseases at the moment.”
“She shows symptoms of
schizophrenia
antisocial personality disorder
posttraumatic stress disorder
and recently signs of dissociative identity disorder.”
“And how does Ivan Peterson play a role in all of this?”
“We believe that Ivan Peterson is the cause of her PTSD”
“Thank you Ms. Rose.”
Hours pass
time goes slowly at first
but then starts going quickly
and quicker
and quicker

“I’d like to call Aurora Johnson to the stand”
and suddenly time stops.
On trembling feet I make my way
to the witness stand
(the victim’s stand)
“Ms. Johnson, could you please describe to me your relationship with Ivan Peterson?”
“Wh-wh-who’s Ivan Peterson?”

Mr. LawyerMan points to Daddy
(who sits at a table that I did not notice before)
and I find myself screaming.
