Change my point of view / Derek Morgan one shot

I nervously looked around me. I was all alone in the elevator, leading me to the 7th floor of Federal building. It was a first time in a very long time, when I really wanted to run away. I’ve never been afraid of new things, but today was the day, when I was supposed to meet my new team. I was moved to the BAU to become their new profiler. Don’t get me wrong- I do like my job, but meeting people who’ve known each other for a while now and are really close is always difficult. I didn’t want them to reject me in the first place and it sort of happened to me a few times. No one said it to my face, but I could feel it. I’m highly intelligent, but also have quite good people skills, so it’s easy for me to tell, if someone’s lying.

The elevator stopped and I checked on which floor I was. *Three more to go*- I thought to myself. The door opened and a tall, black haired woman came in.

“Which floor?” she asked.

“Seventh.”

She nodded and stood by my side taking a closer look at me, which made me feel uncomfortable.

“Are you ok?” another question.

“Excuse me?” I was really surprised with that one.

“Don’t get me wrong. It’s just you’re pale.”

“Oh.. no, no I’m fine. It’s just my first day.” I explained and could feel my checks turning a little red.

“So, you must be Destiny Adams, right? JJ cousin?”

“Yes, how do you know?”

“Oh, I’m Emily Prentiss. I work in the BAU and everyone knows who you are. JJ can’t shut up about it for a while now.” She smiled and shook my hand. *oh.. great. I’m famous*- I thought ironic, but smiled back. “Welcome to the team, Destiny.” She said as leaving, when we reached 7th floor. I got out after her, but didn’t really know what to do next. I looked around trying to think of something useful. *Get yourself together, Adams! With your IQ you’re supposed to find a way out of every uncomfortable situation!* I thought, took a deep breath and started going straight ahead, passing curious people, who were now staring at me.

“Excuse me, where’s Aaron Hotchenr’s office?” I asked tall guy, with medium length hair, who was standing next to the coffee machine. He looked like he was only about two or three years older than me.

“Oh, um, it’s over there.” He said blushing a little, pointing his finger to the left.

“Thanks.” I smiled and went to the door he showed. I knocked and waited until somebody would invite me in, but didn’t hear a sound.

“He’s not there, Destiny.” I heard familiar voice, which must’ve been my cousin JJ.

“Hi Jenifer.” I said, giving her a hug.

“It’s good to see you again and I’m really happy to work with you. You probably can’t wait to meet the team?” she asked stepping back, so she could look at me.

“Yeah.. you know me…” I said laughing. “I already met Emily.”

“Great, five more left. Oh, I see Spence, over there. Hey, Reid, come over here for a second!” she said waving to the guy I just asked for the way.

“JJ?” he asked with his voice shaking a little.

“I want you to meet my cousin and our new team member. Spencer Reid this is Destiny Adams.” She introduced us and stepped aside so we could shake hands.

“Nice meeting you.” I said.

“Yes.. yes, nice meeting you to.” He said and blushed again.

“From now on, you won’t be the only kid in our team, Spencer.” JJ smiled at him, as he looked confused. “Destiny’s twenty five. So two years younger.”

“But still smarter.” I winked at her.

“True, she’s just like walking encyclopedia. You two should get along.”

“Yes, of course. I have to go.. get the reports ready.” He said and left, before I could even think of anything to say.

“Wow, that was odd.” I said.

“Don’t worry, it’s just his thing, but he’s a great guy, when you get to know him.” she explained.

“And who is that?” I asked her looking at the man, who just walked in. he was tall, dark skinned. I think that word ‘handsome’ is not enough in his case.

“Oh, that’s Derek Morgan. He’s also working with us. Derek!”

“No! Don’t do this.” I hissed, but it was too late.

“Hey, JJ, what’s up? And who’s that beautiful creature?” he asked looking at me. Now I felt like Spencer. Now he made me blush.

“My cousin, Destiny Adams. She’s new in here.”

“Pleasure to meet you, cutie.” He said shaking my hand and all I could do was smile. “Hey, you look familiar, have we met before?”

“No. It’s just that people tells me I look like Miranda Kerr, you know, the model. Maybe that’s the thing.” I answered.

“No, you look better.” He winked “Have a good first day and hope to see you in the field soon. Now I got to go, Garcia’s waiting with some news.” He said, smiled and walked away.

“Was he real?” I asked looking at him walking out.

“Yeah, Derek is our team sex god. You have to get used to it. It’s just the way he is.”

And so I did. I got used to it in a way, that almost a year later, I actually couldn’t live without him.

“Adams! Adams, wake up.” I heard Emily’s voice from above my head.

“Oh, wait, what’s going on?” I asked almost jumping on my seat and opening my eyes. Immediately got blinded by the winter sun.

“We’re about to touch down. You fell asleep.” She explained as I was looking around. All eyes of my team members were on me now. I realized that I was dreaming about him, again. For the next time this week I was dreaming about Derek Morgan and the day I first met him. I’ve been a member of BAU team for almost a year now and still couldn’t help but felt my knees getting weaker every time he spoke to me.

“Ok, so now, how deep is the lake Tahoe?” Hotch asked looking at Reid, who started to wonder about the answer.

“501” I said without a thought.

“Good job, baby girl. But too bad for Reid. He’s now probably thinking about exchanging some parts of his brain, to make him work faster.” Derek laughed

“It’s impossible to change your brains parts.” Reid replied looking at Derek and now everybody followed him with laughter.

“Morgan, you and Adams will go to the crime scene and see if there’s anything unusual. Prentiss and Rossi you’ll talk to the victim’s family, Reid, JJ and I will go to the police station.” Hotch said and everyone nodded.

“Looks like it’s going to be only you and me now.” Morgan said and winked at me.

“Sounds good to me.” I said and regretted it after a while, when Derek gave me this strange look.

“Where’s the crime scene?” I asked as he was driving the car.

“Lake Tahoe. You don’t think Hotch would ask about how deep it is, only so you could use your brain, right?” he said turning left. I looked outside at the trees covered in snow. It was beginning of February and everything outside seemed so calm. I decided to remain silence, was too damn sure I’d say something that would make me feel even more uncomfortable.

“Here we are. This is where we change our mean of transport.” He said pulling over, by the shore.

“Changing?” I asked looking out the window at the big lake.

“You really didn’t hear anything we’ve said on the plain, did you? The body was dumped in the middle of the way, we need to get there. And as far as we both know it’s impossible to do it by car, so we have this beautiful motor-boat over there, that will take us to the spot.” He explained and left the car. I jumped out of it and followed him.

“We see the crime scene. We don’t have to get there.” I protested, but he wouldn’t listen.

“We need to see exactly, what the killer saw.” he was now getting into the boat. “Come on. It’s getting darker and as far as I love being with you, I prefer to do it in places where there’s not so cold.” He tried to persuade me to go.

“Do we really have to?” I knew I was acting stubborn, but I was always afraid of water, where I couldn’t see the bottom. It didn’t matter if I was in the boat or not. I didn’t know what was below me and this big dark spot underneath my legs was really making me scared. But I didn’t want to admit it out loud.

“Ok, I was hoping I wouldn’t have to do this.” He said and I was pretty sure, he’d go there by himself, but to my surprise he just got out of the boat, came to me and out me over his shoulder.

“Derek! Put me down!” I said, but it didn’t work. He got back to the boat, started the engine and when he was sure I couldn’t leave, he put me down. “It will take us a moment to get there.” He said.

I couldn’t believe he just did this to me. Dragged me there almost by force and made me sit in the boast that could sink any minute. *I can’t believe I wanted to tell him how I feel, during this thing we have to do here.* I thought and sighed.

After a while we were there. He stopped the boat and stood up.

“It’s almost the middle of the lake, what do you think about it?” he asked.

“I think that we should get back.” I said closing my eyes. I didn’t want to look, It could make me start panicking.

“What is it with you today, huh?”

“Nothing. can we just get on with it?” I asked and decided to get myself together. I stood up and looked around. “Yeah it’s almost the middle. I have no idea what made the un-sub get here. Maybe it has a deeper meaning for him. I can’t see anything unusual, from where I stand.”

“Speaking of depth, how deep it is in here? What do you think?” he asked leaning over the board. I didn’t answer, just closed my eyes.

“Destiny? Girl, seriously, what’s going on?” he asked once again.

“I’m afraid of water.” I said finally. “Maybe not just water, but when I can’t see the bottom, it makes me so damn scared, you can’t even imagine.” I said it so quietly.

“Is there a reason?” he asked calmly.

“Just a story, of when I was a child, it was summer, me and my friend decided to go and swim. We weren’t supposed to get anywhere farther than the swimming pool, but I decided it would be better to swim in the lake. And because I’ve always been a trouble maker I persuaded or rather forced her to go to the lake. I swim really good and got far away from the shore. I was diving, without a mask or anything, just with my eyes closed. I was in a place, where I couldn’t see what was underneath me and when I felt something touching my leg I freaked out. I opened my eyes and saw a body. You can imagine how it ended up.” My voice was shaking.

I never really liked to tell this story to anyone. Even JJ, didn’t hear it from me and we were really close. But when I was with Derek, I felt like I could tell him my thoughts. Open up without a fear of being laughed at.

“It’s ok, baby girl, it’s ok.” He put his arms around me and tried to comfort me. “Destiny, open your eyes. Look at me.” He insisted. I did as he said and looked right into his eyes. “You’re safe with me. I won’t let anything happen to you, ok? Trust me.”

“I trust you with my life.” I said and felt my face turning red. He smiled, kissed my check and hugged me again.

“Let’s get back, baby.” And with those words we headed back to the car.

When we were driving back to the police station none of us said a thing. I knew, it was my turn to say something. I actually fought with my thoughts, because one part of me wanted to tell him that I was madly in love with him and couldn’t survive a day off, without seeing his face, but other part wanted to wait.

“Thank you, for what you’ve done out there.” I said finally.

“If you told me earlier I’d go there by myself.” He said still looking on the road.

“No, it’s good thing that I’ve gone there with you.” I replied. *because otherwise you wouldn’t hold me or kiss me* and added that in my mind.

“I’m hoping it wasn’t all that bad.”

“No, you made me feel better.” I managed to look at him.

“You’re my favorite girl in the world, I couldn’t stand it seeing you suffer like that. Besides, I like changing your point of view.” He said and looked at me. Just then I felt it was THAT moment. Moment, when I could tell him what i’ve been holding up in myself for such a long time.

“Derek.. I wanted to tell you something.” I started and to my surprise he started to slow down and after a while stopped the car on the side of the road.

“Go on, baby girl.” He encouraged me.

I really wanted to do this, but just then the telephone rang. I looked at the ID. It was Reid.

“You’ve ruined the aura, kid.” Derek said when I put him on the speaker.

“What?”

“Never mind. What is it so important you wanted to tell us, that couldn’t wait?”

And that’s how that beautiful moment got totally screwed up.

We didn’t go back to that talk after this. We sort of pretended, this never happened. It was February 14th and we didn’t have a case, so everyone decided to go out earlier.

“Oh, I can’t wait to get home.” Prentiss sighed staring at the clock.

“What can be so important?” Rossi asked sitting on her desk.

“I have a hot date with my bathtub.” She replied with a smile.

“Sounds good to me.” Morgan laughed and I felt awkward.

“Don’t get too excited, because you’re not invited.”

“Wow, since when are you a poet?” he teased her.

“Since I feel like it.”

Everybody started to laugh, so did I.

“Hey, Spencer, how about your date for tonight?” JJ asked.

“What? Um.. I think I’m going to do something different this evening. I will go to the movies.” He said and everyone looked really surprised.

“You’re going to the movies?” Dave was probably the one who was surprised more than others.

“Yes. Why is it so weird?” Spencer didn’t get it.

“You’re going with someone?” Emily asked and I couldn’t help but answer on his behalf.

“Emily, come on. The last time I checked books didn’t have eyes.”

And so once again everybody started laughing.

“You going?” JJ asked me, when everyone was leaving the office.

“No, I’m going to stay a while, have to finish some reports.” I said sitting at my desk.

“You really want to work on Valentine’s?” she was hoping, she could persuade me to leave.

“Since you know I don’t like this holiday, because it’s too commercial.” I explained.

“Yeah, whatever.” She said getting into the elevator.

I ended up all alone in there, at least so I thought.

“Brought you some coffee.” I heard Derek’s voice from behind my back.

“Thanks. You didn’t go with them?” I asked taking a cup from him.

“No. I have other plans for tonight.” He answered sitting on the top of my desk.

I could feel my heart almost breaking.

“Oh, so.. you have a date?” I asked and bowed my head over the files, so he couldn’t see sorrow in my eyes.

“I don’t know, you tell me.” He answered and I felt his hand gently placed on my chin, to lift my head.

“And.. how would I know about it?”

“Because it’s Valentine’s day and I hope, that you don’t have anything to do as well. Besides, we didn’t have a chance to finish our conversation.” He said.

“It’s a stupid holiday. I don’t believe in the meaning of it. What’s romantic in fake cards, flowers and showing off with your relationship?” that was all I could think of.

“Well, Destiny. As I said, I like changing your point of view.” He said and leaned over me to kiss my lips, before I could even say a word. At first I had no idea what to do, but after a while I felt amazing. It was the best gift I could get.

“You can change it more often, with such measures.” I whispered when we were catching a breath.

“So, do I have a date?” he smiled.

“I’ll just get my coat.” I replied and stood up, to get it.

That night he changed my point of view to more than just one thing. Derek Morgan was everything I needed and never stopped surprising me. He made me believe I really was his favorite girl in the world.
