Everything Is Second To Your Dreams

Melody’s POV.

I woke up the next day to the annoying buzz of my cell phone, I mumbled curse words to myself as I reached my left arm over to my other pillow, picking my cell up off it before accepting the call, not bothering to open my eyes.

“Hello?” I mumbled as I pulled my covers back over my head.

“Melody it’s three in the afternoon! Don’t you have your session in an hour?” Alexis exclaimed as I sat up bolt right.

“You’re not serious? I slept for seventeen hours?! That’s insane.” I said in disbelief, jumping out of bed quickly.

“Good thing I woke you up then, you owe me.” She said, a smirk evident in her voice.

“Yeah, yeah. What’ll it be this time? Starbucks or letting you borrow my car?”

“None of those.”

I raised an eyebrow, opening the doors of my closet with my free hand. “What do you mean? it’s always one of those.”

“Not this time, Sunshine. All I want is for you to have a good session today.”

It was silent for a good minute before I spoke, “Are you on crack?”

“Always. I’m going now, I’ll call you later.”

“Bye.” I laughed as she hung up, that was possibly the weirdest conversation I’d ever had with Alexis, and believe me when I said I’d had a lot. I picked out a pair of acid wash skinny jeans, my Black Chuck Taylor Hi-tops, my Black Glamour Kills “I want to be infinite” tee with my Blue American Apparel hoodie before reaching in one of my bottom draws and pulled out my necessities for the day. I shoved my cell in my hoodie pocket as I opened the door to my bathroom before shutting the door behind me. I turned the shower on as I began to undress, I couldn’t believe I slept for seventeen hours, but I knew it was all down to Jordan not being in my dream, I didn’t even have that dream, infact, I couldn’t remember dreaming of anything at all. As I stepped into the shower and let the hot water rain down on my skin I realised I didn’t handle challenging situations very well as I reflected on the events of the previous day. After being in the shower for a good fifteen minutes or so I turned it off and hoped out of the shower, wrapping a towel around my short frame and one around my head. I reached into my hoodie pocket as I pulled my cell out, biting my lip as I glanced at the time. I only had twenty minutes to sort myself out and drive to Greenfield, I had to hurry. I got dressed at the speed of light, lacing up my Chuck Taylor’s as I contemplated what to do with my hair, but considering I didn’t have a lot of time on my hands, I decided to leave it naturally curly. I brushed my teeth and applied make-up quickly before running over to my dirty clothes and made my way out of my bathroom as fast as I could, tossing them on my bed as I ran out of the room and into my kitchen, over to the refrigerator. I pulled out a carton of Apple Juice and grabbed a glass from the cupboard before filling it half full, gulping down its contents before putting the top back on the carton, shoving it back in the refrigerator before placing my glass in the sink, careful not to break it as I rushed over to the island, grabbing my keys and running over to my door. I hurriedly pulled it open and closing it behind me before running down the two flights of stairs, taking them two at a time. I hated being late for things at the best of times, but I knew if I was late for one of my sessions I could consider my ass kicked. As I reached the bottom step and made my way out of the front door and over to my car I couldn’t help but smile, I hadn’t had the dream last night, so I wasn’t in need of any more sessions after that one, considering the point of them was to go through the dream step by step and talk about what had changed in an attempt to make sense of it. I unlocked my car, jumping in, closing the door and starting it up before I buckled my seatbelt. I had a weird feeling in my stomach as I reversed out of the parking lot and began to drive to Greenfield, it was almost like a sad feeling, although I had no idea why, I was happy beyond words to be rid of the dream, but I knew it’d be weird to not have it anymore as I’d become so accustom to having it over the couple of weeks, I also couldn’t help but think it was trying to convey a different message, of what though, I had no idea. As I pulled into the familiar parking lot I pulled the keys out of the ignition as I shoved my left hand in my pocket, grabbing my cell and glancing at the screen.

“Shit.” I mumbled to myself as I realised I had three minutes until my session. I jumped out of the car and made my way through the familiar revolving doors quickly. I bit my lip as I quickened my pace, not wanting to be late. I turned the corner and walked down the white corridor, the sound of my hurried footsteps hitting the tiles as I checked my cell once more, practically running as it read 15:58. I smiled to myself as I saw my destination in sight, only to come to a halt a few steps before as I noticed someone was leaning against the door of the room I needed to be in, in precisely two minutes.

“What are you doing here?” I questioned as I raised an eyebrow.

Jordan shoved his hands in his Yellow American Apparel hoodie pockets before replying, “I wanted to talk to you.”

“How did you even know I’d be here? At this time? I’ve got to admit, I’m a little creeped out.”

“I have ways.” He shrugged.

“Way to dig yourself a bigger hole.” I said as I pushed my hair out of my face before shoving both of my hands in my pockets, leaning against the wall.

“So, are you going to tell me your name or what?” He questioned, ignoring my previous comment as he looked at me intently.

Once again though, as I opened my mouth to speak my psychiatrists door flew open as she stepped out.

“Melody! You’re two minutes late!” She snapped, pushing her glasses up her nose as she glared at me.

“Sorry, I-”

“No excuses- Jordan? What are you doing here? Your session isn’t for another hour.”

“Your what?” I questioned in disbelief.

My psychiatrist looked from Jordan, to me, and back again.

“What‘s going on?”

“I think I should be the one asking that, what the hell?!” I exclaimed before I spoke again, not giving her the chance to answer, “Nevermind, can we get this session over with?” I mumbled as I walked into her room, not saying another word.

“Jordan, why don’t you join us? After all, you’re going through the same thing.”

I stopped dead in my tracks as I spun around to face them both, “You knew about this? After two weeks of me thinking I was going insane you knew he was part of my dream?!”

She once again looked from Jordan, to me, and back again.

“He’s definitely the boy?”

I nodded in response, “The dream’s stopped, I didn’t have it last night, can I just go?”

She shook her head as she pointed to the seat that I’d sat in fourteen times prior as I sighed in defeat and sat down. I narrowed my eyes at her as she ushered Jordan into the room, closing the door quickly behind him before grabbing the sleeve of his hoodie and pulling him over to where I was sat.

“Sit on the arm.” She demanded as he nodded before sitting down.

I sighed as I moved over in the overly large chair, “You can sit next to me.” I mumbled.

He smiled in thanks and sat down next to me as I began to fiddle with my hands awkwardly.

My psychiatrist sat opposite us, her clipboard at the ready before she spoke, “To answer your question Melody, yes I was pretty certain beforehand that Jordan was the boy in your dream as you’ve both told me pretty much the same story but from different perspectives, I couldn’t tell you of course as it’s client confidentiality, although this is very extraordinary.”

“Right, extraordinary.” I grumbled as I ran a hand through my hair.

She cleared her throat before speaking again, “I have another confession to make.” She smiled sheepishly as I raised an eyebrow.

“Do you know what? Just throw it at me, nothing surprises me anymore.” I scoffed.

“I suggested Jordan getting in contact with the manager of Recreational, Melody. Considering he’s an up-coming musician I thought it would be perfect, plus it was a much easier way for you two to meet than me just throwing you together in a session and exclaiming about you two having very similar, well the same dream.”

I bit my lip as I tried to process what was happening before speaking, “I don’t even know what to say.” I sighed as I glanced at Jordan, then to my our psychiatrist.

“Believe me when I say I have no idea why you’re having these dreams, more so why you’re both in each others, but it seems you have some kind of unexplainable connection.” She said before she began to scribble down notes on her clipboard.

“We don’t have a connection. That’s just crazy, this is just one crazy trainwreck.” I exclaimed.

“Melody when are you just going to accept it? This is happening for a reason.”

“And what reason could that possibly be?” Jordan questioned.

“I don’t know as of yet, it’s down to you two to find out.”

“So what you’re saying is you want us to spend time together?” I asked, furrowing my eyebrows.

“That’s exactly what I’m saying, whether it’s in reality, or in your dreams.” She said, moving to the edge of her seat.

“Do you know how bizarre that sounds?”

“This isn’t exactly a normal situation though, is it?” He laughed, looking at me.

I shrugged. “I guess not.”

“I think it’s safe to call these sessions off as of now, considering you both know who the other is and I suppose you could say it‘s not so strange, it doesn’t look like you’ll be needing someone else apart from eachother to speak to about this anymore. Of course though, if you have any enquires or need to book another session for whatever reason please don’t hesitate, it’s been nice meeting you both.” She smiled as she placed her pen on her clipboard.

Jordan stood up first, extending a hand out to me. I hesitated slightly before taking hold of his hand as he pulled me up.

“Thanks for, well, everything.“ I smiled, letting go of his hand as my psychiatrist nodded.

I smiled once more as Jordan and I made our way towards the door, “This is so bizarre.” He whispered to me as I placed my hand over the doorknob.

“Oh and Melody, Jordan?” We heard from behind us, our heads snapping around to face the psychiatrist for one last time, waiting for her to continue. “Good luck.”

I nodded as I twisted the doorknob, hearing the faint ‘click’ as I pushed it open far enough for Jordan and I to both get through as he shut it behind him.

I pulled my cell out of my pocket, glancing at the time.

“Need to be somewhere?” He questioned, shoving his hands in his hoodie pockets once more.

“I have to be at work in thirty.” I said, shoving my cell back in my pocket.

“Thirty minutes is enough time to grab Coffee, isn’t it?”

I laughed as I glanced over at him, “I guess so.”

We began to walk in a comfortable silence to the Starbucks that was located only a block away from Greenfield that I normally visited before my session if I had a little time to spare or sometimes after when I didn’t have to be at work immediately after, not so surprisingly though, Jordan knew the Starbucks just as well as I did as he revealed that he was a regular there too, things just kept getting weirder and weirder as time progressed. I couldn’t help but let my mind wander as we walked though as to why I’d never seen him seen him there before, or anywhere for that matter, it really was like he’d just appeared out of thin air and in a sense it scared me, not because I was alarmed, it scared me because I suppose you could say I liked it, and I didn’t have the slightest clue as to why. As we sat opposite eachother in one of the booths at the far end of Starbucks I began to open up and relax a little. It was nice to have someone to talk to about the bizarre dream, someone who also knew first hand how strange and extraordinary I guess you could say, it really was. We spent the little time I had before work attempting to get to know each other better in reality whilst trying to push the dream state aside. I also felt bad for not giving him a chance to say much without me cutting him off the previous day as it was clear to see that he was genuinely a nice guy and I was wrong for not taking his feelings into consideration about what was happening, or had happened to us both.

“Do you feel awkward?” He questioned suddenly.

I raised an eyebrow, “Wh-”

“I mean, do you feel awkward being here? With me?”

Did I?

I shrugged, bringing my coffee to my lips and taking a sip before responding, “Surprisingly no.”

“Coming from you, I’ll take that as a compliment.” He laughed.

“Oh you should. Feel honoured.” I joked as he rolled his eyes before chucking the spoon he’d used to stir his Latte at me.

“You’re so modest, Melody. Really.” He scoffed as I glared at him, wiping the small amount of Latte splatters off of my arm with my hoodie sleeve.

As I opened my mouth to shoot an insult his way I immediately snapped it shut as a middle aged woman with short choppy blonde hair that clung to her face accompanied by the biggest pair of glasses I’d genuinely ever seen on a human being as they took up the majority of her face, wearing what I could only describe as one hell of an expensive black suit with the Starbucks badge with the position “Senior Manager” on it placed neatly on the right side of it made her way over to us before stopping dead at the end of our booth.

“I’m sorry but you two are disturbing the peace and tranquillity in here, so either tone it down, or leave.” She glared coldly before turning on her heel and walking away.

“Yeah Witzigreuter, quit disturbing the peace.” I smirked as I brought my mug of Coffee to my lips once more as I drank some before placing it down on the table in front of us, digging my cell out of my pocket, quickly glancing at the time. I had ten minutes to get to work, I bit my lip as I realised something, I was truly starting to enjoy his company.

“I have to go.” I sighed as I finished my Coffee before standing up, “Thanks for the Coffee.” I grinned as he too stood up, making his way out of the booth.

“It’s no problem,” he said before hesitantly speaking again, “That is, if we can do it again sometime? you know, just to talk about this insane mind fuck we know as a dream?”

“I knew there’d be a catch.” I joked as he tossed me his cell for me to put my number in. I tapped the keys quickly and saved my number, tossing it back to him.

“This number is legit, right?” He questioned, raising an eyebrow.

“Hello paranoia.” I laughed as I pulled my cell out of my pocket, “Call it.”

He chuckled before pressing ‘call’ as my cell vibrated in my hand.

“In my defence, like you said earlier, nothing surprises me anymore.” He scoffed, shoving his hands in his pockets as we made our way out of Starbucks.

“Me neither.” I agreed as we walked the short distance back over to the Greenfield parking lot in a comfortable silence once more.

“Do you want a ride?” I offered as he shook his head, “Thanks but no thanks, I only live a couple of blocks away.” He smiled, “I’ll see you around?”

“I‘m sure one way or another you will.” I laughed as he hesitantly outstretched his arms, unsure if it were a good idea or not. After a moments hesitation on my behalf, I stepped into his embrace, his arms tightening around me as I mimicked his actions. Within the short time that I was in his arms, as crazy as it sounds, it felt familiar. Everything from the firm grip that he had on me, to the warmth of his touch, everything was familiar, yet I knew that I had never been held like that by him before as nothing like it had ever occurred in the dream.

“Bye Melody.” He smiled as we broke apart.

“Bye Jordan.” I smiled back, opening my car door before jumping inside quickly.

As I reversed out of Starbucks, I waved at Jordan once more before pulling out onto the main road as I drove the short distance to Recreational. I bit my lip as I laughed to myself, turning up the radio. After two weeks of not sleeping, two weeks of feeling like I was being driven to the brink of insanity, I felt content. I pulled into my spot in the car park behind the back entrance of the club, pulling the keys out and opening my door before jumping out, shutting it behind me before locking it and shoving the keys into my pocket, making my way to the door. I pulled it open quickly and stepped inside, walking through the club as I noticed quite a few people scattered around, more than the day before.

“You’re late, I’m firing you!” Tony joked as he ruffled my hair.

“You wouldn’t fire me, besides, your ego’s inflated after how many compliments you got for The Ready Set last night, you’re on top of the world right now.” I laughed as I patted down my hair, shooting him a glare.

“That’s true. Did I mention I rock?” He said smugly before walking off.

“All the time!” I called after him, making my way towards the front of the club before turning, pushing the door open and joining Alexis behind the bar.

“We’re having words.” I laughed, narrowing my eyes at her as she smiled innocently.

“Whatever it is, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Alex, you and I both know that’s complete bullshit. I know you sent Jordan to Greenfield, So all I can say is-”

I smiled in amusement as she flinched, thinking I was going to throw some insults her way.

“Thank you.”

“I’m sorry!“ She squealed, “Wait, what?”

“He’s not that bad I guess.” I shrugged.

“Damn, I’m good. I’m pissed you’ve stolen my husband though.” She huffed playfully, cleaning some dirty glasses.

“You can still have your husband.” I said, rolling my eyes playfully.

“Nah, I don’t want him anymore. He’s your dream boy.”

“Yeah, right.” I scoffed.

“Tony’s talking about getting him, well them, well whatever the fuck you want to call The Ready Set back in a few days, he’s talking about making them our ‘feature band’ or something.” She laughed, doing quotations with her fingers.

“I’m down for that.” I chuckled as my cell vibrated in my pocket.

“So, at the end of the day you’ll definitely see him around.” She smiled in triumph, happy with what she’d managed to accomplish over the past twenty four hours.

I pulled my cell out and glanced at the screen quickly before shoving it back in its previous place.

“Maybe. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.” I shrugged before turning away from Alexis, unable to shake the smile that had formed on my face as I bit my lip.

One New Message.

I’ll see you in my dreams.
