I Need You So Much Closer
Take my hand and we will run away.
This was not happening, I had lost my friend, Claire, in the craziness of the Warped Tour crowd, she had the map to the stages, and her phone was dead. Great. Just great. I looked around and tried to peer my head over the crowd to see if I could find her, it was no use. She was gone from my site. I felt like time slowed down, and everyone was walking in slow motion around me, while I spun around helplessly in the California July heat in the middle of all of this chaos. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and checked the time, 2:30. Seriously? This was not happening. We were on our way to the Alligator stage to see The Maine’s set at 3:15. I was going to miss it. I spotted a guy with toned arms and dreads, he looked like he worked here, he was leaning up a fence just chilling, I maneuvered through the tight crowd over to him, and in the process got sweat on me from twenty different people--ew.
“Sorry to bother you, but do you know where the Alligator stage is? Or at least know how to get there?” I inquired.
“I‘m actually looking for that same stage.” he confessed, a smile forming on his face.
“Oh, I thought you worked here, sorry.” I apologized, feeling my cheeks warm up from embarrassment.
“Don‘t apologize, we all make silly mistakes.” he removed his sunglasses and winked. “I‘m Nathan.”
I watched as his hand extended towards me, a friendly smile on his face, “I‘m Alison, but I go by Ally.” I replied shaking his hand.
“It‘s very nice to meet you. If you want, we could go find that stage together?” he offered. I looked at him, trying to find something about him that would give me a good reason to say no. “I‘m not a creep, I swear.” he spoke up, laughing a little.
I glanced at the time on my phone, 2:45. I might as well, I’ve got nothing to lose. “Alright.” I shrugged.
He pushed off of the fence and started walking in the direction I last saw Claire walking. I stood there motionless as I watched him walk away. He was wearing denim skinny jeans and an black MGMT tank top, exposing his muscular arms. His shoulder length dreads were held back with a headband thing. Nathan stopped walking and turned back around to face me, “You coming?”
“Yeah, sorry.” I smiled and followed after him. Now I was lost with a stranger, a very good looking one for that matter. I quickly caught up and was soon walking in step next to him, he was practically a whole head taller than me, I guess he used that to his advantage to inch our way through the small spaces in the crowd.
“So who are you here for?”
“The Maine, but I‘ll go to a few more shows, I want to see A Rocket To The Moon, Cash Cash and Every Avenue, too. I don‘t know if I‘ll be able to, seeing as I got separated from my friend, Claire.”
“Nice choice in music.” he smiled down at me, “I kind of wandered away from my group of friends on accident.” he admitted, sticking his hands far down in his two front pockets.
“Seems like we both have trouble staying with our friends, that probably makes us the worst pair to be walking around this crowded place.”
“Probably.” he laughed, squeezing through two people in front of us. “It looks like there’s an information booth up there, they should have maps.” he noted. He glanced down to his side to find I wasn’t there, he stopped walking and turned around. I was stuck behind a slow couple, the one he weaved around. He laughed and gently grabbed my upper arm, “You’re too polite, now I know why you got separated from your friend! You have to be pushy!”
I was too aware of his hand hanging onto my arm to come back with a smart response, I just nodded and laughed. I watched as his hand slowly yet swiftly slid down my arm and his hand grabbed mine. I looked at his hand in mine as he pulled me through the crowd and over to the information booth. I quickly snapped myself out of the ‘gorgeous boy is holding your hand’ phase, and mini heart attack.
