Complications Between Mythical Creatures

Training

An ocean of green rustled above us while the morning sun watching over head, it's curiousity piqued at the scene below. A fresh wind blew out hair round and round, the scent of pine needles and oak tree dancing in the air. A few trees near by were splintered and dented in the trunk. One or two of them were actually broken nearly completely through.

The both of us were breathing heavy, backs hunched over slightly while our fist were balled up and ready to strike.

My eyelids were getting heavy, body a little banged up and covered in dirt. I tried my best to regain and control my breathe. In through you nose, and out through your mouth. I instructed my self over and over again.

“Okay,” she breathed, “I give up.” I watched her raise her hands in defeat, her breath coming out jagged. My best friend, Abby, collapsed herself on to the dirt filled ground with a huff. I let out a breathless laugh relaxing my stance.

A smile played on my lips as I made my way over to where she lay. Resting my head on Abby's stomach I layed down next to her. “Funny,” I breathed, “I was about to give up too,” I closed my eyes. “Seriously ?!” she looked down at me. I nodded in response, “Aw man ! Come on ! I almost always lose ...” she grumbled making me laugh.

“Oh relax ! Maybe next time you'll win.”

“Oh relax. Maybe next time you'll win,” she made an ugly face, mimicking me. I could only laugh at her.

Abigail Charleston. She has been my best friend ever since that day when she realized who, or I guess what would be a better word for it, was. Much to my surprise she is just like me. I never thought that there was another person like me. Let alone family. The only other people that I knew who were just like me were my parents. But they don't count.

It all started in the third grade. When I almost accidentally let it slip. I was so mad at a bunch of girls in our class. They were always picking on me. Calling me a loser or a copycat because I always did and had a lot of the same things they did. But I knew that that wasn't true. But that didn't mean that it didn't hurt.

You know that saying “sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me” ? Well that saying didn't apply to me. To us. And how your parents tell you that everyones special in their own way and that everyone has a gift ? Well, we and our “gifts” were on a whole other level.

“Hey, Scar ?” Abby said, interupting my thoughts. She rested her head on her palms underneath. “Mm ?” I stretched out my legs, wiggling my toes in my running shoes. “You know what sounds good ?”

“Mm ?”

“If we went to First Beach,” Abby propped herself up on her elbows. I let the thought sink in. “Hmm … Sounds good to me.”

“Really ?” she grinned wide at me, excitement bouncing in her eyes.

“Yeah really,” I laughed sitting up, “but I want to take a nap first and then take a shower after. Actually switch that.”

“But you're gona get wet anyway,” she rolled her eyes at me.

“Yeah, but you know how I am after we train. I feel dirty,” I grimanced taking my long hair out of its ponytail. I shook my long brown hair loose, feeling the subtle breeze.

“Alright,” she chuckled at me, “let's get going then.” Abby instructed, but neither of us moved. I peered up at Abby just as she did the same. The silence we shared was broken by a chorus of laughter, “Okay okay,” I breathed beginning to stand up, “Come on, Abs.” I reached my hand down to her. Taking it, Abby reluctantly pulled herself up with a huff.

“Hey, Mom,” I greeted my mother as Abby and I walked in through the back door. “Hi, Mom,” Abby smiled widely closeing the door behind her. “Hey girls,” she chuckled taking in our appearances, “Done training ?” I took a look down at myself in my black spandex and green t-shirt that were covered in dirt and sweat. On the way back to my house I had tied my hair in a messy bun which was making loose hairs fall around my face. “Yeup,” I tucked the loose strands of hair behind my ears.

You see, Abby and I have been training all morning. Like a lot of people who are really in to their training we started since the sun rose, and now it's almost 1 PM. And we were almost completely out of energy. Yeah we do crunches and running and all that when we train. But there is something else that we do. And this is where our “gifts” play their roles.

“Hungry ?” my mom asked as I walked over to the icebox and pulled out a couple of water bottles while Abby sat down at the island.

“Thirsty, too,” she breathed after chugging down more than half of her drink. I shook my head with a chuckle.

“Obviously,” my mom rose an eyebrow at her making us all laugh. At this point, Abby was just like my sister. Hell, I call her sister already. We call each others moms “Mom” and she practically lives at my house. “So how was training ?” the atmosphere grew a little serious.

When it comes to training my mom gets serious. She doubles as my mom and my teacher but not as my academic teacher. Oh no, I went to La Push High School just like all the other teenagers on the reservation. “Good,” me and Abby said in unison after exchanging a quick glance. We both knew what was coming next, “Alright, let's see a little bit,” a serious smirk came to her lips before she turned and walked towards the door me and Abby just came in. Exchanging an exhausted look we reluctantly stood, knowing that there would be no way to get out of this.

“Okay, Abby you first,” my mom stood on back porch watching as Abby and I stood about ten feet away from each other a few yards away from the house. She nodded at her, “What do you want me to do ?” she asked centering and gathering her energy.

“I want you to create a wind big enough to knock down the all the leaves on that tree,” she pointed at a large oak tree not far from where we stood.

“Okay,” abby nodded.

“And only that tree. I don't want you to touch or make a single leaf on another tree rustle. Okay ?” she looked at her, hands clasped behind her. Abby nodded once more. “Ready ?” my mom prompted her, “Begin.”

With that last word Abby's eyes filled with determination, her hands flexed, fingers firm. A soft breeze began to pick up, swirling around us. I watched her, taking in the image of her guiding the light gust with her hands. Almost like she was dancing. The breeze picked up, leaving us and making it's way over to the indicated tree. Faster and stronger the wind started whacking the leaves bunches by bunches off the tree. Abby's hands move round and round, pushing the wind faster.

Finally, all the leaves were off of the tree all landing safely on the ground below. Letting out a breath, Abby relaxed her arms standing and turning to my mom. “How was that ?” she smiled a little tired. “Not bad, but you knocked down more than just that tree.” Mom pointed back to the forest, making Abby and I turn. We both looked up at the now naked tree.

At first I didn't see anything wrong with what she had done. But then I saw it. The trees that surrounded the naked one hand a few bald branches that were the closest to it. By the groan that I heard I could tell that Abby saw it too. “Don't worry, Abby. You're improving. Before you couldn't even target just one tree,” Mom chuckled lightly at her. She was right, before this Abby couldn't even muster up a wind so big. “Thanks, Mom,” she said with a tired smile. Her energy was running really low, she looked a little pale. Abby's breath was coming out in soft huffs, her chest heaving up and down. It looked like she was struggling to breathe a little.

“I think that may have been a little too much, why don't you sit down and watch Scarlet do her turn and then I'll cook you two up a big feast.” We perked up, Fooooooood! I could feel my mouth water. Abby greatfully sat down on one of the lounge chairs that sat on the back porch.

“Okay, Scar. You're up.” I stood up straight, getting ready.

“What do I do ?” I asked.

“I want you to pick up the leaves and put them back on the tree.” My mouth mentally dropped. Oh my goodness … I'm already tired ! Mom's trying to run my energy down to zero. I sucked up my thought, knowing that I can't complain. “Right,” I sighed.

“Ready … Start.” Just like Abby earlier my hands flexed but instead of lifting completely they remained at my sides. I've been trying to work on using less hands and more mind. Staring at the pile of leaves I imagined them lifting off the ground into the air. One by one the leaves rose up into the air. Pushing as much as I could at a time, I hoisted them up back on to the branches.

I could feel myself loosing more and more energy. Suck it up, Scar. I told myself, bitting my lip. “Okay, Scar. You can let it drop now,” I heard my moms instructions. Greatfully, I relaxed my muscles. My hands dropped down to my sides making the leaves drop down to the ground with a loud whoosh, causing a small flock of birds fly off in fear of the sudden sound disturbing their peace.

I let out a lung full of air that I hadn't realized I had been holding in. By breathing was coming out fast and deep. Just like Abby, I was huffing and puffing. My eyesight began to dim, dark balls of light were dancing in and out of my line of sight. “Wow,” Mom looked at me, “you two must have been working hard to have burn off all that energy before this. Or was that too difficult ?” I made my way over to her, holding on to the porch railing for support while I walked up the steps.

“We've kind of been pushing it a bit harder than usual this week,” Abby admitted while I dropped on to the chair beside hers. My mom raised an eyebrow at this, “Really ?” Abby and I nodded. “Wow, I'm proud of you girls. But I'm a little worried at the same time, you two'd better not pass out on me,” she chuckled lightly. I could only smile weakly in reply. “Come on, I'll start that buffet for you two.”

I pushed away my now empty plate with a sigh as I leaned back on my chair. Patting my now stuffed belly, I smiled to myself. “What are you doing ?” Abby gave me a weird look. “Playing with my belly,” I grinned satisfied. “You are so weird,” she shook her head at me taking the last bite of her food. “Yes, yes I am,” I chuckled stretching out.

“Are you two done ? Or do you want me to make more ?” Mom smiled at the two of us as she took a sip of her coffee. At the meer sound of more food I my mouth watered, but my stomach bloated up in protest telling me that I've reached my limit a little while ago. “No thanks, I'm good and full,” I gave my stomach another satisfied pat. “Me too,” Abby patted my stomach too making me grunt.

Letting out a low and lazy wail I weakly swatted her arm away making her and Mom laugh at me. “Alright,” Mom chuckled setting down her coffee, “You two go up stairs and shower then rest.” Turning her attention to the dishes she began to rinse then place them into the nearby dish washer.

“Yeah, come on, Scar. The sooner we rest, the sooner we get to go to the beach !” Abby excited declared jumping to her feet. I groaned in protest as she tried to tug on my arm to get me to stand up. “What ?” my mom turned to us, eyebrows raised. The tone in her voice seemed a bit serious.

“Uhmm .. we were planning on going to the beach today after a quick nap ?” I looked at her, unsure. Mom looked at the both of us, it looked like she was debating something, opening her mouth a couples times before she finally spoke. “I don't think that that's a good idea, girls,” she looked at us, apologetically.

“Why not ?” I tilted my head at her.

“Well, for one thing: you both nearly passed out on me earlier from a simple demonstration.”

“Simple,” Abby looked at her, “Those trees are huge !” My mom shook her head, chuckling softly to herself.

“Well yeah, but still. From the looks of things, I think that you two need to rest.”

“But we're fine now,” I chimed in.

“Scarlet, Abby,” Mom sighed leaning against the counter toward us, “this is more serious than you think.” Abby and I exchanged a somewhat confused look. “What do you mean ?” I tilted my head to the side a little.

“Girls, do you know what could and would happen if you completely burn yourselves out of adora ?” I looked at my mom, nodding as I tried to understand what she was talking about. “What's 'adora'?” Abby, on the other hand, was as lost as ever. Both me and my mom looked at her, shocked. I shook my head, laughing lightly. My mom couldn't help but to crack a smile as well, “Lemme guess, you haven't been studying. Have you ?”

Abby turned a small shade of pink, “Uhmm … Maybe not as much as I should be..” I couldn't help but to burst out in a giggles, shaking my head. Abby wasn't really the type to study as much as she should.

My mom straightened her posture with a sigh, “Adora is basically a special word for magical energy. It's the magical essence within every witch, wizard, or worlock. Without it we wouldn't be able to do all the magical things we do.” I lolled my head to the side at Abby, watching her take in the new info. She nodded sipping on her orange juice, cheeks still tinted pink. “Do you understand now ?”

“To be honest … I'm a little lost,” she scratched her head with a guilty smile. I shook my head, trying to hide the fact that I still was pretty lost on what my mom was trying to say.

“Girls,” she leaned on the counter towards us again, “this is serious. You need to know when to stop. It's good that you two like to challenge yourselves and get stronger, but you do have a limit.”

“Okay, but doesn't that limit change ? I'm to get stronger and all that ?” I inquired.

“Yes, as you guys continue to train and strengthen your powers you can't completely burn yourselves out.”

“Why not ? I mean the worst that could happen is that we get seriously tired and maybe pass out, right ?”

“No.”

“No ?” Abby and I said in unison exchanging a shocked glance before gawking at my mom again.

“Yes.”

“But what could be worse than ...” I trailed off, realization hitting me. My eyes grew wide, my mom eyed me a serious message.

Abby looked between the both of us, lost again. “What ?”

“Abby, if we use all of our adora,” I dropped my gaze to the empty counter top.

“If you two keep pushing too far and use all of your adora to the point of absolute 0, you both could die.”
