Lead me From the Darkness

Chapter Four

Giovanni’s Market, Boston, MA
4:30 P.M.

Greg stood in an aisle of the small Italian grocery store a few blocks down from his condo. He had never really cooked for himself before. Vicky had done all the work; she had been a great cook. He looked up at the shelf of boxes of different noodles unsure of which to take. As he was going back and forth between two boxes he noticed someone standing near him. He looked over and felt a rush of surprise when he saw the same girl he’d seen at practice yesterday and that morning. Her wide bright blue eyes were also looking up and down the shelves. She didn’t seem to notice him as he continued to watch her. She grabbed a few boxes and a can of tomato sauce and then turned back down the aisle and left. She had captivated his attention, even if she was a new fan that had just started to come to their practices he wanted to know who she was. She had captivated his attention.

Donna got home holding a bag of groceries for dinner. Henry stood in the living room and said

“You can put those away you’re not making dinner tonight.”

“Why not?” she asked

“Because I was invited to a formal dinner at Claude Julien’s, the whole team will be there. It’s something they do at the start of the season. It’s at 5:30 so start getting ready.” Donna felt grateful for not having to cook and went into the kitchen to put away the food she’d bought for tomorrow night. She went into the bedroom to see Henry buttoning up a blue dress shirt. He watched her walk over to the closet and said

“Pick out a long dress,” she went through some of her dresses and pulled out her favorite, a floor-length light blue mermaid dress. It was simple but elegant with silver jewels lining underneath her chest and on the line where the fabric flowed out at her knees. She came out of the bathroom and Henry turned to see her. He looked her up and down and said with an edge of arrogance

“You look well enough,” He left the room and she fixed up her makeup, and put on some jewelry. For shoes she picked out a pair of silver jeweled heels that matched and a small silver clutch. She found Henry in the kitchen and they left for Claude Julien’s house. He lived in Lexington and it didn’t take long to get there. Still tense from the fight from the night before they didn’t talk to each other as they drove.

Donna was a little nervous about meeting Henry’s teammates. She wasn’t good around new people. As they pulled into the driveway she was amazed at the size of the house. There were other cars pulled into the driveway. They parked behind another car and got out. Donna could hear her heels clicking loudly on the concrete as she walked closer to the house. Henry rang the door bell and Claude Julien answered the door smiling, his wife Karen behind him.

“Hey Henry,” said Claude happily. Henry smiled back and walked in with Donna behind him. Karen smiled at her and said

“You must be Henry’s girlfriend,” Donna smiled and nodded.

“I’m Donna,”

“Welcome to our home,” said Karen. Donna went to follow Henry obediently but Karen took her hand and said

“I’ll show you around my house, you must meet my daughter.” Feeling even more nervous and out of place Donna followed Karen into a wide open ballroom. There was a long table in the center of the big room which was set for dinner. It was a grand room with gold tile, matching wallpaper, and diamond chandeliers that hung from the ceiling. He was so memorized by the beauty of the place that she almost didn’t hear Karen say

“Donna I want you to meet my daughter Raina Julien, she’s Milan Lucic’s wife.” Donna saw a pretty brunette girl smiling at her. She was in a sparkling light green dress that brought out her light brown eyes. She was holding a baby in a cute pink suit. The baby was resting against her shoulder looking half asleep.

“Hi, I’m Raina,” she said putting her hand forward to shake. Donna smiled back and gently shoke her hand.

“I’m Donna,” she said.

“Who are you here with?” asked Raina as she gently moved the baby further up onto her.

“I’m Henry’s girlfriend,” she said. Raina nodded and said

“Welcome to the team,” Karen walked off to greet more guests leaving Donna and Raina alone. “What team was Henry on before this?” asked Raina.

“Providence,” said Donna. Donna saw Milan Lucic walking up behind his wife holding another infant in his arms. Unlike the baby in Raina’s arms the one he was holding was in a blue suit and was fussing. He seemed to be trying to get out of his fathers grip as he waved his little arms and legs around. Raina smiled at her husband and said

“Milan this is Donna, Henry’s girlfriend.” Milan smiled at her and said

“I’m Milan,” Donna smiled and said

“Nice to meet you, are these you’re babies?” The infant in Milan’s arms gave out an unhappy cry and Milan looked down at him and said

“Yes they are,” Donna smiled and said

“They’re adorable,”

“This is Willow,” said Raina looking at the baby in her arms. “And that is Luca,” she said looking over at the wriggling baby in Milan’s arms. He let out another unhappy cry and Milan said

“I think he needs to be changed, I’ll be back.” He turned around and headed back out of the ballroom.

“Where’s Henry?” asked Raina looking around.

“I don’t know,” said Donna. “He went off with Claude somewhere.” Donna saw another brunette woman in a long pink dress walking up to them. Raina smiled and said

“Hey Jasmiina,” The woman smiled and Raina said “Jasmiina this is Donna, she’s the new guy’s girlfriend.” Jasmiina smiled at her and said

“Hi I’m Jasmiina; I’m Tuukka Rask’s wife.”

“I’m Donna,” she said, not believing how smoothly thing were going so far. Raina turned to her friend and said

“How are you doing so far?”

“It’s going really well,” said Jasmiina placing a hand on her stomach. “I’m two months along now.” Donna realized she was pregnant seeing the small baby bump she had her hand on. Out of impulse Donna said

“Congratulations,”

“Thanks,” said Jasmiina. Suddenly Donna felt a tight grip on her wrist and she jumped in fear. She turned around to see Henry towering over her. She felt a streak of fear and he said

“Come along Donna, I want you to meet some more of my teammates,” In a quieter voice so neither Raina nor Jasmiina could hear he said “Rather than hanging out with the women.” He pulled on her arms and Donna forced a smile at Raina and said

“It was nice meeting you two, I’ll see you later.” The girls smiled back at her but Donna could see the concerned looks on their faces.

“Don’t stay hidden,” Henry snarled. “I want to know where you are at all times.” Donna didn’t answer him but continued to let him drag her across the room over to a group of men. She could hear them laughing and talking and felt like an object Henry was just showing off.

Greg stood in a circle of his teammates, drinking and laughing. He loved the formal parties Claude put together at the beginning of the season. He saw Henry reappear in their group and he said

“Guys I’d like you to meet my girlfriend,” He moved aside so she could be seen by the group. Greg felt shocked to see the blue eyed girl that had captured his attention so intensely for the past two days. She smiled sweetly up at them and then caught his gaze. Her light blue eyes stared into his dark blue ones.

“I’m Donna,” she said in a very quiet voice.

I've been so busy with the beginning of school I haven't posted in awhile. I'm going to try and get at least one out every week. I've also been thinking about adding a fourth addition to my Bruins series before writing the final story that brings them all together. I was thinking about doing a Marc Savard story. What do you guys think? What are your opinions?
