A Kiss Before She Goes

Chapter 4

Frank stood by the stairs with his mouth wide open. I laughed at how cute he was. I sat on the couch and pat the space next to me to tell him to sit down. He snapped out of his daze and gave me a smile as he sat down. I felt chills going up my arms. Why does he make me do that every time he smiles?

“So what do you want to watch?” I asked him flipping through channels.

He shrugged, “I don’t care really.” After a moment of silence, he spoke again, “Why don’t you tell me about yourself instead?”

“Uhh ok.” I laughed turning off the TV. “Like what?”

“Tell me about where you grew up and go from there.”

“Not much to say.” I laughed.

“Tell me anyway.” He said smiling ear to ear. He turned his body slightly to give me his full attention. I cleared my throat, feeling nervous.

“Well I was born in San Francisco, California. I lived there until I was fourteen. My parents had money problems and had to send me to Orem, Utah with my grandparents.” I looked at him to see if I should go on.

He smiled at me and asked, “Did you like Utah?”

“Yes, I loved it. It was very different from living in the city, including the people. I made some lifelong friends there.” I smiled while trailing off into my memories. I miss my friends.

“Well do you like it here so far?”

“Yes it’s really nice. I mean I haven’t made any friends yet so I’ll see.” He looked at me with a fake hurt face.

I laughed, “What?”

“I know we just met but can’t we be friends?” He said with a puppy face. I laughed and shook my head.

“You’re so cute.” I blushed madly when I realized what I had just said to him. He blushed slightly too before turning his head and laughed.

He rubbed the back of his head and said, “Thanks. You’re cute too.”

My cheeks burned more than ever before in my life. I instantly looked down at my hands. I mumbled thanks not wanting to look at him. “And we can be friends.”

I still didn’t look at him but I knew he was smiling. “That’s good.” He laughed, “So tell me what you like to do?”

I finally looked at him and said, “I like to sing and dance. I know I don’t look like it but I’ve always liked it when I was little. It’s been a long life dream for me to be the lead singer in a band and be a dance teacher.”

“Really? That’s awesome! I’m actually in a band.” He said.

“What! What do you play?” I asked really curious now. Please don’t say bass.

“Guitar.” He said smiling. Phew.

“That’s awesome. You should play me something sometime.”

He smiled at me, “Yeah I defiantly will.” His eyes landed on my piano. “You play the piano?”

I looked at him and smiled, “Yeah since I was like eight years old. My dad taught me.”

“Play me something!” He said with a big smile.

“I don’t know, I haven’t played in a while…” I said feeling nervous.

“Oh come on, I bet you’re still good and I won’t laugh at you if you mess up.” I looked at him for a while debating if I should or not. Last time I played a song for someone was with him. I shook him out of my head and looked at the piano. I looked back at Frank and almost died of cuteness overload. He was giving me the cutest pouty face I’d ever seen and looked like he was about to cry.

I was laughing so hard. “Ok stop! I can’t take it anymore! That face is too cute. I’ll play you a song.”

“Yes! I’ll use this as my secret weapon from now on.” He said with an evil laugh. I gave him a glare and got up to go to the piano. Frank stayed on the couch resting his arms and head on the back of the couch while still looking at me. I sat there for a while deciding what to play. My fingers hovered over the keys and when I finally picked a song they slowly hit the keys.

‘It's a little bit funny, this feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can easily hide
I don't have much money
but boy if I did, I'd buy a big house where we both could live

So excuse me forgetting but these things I do
see I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue
anyway the thing is; what I really mean
yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen

And you can tell everybody, this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that is done
I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind
that I put down in words, how wonderful life is now you’re in the world

If I was a sculptor but then again no
or girl who makes potions in a traveling show
I know it's not much but it's the best I can do
My gift is my song and this one's for you

And you can tell everybody, this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that is done
I hope you don’t mind, I hope you don’t mind
that I put down in words
how wonderful life is now you’re in the world’

I removed my hand from the keys and looked at Frank. He had his mouth wide open again. I laughed softly and waited for him to say something. After a moment he sat up straight and just shook his head slowly. Did he not like it?

“That… was amazing.” I felt happy. “You play with such passion and your voice… wow!”

I laughed, “Thank you Frank. Mean’s a lot.”

“You have to meet my friend Gerard! He’s the lead singer in our band and I know he’ll love you!” He said very excited.

“Yeah I would love to.” I said sitting back on the couch.

“Let’s go now! He doesn’t live that far.” He said holding my hand out of excitement. My body tensed up. I swallowed hard trying to talk. A silent laugh escaped my mouth and I nodded my head in agreement. He smiled happily and stood up letting go of my hand. I felt sad for a moment.

“Let me just tell my parent’s and we’ll go.” I said leading the way upstairs.
