"One of the Guys"

I must be dreaming

I was lying if I said I wasn’t nervous about the wedding today. I’ve got this feeling running through me like I’ve never gotten before, I can’t pin point what it is but I don’t like it one bit. How the hell did John O’Callaghan make me nervous? He’s just one of those sleazy guys who have one night stands with sluts that he finds on the streets; well in my opinion at least.

--

Since I got dressed early, I decided to watch How I Met Your Mother. Then I got a text from John saying he was here. I carefully walked down stairs trying not to trip and make a fool of myself. There sat on the couch like a sack of potato’s were Kennedy and Pat; while John stood at the door way. Once I successfully made it down the stairs, everyone turned and looked at me as if they’d seen a ghost.

“Damn Annie you look smoking!” Pat said.

“Why thank you Pat.” I answered and gave him a cheeky smile.

Kennedy was speechless and so was John, it took my Dad to take them out of there daze. My dad walked into the living room and plopped down on the recliner.

“You look dazzling sweetheart, just like your mother. And boys, close your mouths before you start catching flies” He said flipping through his newspaper.

I chuckled, “Thanks daddy, I think John and I are going to leave now, right John?”

“Uh yeah, and you look beautiful Annie.” He said holding the door open for me. I couldn’t help but blush at his statement.

Before John could close the door Pat yelled, “Use protection!” Kennedy also pitched in, “NO! Pat, do not encourage them! John, don’t you fucking dare fuck my sister or I’ll cut your

—“Kennedy didn’t finish before slamming the door shut.

“Oh my gosh, please excuse my dumbass of a brother.” I said apologetically.

“No it’s cool.” He gave me a smile and started driving.

--

Moments later we arrived at John’s house, I didn’t realize how close he lived; well maybe because I’ve never been there. We got out of the car and headed towards the house.

“Mom, I’m home!” John hollered.

“In the kitchen honey.” Mrs. O’Callaghan said.

John put his hands around my waist and led me to the kitchen where she frazzled, trying to prepare for the wedding.

“John I need you to— oh, who do we have here?”

“Umm mom, meet my girlfriend Annie; Annie this is my mom Jenny.” John introduced

“It’s nice to meet you sweetie, you look gorgeous in this dress.” Mrs. O’Callaghan complimented.

“Thank you Mrs. O’Callaghan.” I blushed slightly

“No, please call me Jenny. Jay, Ross, Shane come down here; John has someone for you guys to meet.” Jenny called.

Moments later 2 boys raced down the stairs and into the kitchen, while one who I assume to be Mr. O’Callaghan walked in from his office.

“Boys, this is Annie; John’s girlfriend.” I gave them a small wave.

“Damn John, she’s smokin’ hot!” Shane said with much enthusiasm. I couldn’t help but blush again.

“Yeah she’s hot, do you have a sister?” Ross asked while checking me out.

“Shane, Ross where are you manners?” Mr. O’Callaghan scolded, “It’s a pleasure to meet you Annie, and please excuse these whack jobs here.” He smiled and walked away.

“So do you have a sister?” Ross asked again

“Well um, Kennedy’s the closest thing I’ve got to a sister; you could give him a shot?” I couldn’t help but grin by the looks on their faces.

John finally decided to speak up, “Okay if you guys are done checking out my girlfriend we’ll be leaving to my room.” He started nudging me towards the stairs.

We walked up to John’s room and I was taken back for a second. It wasn’t dirty at all; actually to be honest it was cleaner than my room. I guess John saw the look on my face because he
chuckled and said, “My mom likes to clean up my room when I’m not home, that’s why it’s so clean if you were wondering.”

I took a seat on the neatly made bed while John went through his closet for a suit.

“I’ll be right back” he said before heading down the hall. While waiting I turn and look on his desk seeing a picture frame I picked it up and was this toddler about 4 years old sitting on John’s lap; he had the biggest smile on his face.

“She’s my little cousin, and I love her to death.” John said standing in front of the mirror.

“What her name?” I questioned.

“Grace, but I call her Gracie.”

“She’s adorable, will she be at the wedding today?” I asked before setting the picture back down on his desk.

“Yes, actually she’ll be the flower girl; so how do I look?” He stood there straightening his suit.

“Well, you look very handsome tonight.” I gave him a small smile. I saw him blush a little, it was cute.

“Thank you very much; you know this doesn’t happen naturally right?” He said sarcastically

“Hah, yeah I can tell, when are we leaving?”

“Umm, right about now.” He said before exiting his room with me following behind.

“Hey mom we’re leaving see you at the church.” He said and gave his mom a kiss on the cheek.

“Bye sweetie and it was nice meeting you Annie.” Jenny was a very nice person.

--
We arrived momentarily, John grabbed my hand and we entered hand in hand. The church was beautiful it looked like a fairytale wedding, pink and white roses scattered around on the white carpet leading to the spot where the bride and groom would be pronounced husband and wife.

John’s family started coming up to us wondering who I was, it was a bit overwhelming at first but I got use to making small talks with his family members. John let me into this room where I guess was where the bride was getting ready; he was going to introduce me to her.

“Okay Annie this is my cousin Daisy Mae, Daisy Mae this is my girlfriend Annie, also known as Kennedy Brocks younger sister.”

She pulled me into a tight hug; I definitely did not see that coming.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, how come we’re never met before; why hasn’t John mentioned you?” She asked.

I gave her a puzzled look not knowing what to say, thank goodness John jumped in to answer.

“We just started dating a couple weeks ago.” John quickly said.

“Oh okay, I’ve got to finish getting ready; see you guys later.”

“It was nice meeting you Daisy Mae, and might I add your dress looks amazing!” I said.

Thank you so much, it took me months to find the right one.” She said before walking away.

“Wow, she’s so nice and pretty; how the hell is she related to you?” I asked and gave him a
playful slap on the chest.

“Hurtful! For your information the looks run in the family and obviously she got it from me so shut up.” John said before walking away.

“Okay, okay I’m sorry; you’re right the looks do run in the family, are you happy now?” I said while pouting.

“Awe, I forgive you. Who can stay mad at that cute face?” He gave me a smirk and let me towards some friends.

“Boys, I’d like you to meet my girlfriend Annie. This is Austin Gibbs, Kyle Burns, Stephen and John Gomez.”

“Umm hi” I said awkwardly cause all the guys were giving me a weird look.

“Whoa dude, she’s mighty fine.” Austin said, I could tell he was getting a little tipsy already.

“Bro, I’d totally tap that!” Kyle added.

“Damn girl, what are you doing with a guy like John?” Stephen asked.

“Okay guys, stop looking at my girlfriend like she’s a piece of meat and Stephen shut the fuck up.

By now I was flush red from all the compliments.
After talking to the guys for a while the ceremony began. The brides maids walked down the aisle linked armed with the groom’s men which I thought was so cute. Once they were down there came Daisy Mae strutting down the aisle with her dad in her beautiful gown; she looked phenomenal. The couple recited their vows, I couldn’t keep the tears in any longer; it was just so lovely. Finally they were pronounced husband and wife. Everyone left the church and walked across the street to party at the reception dinner.

--

Half way through the dinner people were going up to the dance floor to break out there dance moves. John and I were sitting by the bar his hands wrapped around my waist and my hand on his lap. I couldn’t believe how well we were faking this, sometimes I would forget that’s its fake nothing more than friends; I just got so wrapped up in the moment.

The music started to slow down and John whisperd in my ear, “May I have this dance?”
I giggled and nodded, we started slow dancing to “fall for you” By Secondhand Serenade. John’s hands were wrapped around my waist and my hands drooping around his neck that might have been the best 3:01 of my life. I headed back to our table while John went to the restroom. While being left only watching the newlyweds have their first dance some guy came up to me.

“Hey pretty lady, what’s a girl like you sitting her alone; can I get you a drink?” He slurred

“Um, no thank you,” I said slowly backing away.

“Oh come on, one drink won’t hurt” with that he grabbed my wrist and started to pull me.

“What the fuck let go of me, I don’t even know you!” I spat in his face.

“Whoa there, someone’s got a potty mouth. And my names James, see now you know who I am now lets go.” He tried tugging on my wrist again but I wouldn’t budge.

“Get the hell away from me you creep!” I screamed in his face but not loud enough for anyone to notice us. Before I knew it John came in and knocked the guy out.

“Holy shit!” He’d scared the shit out of me, now there’s this guy lying on the ground unconscious.

“Annie are you okay?!?” he asked worriedly.

“Yeah I’m fine thank you, but you’re not okay; your hand is bleeding.” I said holding onto his hand.

“It was worth it though, fucking creep deserved to get hit.”

“John just calm down I’m okay, let’s get your hand cleaned off.” I said while trying to lead him towards the restrooms.

I dabbed his hand softly with a wet cloth while he sat on the counter with his head against the wall.
“John, I think we should go to the hospital; your hand won’t stop bleeding!” I exclaimed a little bit frightened.

“No I’m o—“

“No, you’re not okay; now give me your keys we’re going to the hospital!” I used a stern voice causing him to notice that, that was the end of the conversation.

--

John ended up getting a few stiches but he was okay though. I drove us back to my house because he obviously couldn’t drive and he didn’t want to face his parents. I parked the car in the drive way seeing Pat was still at our house. I grabbed John’s uninjured hand and lead him inside. My dad was watching the football game with Kennedy and Pat while my mom was cleaning.

“Whoa man what happened to your hand?” Kennedy asked a little confused.

John didn’t reply so I did, “Um, long story Kenny; I’ll tell you guys tomorrow when the rest of the guys are here.

“I’m going to head to bed now, is it alright if John stayed the night dad?”

“Yeah sure sweetie, but where is he going to sleep? Pat’s here and he’s going to crash in Kennedy’s room and the couch is where I’m sleeping cause your mother and I got into a little argument tonight.” He dad said while trying to think of a sleeping an arrangement for John.

“It’s okay, John can sleep in my room.” Gave him a reassuring smile before walking up the stairs, with John following. John plopped onto my bed while I went to Kennedy’s room to grab John some clothes. I threw the shorts and t-shirt at him and told him to change in my bathroom. He walked out and didn’t look so happy.

“John, are you okay? You haven’t said anything since we left the hospital and you’re facial expression hasn’t changed.” I asked with concern, John didn’t answer.

“Please tell me what's wrong I’m worried about you.” I pleaded.

Finally he spoke you, “What happened when I went to use the restroom?” he said softly.

“Well, when you left I was sitting at the table watching people dance; then that guy came up and asked if he could buy my drink. I denied and thought he’d leave me alone but he didn’t do so. He’d kept on nagging me to go with him to the bar but I didn’t budge, finally he grabbed my wrist and started to pull me away. I fought as much as I could but he was way bigger than me, than you came in and punched him; if you hadn’t come in I don’t know what would have happened.” There I looked into John’s eyes, he almost looked hurt.

“I’m sorry Annie, I shouldn’t had left you there alone or this would have never happened.” He said apologetically.

“Hey, it’s not your fault, it’s not like I could of went into the bathroom with you. I think I’m old enough not to be watched over like a five year old.”

“I guess you’re right, can we get to sleep now, and it’s been a long day.” He asked before yawning.

“Sure thing, you can sleep on the bed with me. It’s big enough for the both of us.” I gave him a smile.

“Are you sure, because I can sleep on the ground if that makes you uncomfortable?” He said unsure of what to do.

“Yeah I’m sure; I’m not going to let you sleep on the wood floors that would hurt like a bitch! And what kind of girlfriend would I be if you slept on the ground, plus your mom would kill me.” I gave him a wink before grabbing my pj’s and headed to the bathroom.

When I came back John was already under the covers fast asleep. I slip under the covers and lay next to him. This has been a long day, pretending to be John’s girlfriend is a hell lot of work. Slowly I drifted off to sleep…next to John O’Callaghan.
