I'll Be There

Live

After giving up my search behind every pillow in the house and admitting James was gone I grabbed some cereal. Dj was on the couch with a guitar, and Nikki was eating beside me, I kept yawning, making my eyes water, which in turn made it that much harder not to cry. I didn’t even know when my mother’s funeral would be, or where. What kind of a daughter am I?
Dj watched her carefully from the edge of his vision. He could tell that she was on the verge of a breakdown, but she was doing her best to be strong. He also kept looking at Nikki. The bassist was still half asleep, so he got away with glancing at him from time to time without being questioned. He also checked his phone periodically. He had to repay James for what he was doing for him. He owed Raven too, he knew that James, for some reason that he still didn’t know, made her happy. Having him leave so early without saying goodbye was a bit cruel, but it had to be done or she would question him. Dj had to stop himself from an outburst as he read his next message. No sooner than 2 days. Dammit. He couldn’t keep Nikki here for another two days. He reluctantly replied with ‘okay’ and left it at that. It didn’t matter that much anyway. It was just a hunch, a really stupid, 1-in-a-billion hunch, but it would satisfy his curiosity and if he was really lucky it would make Raven happy. In the meantime he was thinking of ways to keep her mind busy. Then he thought of something. He had reached a shit-ton of followers on the new Google+ and promised a live chat once he got there. Today would be the perfect time to do it. He still didn’t want the world knowing about her of course, but she could still have fun behind the scenes.
The day went by pretty much uneventful. I was beginning to wonder if he even cared about me anymore when he suggested the weirdest thing, some online live chat with his fans. He explained how it worked and that I could help off-camera, which I found unappealing but still better than nothing, so I agreed. He posted it on his twitter and whatever other accounts he had and began to set up his webcam, which he was rusty at using. Once we finally figured out how to turn it on we decided to test it without video yet. Dj held his hand over the lens and went live as I messed with settings on the computer to try and make the echo go away. I watched as the comments began to flow endlessly, and I couldn’t even keep track of them. He began to talk, explaining that it was just a test and he’d be right back. I giggled under my breath and whispered “Somebody just said I love you” He had seen it too, and he answered to her nickname with “I love you too” Kari pulled up a chair just out of shot and I sat next to her so I could see the screen. He was about to go on air again when I said “Wait, I have an idea.”
I went over to the ugly skull-doll creature he had sitting against the wall and stuck it in his chair. He laughed and gave me the thumbs up, then went live. Once he figured that they didn’t buy Dj suddenly turning into an ugly skull-woman he came into shot behind her. “What’s up!” he said with a smile. “How are you guys?” I watched the endless flow of comments. “This is my new girlfriend.” He smiled, tapping the creature. He glanced over at me with a laugh then took the stupid doll back where I had gotten it from. I made a face as he said “What’s up fuckers!” and the echo was still there. The fans said it wasn’t too noticeable on their end though, so I guess I would deal with it. Suddenly he grabbed Kari and hauled her into the shot. “Say hi to Kari” he told everyone. I raised an eyebrow, sorry for my sister, and glad that he wouldn’t be showing me off to thousands of people. I was almost jealous though, I kind of wanted to be shown off. Oh well, he would do it when he felt it was right to. Kari pulled herself back into her chair next to me and I saw Dj glance over again before trying to think of what else to say. I laughed when he called his fans fuckers affectionately again. Thankfully I was smart enough to stay quiet about it. “Come back to..Chile” he said Chile funny, like ‘Chilay’. He mentioned the tour with Guns and glanced over at me and Kari, “May” we whispered. He said May and kept talking. “No no no, I said Moscow” I put my hand over my mouth and looked at the floor. These people were so weird. Poor Dj. I tried not to giggle again. He laughed himself and looked over at us. I saw Kari trying not to laugh as well.
He asked them what Sixx: A.M. stood for and they all got it right, so he thought of a harder question, smiling at us before he asked it. “What time did I stop drinking last night?” Kari laughed. We knew the answer to that, he didn’t go to bed until 3. “6am!” I joked. “Wrong!” Dj yelled, watching the comments. “I stopped drinking this morning, you all fuckin lost” After that he talked about the Golden Gods Awards and started naming off the bands, forgetting one. I knew it of course, but didn’t want to say it too loud. I kept mouthing it as he looked at the screen and back to Kari for an answer. “Black Veil Brides” I kept whispering. Finally he read the comments and figured out it was them. I face-palmed. A few minutes later Kari asked him what was on his iPod. I smiled. I already knew of course. “Neil Diamond, tons of orchestra music…” he went through his phone. “AND” he said with a smile, “Believe it or not…” he played a song and put it to the camera with a quick glance at me. I laughed as soon as I heard it. Me and Kari laughed as he bobbed his head like a dork and smiled. “Dear Chasey Lain, I wrote to explain…” the song started, and I sang along to it. Dj was watching and laughed before shutting it off. “And I have a little Bloodhound Gang” he joked.
Dj kept up the chat for a good hour, covering anything from bands to his clothing line to his personal life. He always kept glancing at her to see if she was okay, and she seemed to be enjoying herself. Several random things happened, including a call from some blocked number in Florida, even somebody asking him what kind of cigarettes he smoked. Raven really got a laugh out of that one, and he somehow figured Nikki was involved. He finally ended the chat and looked to the girls. Raven smiled at him. “That was fun” she said, “even though I wasn’t involved.” Then she smirked at Kari, who he had dragged into the shot. His sister glared jokingly back. He just had to keep her occupied tomorrow. After that he should know the answer to the question that was secretly plaguing them all, even if they didn’t realize it. What could he do to keep her busy tomorrow? He suddenly got a great idea and began texting as the girls went to Kari’s room for who knows what. Hopefully tomorrow would keep her mind occupied. He grabbed a can of soda and went to his room. Sometime in the middle of the night he felt the familiar shape of Raven climb in bed next to him, curling up under the covers.
