Twenty Eight
I cursed my best friend as I struggled with the sofa, he went to the bathroom five minutes ago leaving me with the heavy lifting. Everyone else was either outside at the van or still asleep as it was a Sunday morning. I cried out loud as I dropped our new brown sofa on to my foot, causing me to shout out profanities. Not a good first impression for the neighbours, I was pretty sure they heard me.
“What have you broken?” Garrett asked rushing back into the room.
“My foot,” I replied sitting on the plastic on the sofa.
“How did you do that silly?” He asked walking over. I took off my shoe and sock inspecting the damage., the pain was making me feel sick.
“I was moving the sofa,” I replied letting Garrett massage my toes, I don’t think anything was broken but it was very sore, I was sure to have problems walking for the rest of the day.
“That was silly of you, want some water?”
“Good luck finding the glasses, I only tried to move it because you disappeared,” I explained shooting him a bit of an evil look. My foot was bright red and my toes were curling over again so Garrett massaged them again.
“Get a room guys,” Trey moaned walking into the room with Tim they were carrying a box each.
“Yeah keep your weird fetish behind closed doors,” Tim commented dropping the box to the floor, I hoped to God nothing fragile was in there. I looked over at Garrett who rolled his eyes and sighed.
“She hurt her foot,” Garrett replied matter of factly.
“Faker!” Trey pointed at me giving me a fake look causing me to laugh, he was the big brother I never had.
“I helped as much as I could with the rest of the moving, I mainly sat on a chair in the kitchen putting
everything away in cupboards. I was also shouting orders to the boys in the other room, everyone else joined randomly when they awoke. It was obvious John had a late night, his eyes were red and he kept yawning every few seconds.
“What were you doing last night?” I asked as John carried the toaster and set it next to me.
“Just writing, I felt inspired,” he replied sending me a smile which I returned. He was such a creative being it was a privilege to listen to his ideas.
“Well good, next album?” I asked unwrapping the newspaper from Garrett’s star wars mug.
“Who knows? Hey Eva, we’re all proud of you. You don’t have to worry about Garrett he’ll take good care of you.” With that he left the room leaving me confused, was I worried or scared about Garrett?
It didn’t take me long to realise I was. Scared about how I felt for him anyhow.
“Do I even want to know?” I asked walking into the living room and seeing not one but two kegs by the front door.
“They came just now, present from John and Tim from tonight according to the message, so I guess we’re having a party.” Garrett and I had been roommates for three days and we had only just got everything in its rightful place.
“But I have work until six, they could have at least given us notice,” I complained slipping on some plain black ballet pumps which were perfect in the comfort department.
“Apparently it starts at eight but Tim is getting the alcohol, cups and shit and him and John are coming over at seven o clock to set up. It’s fine by me I get to be lazy, I haven’t hugged you today.” Garrett wasted no time in pulling me into his embrace I contently sighed feeling at home.
“They better be doing all the work as this is their idea, I expect them to clean up afterwards too,” I scorned wondering if Penny would come as such short notice. I walked to work since it wasn’t too far now and I felt bad for Garret driving me around all the time. The walk was quite short and I got a little bit of exercise out of it and Garrett wouldn’t need t get up, a winning situation all round.
“No lover boy today?” I wasn’t even in the office for two seconds but Penny had already started.
“I walk now my apartment is only round the block.” I was going to sieze the moment to ask her to come, I really wanted her to meet everyone.
“I’ll have to come and see it,” she gushed as I handed her assignments for the day which I had sorted out the day before.
“Do you want to come over tonight? We’re having a letter get together.” I explained hoping she would say yes.
“Amazing I’d love to, want me to bring anything?”
“A bottle if you don’t drink beer, I found two kegs by the front door this morning.”
“Garrett a bit of a party animal?” She asked suggestively wiggling her eyebrows.
“Not at all, he’ll drink but he much prefers quiet drinks, it’s our friends who are pushing the whole party thing I think you’ll like them.”
“Any of them single?” She asked with a serious face, I laughed but was interrupted before I could respond properly.
“Girls I don’t pay you to chat.” Brian stood arms folded; we both apologised and got on with our day.
