Eyes of a Soldier

In Times of War

She felt disconcerting as the many people at the funeral came up to offer their condolences on her loss. At the same time that she felt uneasy and in a state of such utter misery, she also felt proud. Not proud of the fact she had just lost the love of her life, but proud of the memory he was leaving behind. He died a hero and as the man whose life he has saved came rolling up in a wheel chair, she knew her husband would be remembered as such an honorable person. The battle took place in a remote valley deep in enemy territory in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan. He ran a gauntlet of fire not once but five times with insurgents shooting down on him from three sides. All because he knew his fellow Marines, who had just been shot, were going to lose their lives if he didn’t sacrifice his own. This now handicapped man had tears in his eyes as he told how great her husband was and apologized for her and her daughter’s loss.
