Unravelled

Chapter 5

Five minutes later we were shutting the door behind us and we were on our way. I drove us to Johnny’s building and we made our way up to his apartment so I could drop off my stuff and he could change. As he was putting on his workout clothes I couldn’t help but wander around the apartment again.

“What’re you doing?” Johnny asked, coming up behind me.

“This view is just insane. It takes my breath away.”

“I know, eh? Definitely my favourite part of the apartment. It’s honestly the main reason why I bought it,” he said, taking my hand. “Come on.”

We made our way down to the gym and got to work. Two hours later we both collapsed on the couch in Johnny’s living room.

“That felt good,” I said, finally.

“I’m not even gonna lie. That was impressive. I’ve never seen a girl work out that hard before.”
I narrowed my eyes at him. “I haven’t been to the gym since moving here. I love pushing myself. I missed it. And you’re clearly hanging out with the wrong girls.”

“Clearly.”

“I need a shower,” I leaned over and gave Johnny a quick peck. “Alone. Then can we go for lunch? I’m starving.”

“Fine,” he replied, pouting. “But when we get back you’re showing me those dresses.”

“Deal,” I said, pulling myself up off the couch. An hour later we were walking down the street to Johnny’s favourite little diner. We walked in and he headed straight to a corner table. Not a minute later waitress made her way over to us.

“Johnny,” she said, giving him a slight nod. “The usual?”

“Yes, please, Sherri. She’ll have the same,” he said, pointing at me.

“Alright. It’ll be a few minutes. I’ll get you guys some coffee.”

“You come here that often?”

“I love it here,” he said, slightly blushing. “I come here at least once a week. Sherri’s my favourite. She reminds me of my mom in ways. All the employees here are like a little family. I like that.”

I slowly started shaking my head, fighting a smile. Sherri came back over and laid two cups of coffee in front of us. “Food will be a minute,” she said, smiling.

We ate (an incredible omelette) slowly and eventually made our way back to the apartment, taking the long way while Johnny pointed out some of his favourite things. One we arrived back at the apartment I took his hand and led him into his room. “Now, about these dresses…”

“Fuck the dresses. Go naked,” he whispered as he pulled me down on the bed. We made out for a long while before I finally broke it off asking, “What time do we need to be ready?”

“We need to leave here at 6,” he replied, trying to pull me down again.

“Johnny, stop. It’s after 3 already! I need to get ready!”

He laid down on the bed frowning. “You have insane timing, I have to admit.”

I smiled down at him. “Want to actually help me pick out a dress? I’m really nervous you know. I want to look nice. What are you wearing?” I climbed off of him and he stood up and went over to the closet. He opened it up and pulled out one of the nicest suits I had ever seen. “Holy fuck, Johnny! I don’t have anything that fancy! Oh my God. I’m going to look ridiculous. People are actually going to make fun of me. Oh man,” I sank down into the bed and covered my face with my hands.

“Brynn,” he said softly, sitting down next to me. “It’s fine. Show me the dresses. You’ll look incredible no matter what you wear.” I tried on all three dresses and it was surprisingly innocent. We decided on which one was the nicest and I set to work getting my hair and make-up done to perfection. Soon enough we were on our way out the door. The whole night was a blur – pictures being taken all around, everyone wanting to interview Johnny and know who I was, me standing awkwardly by watching Johnny in his element. The actual event was rather boring with a lot of speeches. I really wanted to be drunk but I stuck to water, knowing I could get pretty rowdy and that I was a reflection on Johnny that night – I had to behave.

We finally walked back in through the door of his apartment around midnight. “That was insane,” I said as I threw my clutch down on the bed. “You were so good! Answering everyone’s questions like it was no big deal. You were so in your element. That was such a turn on.”

He started to laugh as he pulled off his suit jacket. “You were pretty natural yourself, you know. You looked adorable, answering everything they asked you without hesitating at all. They were impressed. They were probably expecting you to be some dumb bimbo. Most unmarried players pay girls to go with them to this shit and they always run when cameras come into play.”

“I don’t even remember what they asked me,” I replied honestly. “I was so nervous.”

“Well you did an amazing job,” he said, coming over to me and wrapping his arms around my waist.

“Thank you for coming tonight.” He leaned down and gently kissed me.

“Thanks for inviting me,” I said with a smile. “I’m flattered that you wanted me there.”

We slowly started making out and as we laid down on the bed it was clear that tonight was going to be a lot more gentle than any of the past times. We took our time and eventually he collapsed next to me grinning like a fool.

“That was… different?” I said, turning to him.

“That was good, admit it,” he replied with a smirk. I curled up next to him and quickly fell asleep. I woke up to my alarm at 9 the next morning and slowly disentangled myself from Johnny. Before long he opened his eyes. “Early. Where you going?” he said groggily.

“I have to be at the airport in a half hour,” I said as I pulled on my clothes. “Go back to sleep. I’ll see you tomorrow.” I threw the rest of my stuff in my bag, went over and gave him a quick kiss.

“Fly safe,” he responded as he rolled back over.

I made it to Cambridge with no issue, checked into the hotel and actually made it to my meeting on time. The meeting was uneventful and seeing as I was just the face of the company, I was really only there to keep up appearances. I couldn’t help but dread going back to the hotel as I left the building. Tonight would be my first night sleeping alone in a few days and the first time is always the worst.

“BRYNN!” I heard someone call out as I walked out the front doors. I felt the colour drain from my face as I turned around.

“Stefan… What are you doing here?”

“You have your little ‘monthly meeting’ the same day every month, Brynn. I’m not a fucking idiot. Do you mind explaining to me what the hell you’ve been up to?”

“Stefan I really don’t have time for this. I have an early flight tomorrow morning. Good-bye.”

“Don’t fucking walk away from me you bitch. You have explaining to do. Like, why did I wake up this morning to a million e-mails about you? Hm? Pictures and links to interviews of you and fucking JONATHAN TOEWS. My mother called me for fuck sakes, Brynn. MY MOTHER! How do you expect me to explain to my mother why my wife is taking pictures with Jonathan Toews?!”

“Ex-wife,” I spat back at him. “EX-WIFE.”

“Not until the end of this month, Brynn. It isn’t final until then and I could still make your life a living hell. How could you walk away from us so easily? Does he even know?”

“Shut up Stefan. You have no idea what you’re talking about. We are done. We are nothing. Walking away was the hardest thing I’ve ever done but you know it was for the best of everyone. It’s easier this way. Now, good-bye. Have a nice life.”
