Everything to Nothing

What does it actually mean when a relationship becomes not something playful, light and carefree but serious. When does this notion even become established? Do we sit in formal attire and discuss this matter with a lawyer present?

"And to Miss Rove, Mr. Turner would like to request your relation progress into something serious. Sign here and here. Initial there."

Taking the next step. There's another bollocks filled expression. How do we take the next step? Does this mean marriage? Children? Primary school? Birthday parties and baby showers. Family gatherings and house hunting. Prime tv and 8 to 5 jobs. 

I guess the relationship turned serious when he proposed. Even more serious when I said yes and we moved in together. But why did I run? More irrationally, why did I go fly across the country to see him.
