"He jumped to number one on the donor list. If all goes well, he'll get a new liver as soon as today, but we can only hope."

The doctor smiled and she felt relieved. She turned around and walked down the hall where she hoped he would smile ear-to-ear and try to jump out of bed to pull her into a hug, like he used to whenever he was sick and she would come home from work.

He didn't. He lay, weakly, in his bed. His skin was jaundiced and his eyes were hollow. He could barely move and there a bandage around his head where he hit it when he fell.

"Hi," he said, hoarsely.

She smiled and sat down on a chair next to him. He turned his head to look at her and she took his hand in hers.

"You scared me," she whispered.

"I'm sorry," he whispered back.

"Lydia?" James barged into the room, holding bags of pretzels. He stopped when he saw them and she looked up at him wide eyed, shaking her head, but it was too late.
