Lock Down

Chapter 2

I looked around terrified that I was actually going to be living in a prison cell for the next fifteen years unless my lawyer could prove I was innocent. I followed the guard to a cell that I was going to be living in.

The guard stopped at the entrance to the cell allowing me to walk in. I stopped in my tracks and stared at the male who was lying on the bottom bunk.

He looked to be taller than me but then who wasn't? Skinny like me, he's paler than I am. He had black hair that reached his shoulders and was swept across his forehead covering his left eye.

"This is your new cell mate Chance. If I find out you've laid a finger on him we'll move him from this cell leaving you alone again." The guard spoke with a laugh causing the male on the bed to sit up and stare at the guard.

"Yeah yeah whatever" The guard left us alone while I stood there most likely looking out of place. "Names Chance"

"Stephen" Chance nodded while staring at me as I looked around. What did the guard mean? Surely this male wasn't violent he didn't look like the type to make me their bitch.

"Top bunks yours unless you want to swap and don't hesitate to just make yourself at home I don't bite." I smiled as I placed my box of things down on the top bunk before leaning against the wall opposite him.

"Top is fine, what did the guard mean when he said about laying a finger on me?" I asked looking away from him.

"It’s just a personal joke between us since I'm gay. But don't worry I won't touch you." I nodded and looked at him wondering how he could be so open about his sexuality. "If you stick with me no one will touch you."

Seriously I stared at him slightly confused about how no one would touch me if I hung about with him. Was it something to do why he was in here? "How is that?" I asked.

"Majority of the inmates are scared of me." I couldn't help but stare at him right then, how could the inmate be scared of him? He looked just as weak and fragile as I did.

"Why?" I asked out of curiosity.

"Because what I did to get in here." Okay what did he do? I felt so awkward standing here not knowing what this guy did. "Don't worry I'm not going to touch you. You can sit down if you like, I promise I won't bite."

That made me feel slightly better not much but enough for me to suck it up and sit down on the edge of the bed. "How long have you been in here?"

"A few months or something I'm not too sure." I nodded as I tried to piece together everything he was telling me.

"How long did you get?"

"15 years min but hopefully I get out in half the time." Chance looked away from me.

"Bloody hell what did you do?" I blurted out his time finally settling in. He looked up to me his eyes slightly wide.

"You want to know?" He asked.

"I do actually." I wasn't going to tell anyone, Chance seemed genuine whether he was just good at playing people or he was being straight foreword.

"Murder, that's why I'm in here." To say I wasn't shocked would be a lie. Chance didn't look like the sort. "I didn't really kill him before you even ask if I did."

"I didn't think you did. Just looking at you, you don't look like the type." He shook his head smiling softly.

"No I don't have it in me." He chuckled to himself before turning to face me completely.

"So what happened?" I asked him, if he was going to say he didn't really kill him I would need to know what happened.

"I was out with my friend Dakota when her ex boyfriend pulled out a gun on her for splitting up with him. I attempted to get the gun off him but the idiot pulled the trigger as I was about to break his wrist. The police even confirmed my story but I still got sent down." So he was in the same boat as me then, sent down for a crime he didn't commit.

"That's shit man." He shrugged looking down for a brief moment.

"Yeah well, still murder. Why are you in here?" He asked.

"Murder" Chance only nodded his eyes never leaving me.

"Did you kill them?" He asked, I didn't know how to respond to his constant questions. This was a tough subject for me. I closed my eyes hoping to stop the tears that were threatening to spill and taking a deep breath.

"No" I looked right into his eyes when I spoke so he'd see the truth in my eyes I wasn't lying.

"What happened?" He asked, I looked away from him as a single tear broke free making a run for its freedom leaving a trail behind it.

"My friend committed suicide, I found him and they locked me up thinking I killed him." I couldn't help but think about Jared as I sat there talking about how I got in here.

"I'm sorry if it makes you feel better I believe you didn't do it." I turned my gaze back to him forcing a smile.

"Thanks" He nodded and gave me a reassuring smile.

"Don't let anyone in here see you crying, makes you an easy target." I nodded before wiping my eyes. He would obviously know if he's been in here a while.

"Lunch time, line it up." I assumed that was one of the many prison guards altering us that it was in fact lunch time.

"Come on, let’s get something to eat." Chance said as he grabbed my arm and pulled me to my feet. I just smiled and followed him out of our cell. He introduced me to his two friends Jack and Stuart during lunch and filled me in on a few things I'd have to get used to in this place.
