The New Queen

European Champion

Junior European Championships crept up on them all. It would be her first European championships and she didn’t want to miss it.
Unlike the senior competition they had a full program which included the all around. Anna really wanted the title to jump start her career. She wanted to be on the map. Evgeny contradicted her plans and wanted her to lay low.
Injury wise Anna had a quick shoulder surgery that helped with the pain a bit plus medications that didn’t break any rules. She was slowly getting better and was expected to be fine by Europeans in May.
Family wise she had a new little sister, Nikkita born the week she was gone at Pac Rims. Since she didn’t live at home she didn’t really get to see Nikkita. She saw her once when she got home and then again when she got to go home for Surgery. Other then that she was away from her family for two to three weeks at a time before she saw them . If she was competing the weekend she was supposed to see them then it would wait until the next visit.
With five other kids at home her mom didn’t have the time or money to see Anna compete. She mostly watched her on TV. Her father who still lived in South Africa for ninety percent of the year got to take personal days to see Anna when she was traveling for competition like for the Japan Cup in 2011.
It wasn’t an ideal situation for any of them, but Evgeny promised Anna a week break to train at home if she did well at Europeans.

Going to Europeans was exciting, for Anna anyways. All of her teammates from the men’s and women’s team were going to watch her compete.
She had become really close with Viktoria Komova so instead of rooming with Maria she shared a room with Vika.
They had a lot of fun. Anna always acted like she was older since she was better than a lot of the gymnasts her age. They painted each other’s nails and did each other’s hair and OF COURSE they talked about boys.
Anna had a thing for Pavel Pavlov. He used to be with Aliya Mustafina but some big argument broke them up. He was 19 years old so she had absolutely no chance with him.
Viktoria was crushing on Denis Ablyzin but he was dating Ksenia Semenova.
“Love sucks” Viktoria admitted. “What does Ksenka have that I don’t have?”
“She’s retired, her body has matured, she’s his age” Anna listed out. Viktoria turned to Anna..
“You’re not very good at soothing people, are you?”
“No. I suck at being a girl” she said. “Most boys don’t find me that attractive” she explained.
“But you’re so cute!” Viktoria exclaimed.
“Doesn’t matter” she said. “But who needs boys when you have the Olympics!” she sighed. “In four years”
“It’s a long road but you will take advantage of it”

The competition started the next day for the juniors. They had qualifications. Maria qualified first for the all around while Anna struggled and qualified 5th. It’s the first time she’s qualified that low for anything. For event finals she made all of them qualifying first, even with her lower scores. Juniors didn’t get scores in the 15’s like she could.

The all around was after all the team events (by the way the junior Russian team took the gold in the team final). Anna was ready to kick ass. A lot of the juniors weren’t well put together like she was and she was determined to win.
She gave up her spot in the bars and beam final to someone else so she could focus on AA, vault and floor. Her three favorite events.
All during the all around she was without Evgeny, instead Maria’s personal coach was with them. She didn’t have that edge without Evgeny but he kept his promises. She wanted to go home for a week.
On vault she scored a 14.8, on bars a 14.920, on beam a 15.000 and on floor a 15.222. Let’s just say she won over Enus Mariani by a significant margin; a little over three points. It was a magnificent win. Unfortunately Maria came in 6th, but she was still happy for Anna.
Anna was a bit depressed the night before thinking about how far she had to go before Rio but after this win she was embracing it. Four years IS a long time but at the same time she had so much time to mature. Right now she was clearly the best junior there, imagine how good she can be as a senior.
