My Captain

Old Friends

“William” I said in complete shock, “When did you get back?”
“Yesterday, your father said you would be here, seeing your man off.”
“My husband off, yes”
William looked puzzled
“My father did tell you I got married yesterday?”
“Um, No” William replied
“Sounds about right” I said rolling my eyes
I hugged William
“How have you been anyway?”
“Very well thank you. I have missed England and you”
“I have missed you to”
“Would you like to go for a drink and catch up?”
“I would love to”, I said taking William’s arm and walking out of the station
“Glad to see you have stopped crying”
“How could I cry when I have my best friend back?”
“Oh Dawn, you are still as sweet as the last time I saw you”
“Now William, no flirting, I am a married woman now”
William laughed, “I will never get used to the idea that you are married. I always thought it would be you and me who got married.”
I smiled as we entered the local tea shop
William went and ordered 2 teas as I went and sat down at a table near the window.
“Do you remember the last thing I said to you?” William asked
“To behave” I said with a glint in my eye
“No, not that one, the other thing”
“That you love me and always will”
“Yes that one”
“William I am so sorry, but really, I love James so much”
“How did you too meet? I mean I need to know the back ground for when he comes back”
“I giggled, ok then”.
I spent the next 2 hours telling William how I met James; how I knew instantly that I was meant to be with him, the wedding and the cottage that James had brought.
“I have no idea what the cottage looks like, I’ve only just found out about it”
“Would you like some help setting things up?” William asked
“I would love that” I replied smiling, “James gave me the key before he left”
“Let’s go then”
William and I left the tea shop, and headed to the cottage
“WOW” William said as we stood outside
“He went all out” I said completely shell shocked
The cottage was much bigger than I was expecting, with beautiful wooden frames in the windows and a red door.
I walked up the path with William following behind.
I put the key into the lock and turned it. The placed of freshly cut flowers.
“There’s a note here” William said passing me an envelope
“It’s from James” I said tearing open the envelope

My darling Dawn
This is our new home. I wish I was there to carry you over the threshold, just like I did last night. The world is so cruel, but I doubt I would have married you without war breaking out.
Please my darling wife, look after our home, make it ours, paint it, plant flowers in the garden, and make a nursery for our children.
My darling, there are another letter in this envelope, I DO NOT want you to open it now, hopefully you never will, but if something happens to me I want you to read the other letter.
You know what it would say, but I need to leave it for you anyway
I love you so much my darling wife, girl, and world
I cannot wait to have you in my arms again, make love to you again, kiss you and hug you
Till I see you again my love
James
William looked at me, “Come here”, he said holding his arms out to me
I went straight into William’s arms and just cried and cried
“I don’t ever want to open that other letter; I can’t even think it about opening it. If anything happened to James I’d die myself.”
“Don’t think like that”, William said, “James will be okay”
“I hope your right”
I left William’s arms and started looking around the cottage
I went upstairs and found James had already set up the master bedroom.
Another note as attached to one of the pillows
My darling Wife
As you can guess, this is our room.
I want you to sleep in here every night till I return.
I want you to dream about us and the family we are going to have
Love you
James

I lay on the bed, it smelt of James, every last inch of it smelt of him
William came in, “Sorry Dawn, think you might want to see this”
I got up and walked across the landing to the room where William stood
“The nursery I think”
I walked into the room
There was a crib in the centre of the room, with the finest lace I had ever seen, it took me a while to realise it was the same lace as my veil. There as a pram and a Moses basket in the corner and a changing table under the window.
“He’s thought of everything, yet again” I said laughing
“He’s a wonder” William smirked
“Hey” I said shoving him
William shoved me back and we started running around the house like we were kids again
We ran out into the garden
“Ah there you both are” I heard my father’s voice say
“Like you’ve never been apart”
“I have to go,” William said kissing my cheek, “I will see you tomorrow”
“Here at 8am, we have work to do”, I said grinning
“You got it” William said turning and heading up the path
After William had disappeared I looked at my father with anger
“I know what you are trying to do father, and it isn’t going to work. I love James, I want to be with James, we are married, and we are going to start a family as soon as he gets back. I love William as a friend, nothing more.”
“Dawn, think about what you are saying. What if James doesn’t come back? What then? I will not see my daughter alone for the rest of her life. William is a gentleman. He has loved you since you were children, everybody expected you to to marry.”
“I know, but I don’t love William that way. I love James; I’m in love with James. He is everything to me. I understand your concern father, but I am James’s, if he wants me to re-marry if anything happens to him, then I will, but if he doesn’t then I will not.”
I stormed into the cottage and slammed the door shut
My father walked away, he was lost for words. Never had I spoken to him like that, but I was married to James. I didn’t understand till now why he had agreed to see me marry James. It was to make it possible to keep James away long enough for me to fall for William, he must have known he as coming back
I went back upstairs to the nursery
James had left another note in the crib

My darling Wife
This is where our family will grow up
I can’t wait to have children with you
It’s all I could think about while you were gone, and all I will think about while I am away
Patience my love it will happen
All my love
James

“I need you here now James” I thought “Every piece of me wants you”
I put the letters in the top draw of my dressing table
Put the nightie James had left out and fell to sleep dreaming of our family to be
