Stardust Love

A Day In The Life Of Me

It was a breezy spring day as 16 year old Taffy Smith danced around in the store as her mother, Carmela Jones, picked out tonight's dinner.

"Taffy, don't play around where there's glass." Her mother said a little coldly.

"But mom, I'm always careful!" Taffy said a little upset as she sat down on the bench as her mother went to go look at the vegetables.

All her life, Taffy had a learning disability not otherwise specified. Taffy's mother, father, brother and sister tried their best to understand and relate, but they didn't. Sometimes their actions and words made things that much more harder and hurt at times for Taffy.

Taffy had trouble controlling her emotions and her actions most of the time, which caused her pain at school, home and at outings.

"Taffy, time to come to the register. I'm done picking out food." Carmela yelled from the front of the store.

Taffy was the middle child in her family. Her sister, Lucy, was 17, and her brother, Henry was 15. Taffy went to the cash register and started to play with the cashier's magazines as her and her mother were waiting to be rung up.

"Uh, could you get your daughter to stop?" The cashier asked Carmela as she started to ring up the items.

"Taffy, sweetie, don't play with the items on the shelf." Her mother said as she yanked Taffy away from the shelf.

When that happened, Taffy had a meltdown and started screaming. She wasn't used to being forcefully moved away from somewhere and associated that with being harmed.

"MOM STOP IT!" Taffy screamed as she cried, instantly causing a scene in the store as her mother sighed and started to cry herself.

As they put the groceries in the car, Carmela wiped her eyes and began the drive home.

"You know, I was only trying to move you away. I was not trying to hurt you...I wish you wouldn't assume I was." Carmela said as she fought back more tears.

"Mother, I love you really. I just wish you would tell me ahead of time before you do something like that." Taffy said as she realized the results of her outburst in the store.

Taffy came home and went straight in her room, started listening to some jazz and tried to tune out the world. Taffy's father, Darryl would be home soon. Darryl was a kind of strict father with Lucy and Henry but always made exceptions for Taffy. Darryl came home and Carmela ran and cried on his shoulder.

"What's wrong now?" Darryl asked, knowing the answer but wanted to ask anyway.

"Taffy had a meltdown in the store and screamed that I hurt her. I'm halfway done with her! I really am." Carmela said as she cried more.

Darryl sighed as he went in Taffy's room and sat by her. Taffy looked up from her mp3 player and took off her headphones.

"I didn't mean to have a meltdown in the store, dad. I just wish there was some warning before she does that." Taffy said, sad.

"Come on, I'll take you to get some ice cream.”

Darryl said as he brushed his brown hair away from his green eyes. Taffy put her dark brown hair in a couple of pigtails to get it away from her green eyes and went to go to the door when she was stopped by Lucy.

"I heard you screamed in the store from mom. Don't you know she loves you? Don't you know she cares about you? Stop putting her through trouble and be like Henry and I. But I guess you never will. Because you're a darn troublemaker." Lucy said meanly as she and Henry walked off.

Taffy slid down the wall and cried more as Darryl saw and picked Taffy up and cradled her in his arms.

"Shh. It's going to be ok, I'll talk to them later. Ice cream first.” Darryl said with Taffy in his arms as they walked to the door.

"Why does she get ice cream, dad? She's just a troublemaker and deserves to be sent to her room!" Lucy yelled.

Darryl put Taffy down on the couch and bought Lucy into a room.

"What in the world is your problem?! She does love us all but Taffy can't help what she does." Darryl said angrily.

Lucy, realizing the anger her father had at her words, silently shook her head. "I understand, I'll try better." Lucy said sadly.

"Thank you." Darryl said as he walked out of the door towards the car.

Taffy had a pretty good evening soon after getting ice cream.
