Whoever She Is

The Simple Things, They Make My Heart Go

The sun peaked through my curtains as I finished packing my suitcases. I could see the beautiful Arizona weather from my window. It might be 102 degrees outside, but my house was about 72 degrees. I pulled on the sleeves of my sweatshirt sweatshirt as I felt a chill run through my body. My mother walked into my room and sat on my bed.
“So what time are you headed to your father’s house?” she asked as she helped my fold clothes.
“Well, ya’ll are leaving at 4:30, so I will probably leave around that time too” I said while folding
“Are you sure you are okay spending the summer at your father’s while Steve and I are in Europe?”
“Yes mom. He lives 20 minutes from here. I can still come and see my friends here in Scottsdale. It’s not like I am going back to Mississippi and staying with Pawpaw and Nana! It’s just Tempe!” I laughed
“Alright sweetie. I just hate leaving you.”
“Mom it’s okay. I promise. It will give me time to see dad. I haven’t really got to send a lot of time with him since he became a partner at the law firm.” I smiled
“Okay. I’ll let you finish packing. Come downstairs when you are done.” She said as she hugged me and walked out of the room. I continued packing. I was excited about spending time with my dad over the summer. But I was upset that I wasn’t going to spend the summer before my senior year with my friends.
My name is Danielle McNabb. I am 17 years old. I live in Scottsdale, Arizona with my mother (Michelle) and step father (Steve). My mom is a stylist and my stepdad is a surgeon. My mom travels a lot for her work. Her and my step dad married almost a year ago. But work was so busy that they never got a honeymoon. So this summer they are traveling all over Europe. My dad (Terry) lives in Tempe, Arizona. It is about 20 minutes from my house with traffic. He is a partner at a law firm in Phoenix. He and my mom met when they were both students at University of Mississippi. Both families lived in the Jackson, Mississippi area, but they went to different high schools, so they never met until they had the same English class at Ole Miss. My dad was a football player for the school and my mom was a cheerleader. It was a southern fairy tale come to life. They graduated, got married, had my brother and me, and moved back to Jackson. They moved to Scottsdale when I was 14 because of my mom’s job, and they divorced when I was 15. My dad moved to Tempe to be closer to his office. My brother Grayson is a sophomore at Ole Miss. He is Pre Med. I plan on following him to Ole Miss next year when I graduate. Since we are 2 years apart, we are extremely close. Ole Miss is my dream school, so him being there is just another reason I am excited to go,
I finished packing and gathered by bags and walked downstairs. I sat the bags down near the door and walked into the kitchen. I could hear Steve bringing their luggage into the living room. I grabbed a bottle of water out of the fridge and a banana. I peeled the banana and threw the peel away and stepped into the living room. I was about 2 pm so we had about 2 hours to kill.
“Wanna watch Harry Potter?” Steve asked me
“Yes!” I jumped up to put it in the DVD player. This is one of the reasons why I love Steve. He always expresses interest in what I like. Unlike the guys before him that my mom dated, he cares about me. Since day one, he made it a point to know what I like, what I don’t, and to bond with me. He isn’t one of those stepdads that tries to replace your real dad. But he treats me like I am his own. I sat at on the couch next to my mom. I put my head on her shoulder and she played with my hair. My mom and I are extremely close. She travels a lot for work, but when she is gone, we talk at least 5 times a day. We watched the movie and I had to explain the series to my mom. She never could sit through one of these movies. Steve on the other hand, has watched more than a few Harry Potter movie marathons with me. When the movie was over, it was time for us to leave.
“I am gonna miss ya’ll” I said as I hugged my mom and Steve.
“We’ll miss you too sweetie. You can call us anytime you need to, we have international covered on the phone plan.” My mom said as she squeezed me
“Yeah kiddo, if you need anything all. You know it’s not too late to book you a ticket too” Steve added
“No! No! No! This is ya’lls belated honeymoon. I am not crashing it! I will be fine with dad” I stated as we broke apart from our embrace
“Alright! Alright!” my mom laughed
“I guess it is time for me to head to dads” I frowned as I grabbed my suitcase
“We love you baby. Be safe and have fun” My mom called as I walked out the door
“Don’t raise too much hell Dani!” Steve called
I laughed as I put my suitcase in the truck of my Audi I got for my birthday last year from Steve and Mom. I put my purse in the passenger seat, hooked up my iPhone to my stereo and pulled out of the driveway. The drive to Tempe wasn’t bad, I blasted All Time Low and enjoyed the drive . Traffic was to a minimum since it was a Saturday. I pulled onto my dad’s street. I saw him in the front yard with my dog Theo. Theo is my 4 year old blond lab. I pulled into the driveway
