Send Me Your Amnesty

Part Three: The In Between Years (Chapter 8)

February 2008 Dear Felicity,
I have one now too. Wow. They are growing up so fast. Can you believe I only have five more years until Amnesty’s 18 and I get to reveal myself?! Oh, shit! How I am I going to tell everyone?! Anyway, Joey—13. Teenager.
We took him and his friends out for the weekend on a skating adventure. We went to this really cool skate park where it’s not just skateboards on half-pipes and shit, it’s also an indoor skating rink and with a laser tag room. And it even had go karts. The kids had a blast! And so did I. ~Billie Joe

July 2008 Dear Billie Joe,
Amnesty is what I would call a typical obsessive teenage girl. She loves the Disney Channel. Her favorite shows are “Hannah Montana” and “Wizards of Waverly Place.” She also loves “High School Musical” and is now obsessed with the Jonas Brothers. They are coming to Indy at the end of the month, I think I might surprise her with tickets to their show. She hasn’t said anything about it, but I just want to surprise her. High School Musical is so popular that there are making a local production of it, and I think I’m going to take Amnesty to see it. She also loves Taylor Swift. Yep. I’m proud to say that I definitely have a teenage daughter in my house.
Should I feel guilty that haven’t really shown her my collection of old vinyls? I mean I’ve got some Beatles, Elvis Costello, The Ramones, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, U2, Nirvana, The Who, The Clash, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Michael Jackson, Madonna, John Lennon, Grateful Dead, Sex Pistols, The Stooges, Guns n Roses, Queen, Pink Floyd, REM, and Fleetwood Mac. Oh, and I can’t forget that “Dookie” vinyl. Now I’m not a fan of all of these artists, but I know a few songs from each, mainly my dad liked a lot these artists, and he kind of got me (and Karsh) into a love for music. He played in his own band and I liked listening to his music a lot. He got me a record player for my 10th birthday and then he started showing me all these records. It fascinated me. As a goodbye present (divorce), I guess, he gave me some of his favorite albums to remember him by. Honestly, the only thing that is holding me back is the fact that a lot of these artists influenced you and Green Day and I fear that she might ask…about…anything and everything. ~Felicity

August 2008 Dear Felicity,
DAMN! Holy shit Felicity, you have awesome taste in music! You would not believe how many bands off that list you gave me I basically idolize!? Almost all of them! Any artist that is considered punk or punk-rock off that list I probably listened to as a kid and still listen to today! God, you’re, like, perfect! It feels like I’m still talking to the girl hooked up with 15 years ago. If Adrienne had never come into my life, I probably would have married you—knocked up or not!
I’m sorry you’re so paranoid about Amnesty finding out, but she’s a teenager now, I think she can handle it. I understand you’re scared, but she’s missing out on a lot of great music, and by the looks of it, you seem a little annoyed at the music she listens to. The Jonas Brothers? Taylor Swift? Hannah Montana? Just saying… ~Billie Joe
