That's Hockey, Baby

Chapter 21

"I think this color would look beautiful with your eyes and skin tone.", Abby said, shoving a yellow dress into my arms.

"Yellows not my color, but I'll try it.", I said, as we continued to search for a dress for the Spring Charity Gala that was approaching in just one week.

After 3 hours of shopping and plenty of time spent trying on dresses, we both settled on a dress. I got a mint green ball gown while Abby got a navy blue mini dress.

"So hows life in lovers lane?", Abby asked me as we sat down for lunch.

I wish I could tell her everything. I was feeling so mixed up and confused this past month. Catherine was constantly texting me, going over the procedure for the break up. I was the one to break up with him, which was going to make it 100x harder on me.

"Amazing.", I lied.

"I'm glad.", she smiled sincerely, "I'm glad Pats finally found a good girl, he seems really happy…and he's been playing better."

too bad we're fooling everyone

"Abby, is it true that Patrick cheated on you while he was in LA?"

Two teenage girls asked, as they walked up to our table. I looked to Abby, shocked at these girls words.

"No. Don't believe everything you read on those stupid websites girls.", Abby said calmly.

"We know.", the brunette said, "You must be Ella, you're very private aren't you?"

I looked to Abby, shocked at the fact that these girls wanted to ask me questions now, as well.

"That's me.", I said meekly.

"You seem nice. Thanks for clearing things up, best of luck!", the blonde said, as she pulled her friend out of the restaurant.

"What was that about?", I asked Abby as soon as the girls were out the door.

Abby rolled her eyes, "Girls who read those stupid WAG blogs."

"Wag?"

"Wives and girlfriends….you never heard of it?"

I shook my head no.

"Good, you wouldn't want to. Anyways, its just a blog where people claim to know what is going on between sports players wifes and girlfriends, when really they know nothing. Its petty.", she shrugged.

I could tell the subject was touchy, and I wondered if she believed any of the posts had any truth to them. I let the topic go and we enjoyed the rest of lunch. After lunch I got home to my apartment. I didn't have any plans, and I couldn't help myself when I pulled out my laptop and googled "Ella Watson"

Kane has been living the good life as any 25 year old should, and our pursuit to find out information about his dating life has turned up a ton of gossip on quick relationships, and one night stands. However, Kane's mid twenties seem to have conjured up ideas of settling down as we recently got wind of Patrick Kane's girlfriend Ella Watson

E.W is not girlfriend material

She's gross and has no butt, just like she used to leech off her daddy, she's gonna leech off poor Patrick.

I saw her in water tower one day and she was yelling at the cashier because she didn't give her correct change…only missing 10cents!

She's snobby and stuck up and all she cares about is her image and money. She doesn't love him

Patrick looks miserable with her.

6.7/10…he could do so much better.

She's so pale, its disgusting, like get a tan

One word: Ugly.

Okay, thats enough, I shut down my laptop and curled up on my couch for a few minutes. I couldn't help but feel bad that people had perceived me that way; snobby and mean. Sure, there were some nice comments thrown in the mix, but most were negative.

"Hey, whats up?"

I sighed, "Do you think I'm snobby?" I couldn't help but ask.

"Where is this coming from?"

"Nothing, it's silly sorry.", I said, hanging up quickly, feeling embarrassed over the situation.

I picked my laptop and scrolled through some more websites that talked about me, as well as some of the other "WAGs".

I wasn't sure how long I was scrolling through these websites, but I was interrupted with someone knocking my door. I looked outside and saw it was already dark out, so I was reading for a while.

"What are you doing here?", I asked as I opened my door, standing in my doorway was Patrick.

"You sounded upset on the phone, are you okay?", he asked, sounding worried. I smiled at his protectiveness.

"Yeah, I 'm fine." I lied.

"You're a liar.", he said, setting his hockey bags down by the door and walking to the couch.

"Sure, you can come in." I joked, closing my door. He smiled as he picked up my laptop.

"Oh don-"

"El, please tell me you're not getting caught up in all this wag bs."

I smiled stupidly, "I'm trying not too. Two girls came up to me and Abby in lunch talking about it and Abby warned me but I was curious."

"All these people are just jealous, and I give you a solid 10/10.", he grinned and gave me a quick kiss.

I smiled, still feeling bad over the comments….I mean, who wouldn't? When people you don't even know are constantly calling you ugly, thats gonna bother almost anyone.

"Come on.", he stood up and reached his hand out for me to take.

I took it and pulled myself up, "Where are we going?"

"Surprise."

I rolled my eyes and ran to my room to change, I looked in the mirror and gasped at myself; I looked like a wreck. I had mascara all under my eyes and my hair was all over the place. I washed my face quickly and brushed my hair before slipping into This

"You listen to garbage music.", I said as I climbed into his death truck.

"And you're a hillbilly."

"A hillbilly you looovvvveeee" I smiled as I switched the radio station, "Where are we going?"

"Are you like a 20 questions game or something?"

"Maybe.", I smirked. He shook his head and continued to drive.

"How'd you know?!"

I stepped out of the car and practically ran to the door. I heard laughter as Patrick led me to the door.

"Roger told me it was your favorite place to go when you were upset, and who doesn't love ice cream."

"Crazy people.", I said matter of factly as we walked into the ice cream parlor.

"Can I take your order?", the teenage girl behind the counter asked us.

"Cookie monster in a waffle cone please."

"And you?", she asked Patrick.

"Peanut butter in a waffles good for me."

We paid for our ice-cream and when we got it, went outside to eat.

"This is huge.", Patrick admired, licking his cone.

"It's the best, and its all homemade.", I agreed, licking mine.

I shrieked as I felt cold ice-cream land all over my nose.

"Oh my god I hate you!" I pushed his cone into his face.

"It's on.", he said, taking a piece of ice-cream between his fingers and flicking it at me.

I took a bigger piece of mine and rubbed it in his hair, "We're even", I said in between laughs.

"For now.", he corrected me and smirked. I rolled my eyes as I continued to eat my ice cream.

"Did you find a dress for the gala?"

"Yes, but can we not talk about it."

"Live for today Ella, don't worry about the future.", he said, sensing my touchiness on the subject.

"You're right.", I sighed.

We finished our ice cream and drove back home. I felt exhausted and went straight to bed, the future was approaching faster then I would have liked.

"Hi daddy.", I said quietly as I opened my dads front door. He was sitting on his couch, looking tired.

"I didn't mean to wake you, its just I haven't seen you in a while it seems and I missed you.", I whispered as I walked to the couch and sat at his feet.

He gave me a weak smile.

"You're always welcome Ella. Is everything alright?"

I nodded. No, nothings alright. I love a boy who I'm being forced to break up with and my dads dying and he's completely okay with it.

"Good, do you mind if I take a quick cat nap? You can get some food if you want?"

"Of course." I watched him fall asleep quickly and sighed. His days were numbered and anyone who looked at him could see it. In the past, if I would come over, he'd offer me to come skating with him or shopping or lunch, anything…he usually hated staying home or still.
