The Day I Met You

017

My fingers froze around Jessie’s wrist. He cocked an eyebrow as he grin that crooked smile of his. I let go of his wrist and held my hand over the water. “Reylyn!” the male voice yelled again. Jessie held a finger to his lips as he snuck from the pool to the tree he’d precariously hidden behind before I arrived. I stifled a giggle as the yelling came closer.

“I’m here Danny,” I answered as I watched the breeze trickle up small waves.

He ran to the spot where I was sitting. His breath caught in his throat, hands were shaking, and he was sweating a little. “I thought something might’ve happened when Loza told me you wondered off.”

“No. I was just sitting here,” the bush to my left rustled. I stifled another laugh.

“Who’ve you been out here with for so long?”

“Long,” I questioned. I hadn’t been here that long.

“You’ve been out here for about four maybe five hours, baby.” I was stunned.

“We’ve been here that long,” Jessie stated standing in front of the bush. Danny laughed as he nodded.

“Come on. We’ll go have a party.”

“You guys go ahead. I think I’m going to stay here for a few more minutes.”

I watched the small waves lap in the pool as the footsteps faded into the background. I closed my eyes with my hand just above the water. I could feel the pulsing of the waves lifting to meet the palm of my hand. The grass crunched beside me as a hand covered mine. Fingers entwined with mine as our hands inched downward until the water covered them. My heart beat slowed to match the lulling waves as the breeze caressed my cheeks.

I opened my eyes to see the beams of sun reflecting the green. His face was finally serine, almost happy, as a small smile played on his lips. “Hi,” he whispered into the breeze. His fingers pressed against mine gently. I could see myself leaning in to taste those perfect lips…and then I was leaning in.

My mind screamed ‘WATER’ but my heart didn’t care. A bird squawked above our heads bringing reality crashing down on me. “What are we doing,” I gritted my teeth. I leaned away as far as I could without lying back as I pulled my fingers from his grasp.

“I’m sorry, Reylyn,” he started. I was on my feet in minutes.

“You’re married, and I’m beginning to think you take pleasure in trying to tempt me because you know I’m attracted to you,” I blurted. I whipped my hands on my jeans.

“You need me, Reylyn. That’s what attracts me. Casey has this whole thing down pat. She’s strong, takes care of the kids, and worries about me killing myself at work,” he spewed. I rolled my eyes.

“You need to go home to your wife and kids Loza,” I hissed. He jumped up and grabbed my wrists.

“Listen, Reylyn. My wife, Casey, told me she was thinking about leaving me. Coming here was my way of giving her space. I can’t go home just yet,” he pleaded. His eyes weren’t sparkling anymore.

“I don’t need you,” I spoke carefully, “Jamie will be glad to help me with the water thing, and so will Jessie. Don’t touch me anymore.” I snatched my wrists away from him before I sprinted back to my room.

A married man, who is supposed to be a hardcore Christian, is ruining my life.

“Lord, I need a drink!”
