Change Your Life

Epilogue

Knock knock

I turned to look at my window as a tiny hand stood dirtying my window.

I rolled the window down before leaning out to look at the person knocking on it.

“Yes princess can I help you?” I smiled as Dina nodded her head.

“Shaquille stole my doll and he wont give it back and mommy isn’t feeling well so she cant help me get it back” my 3-year old daughter rambled as I began to panic.

When I spoke to Riley two hours ago she seemed fine but now with Dina telling me that she wasn’t feeling well, I couldn’t help but panic about what had happened to my wife of eight years.

I quickly opened the door of the car before picking Dina up and marching into the house.

As I walked into the living room, I heard the squeal of ‘surprise’ ring out as even the little girl I held in my arms smiled back at me.

“I take it nothing is wrong with you?” I judged Riley as Shaquille ran to hug me.

“Happy birthday old man” the 10-year old teased before running out of the room and calling Dina to come play with him.

I let our two kids run off before joining my wife on the couch to give her a cuddle as a thank you.

“Really? Using the kids to carry out your evil plans?” I teased as she shrugged.

“I learned from the best. You used our first pregnancy as an excuse for us to get back together and 10 years on I just thought I’d return the favour” she mocked before cutting a slice of the chocolate cake they had bough to celebrate my birthday.

“So old man van Persie. How does it feel to be 35?”

I looked at her and listened to the noise coming from the play room before answering.

“It’s not so bad. I’m not gonna lie a few years ago had someone told me that I’d be a married man with two kids and on the verge of retirement, I would have cut their hand off. But sitting her, with you and knowing those rebels in there are happy, that makes me happy” I admitted as she blushed.

“Oh van Persie if you though your life has changed for the better, you obviously don’t know how much you’ve affected mine. I never would have imagined myself being content being just a mom and a wife but looking at it now, those are probably the best roles I will ever play” Riley beamed as she kissed me on the cheek.

I couldn’t help but smile back at her confession because our lives had taken a different course than the one we so stubbornly assumed it would follow.

But luckily for us, the new course was only for the better.

“Just for the record I’m very glad that you forced your way into my car that night in Amsterdam because baby you changed my life for the better” I confessed before I connected our lips.

Unfortunately for us our moment was interrupted by the squeals of ‘eeewww’ as Dina and Shaquille came running back into the living room and demanded a piece each of the birthday cake.
