Ean glared at me. “I cannot believe you. Why did you buy him that thing?”
He was complaining about Axel quietly playing Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s “Over the Rainbow / What a Wonderful World” on the ukulele that I bought him.
The sound of Axel’s soft, sad tone carried through the walls, and it hit me how disconnected he felt from everything.

“I have to tell him to stop,” my husband stated. He stood up, but I stopped him.

“Why?”
“If playing that ukulele helps him, then I’ll be damned if we tell him to stop.”
