A Flickering Light
In his final moments where the abysmal darkness enveloped his body in a numbing chill, there was only one thought - one person - that consumed his mind in its entirety.
"Back when she was still alive, I was afraid during a power outage as a kid and she told me something. She probably didn't mean for it to be figurative or anything like that, but I think back to what she said all the time whenever I'm having a hard time." She paused to remember her mother fondly, appreciating all the care she had given her in her early childhood.
"What did she tell you?" Bruce delicately inquired.
"Even in the black of night, a flickering light can be as bright and hopeful as the sun." She smiled and looked to Bruce, adding, "It's always stayed with me, and one day, I hope that maybe I can be someone's light."
He thought of her - her wonder-filled eyes, her alluring smile, and her inspiring personality, and a rip tore through death's black curtain that surrounded him, more tears slashing through until a warm light took its place.
She was so much more than that.
