Atrial Interlude

a syncopated rhythm

You can feel your heart beat when you put your hand to your chest; that slow syncopated rhythm of life running out through your arteries, back in through your veins.

You know this is true because when you breathe in, the oxygen only catches slightly in your throat as it makes its way into your lungs. It settles at the bottom of them like lead until moments later – moments that feel like days – you breathe it back out with a sigh of relief.

You’re aware of the life within your bones, the creaking and cracking creating an audible reminder that you’re able to move forward. The fluid inside the sockets cushions your joints, encouraging you to stretch your legs and step, one foot in front of the other.

Your body is alive and you know this. The cracks etched into you when they left are slowly beginning to heal and you can feel yourself becoming whole again – you feel yourself living.
