What She Found

Chapter 13

MONDAY, DECEMBER 17 - 9:00AM

Hayden opened her eyes, an unsettling feeling twisting her stomach. Quickly, she grabbed her phone and sent a text to Reese.

Something's wrong.

He answered immediately: What happened?

She bit her lip. I'm not sure, it's just a feeling. Can you come over?

On my way.

Hayden relaxed a little, but the sense of unease only increased as she looked around the bedroom; everything was in place, but still felt off somehow. Maybe things had been moved around, but she couldn't be sure.

On the bedside table, her phone chimed with a text. She glanced at the screen. It was from Hunter.

I'm being discharged today, but I'm unable to drive. Do you think you can come get me in an hour?

Reese—she erased the word and started over—Detective Danvers is coming by. I woke up this morning and felt like something was wrong here. But I can get you while he investigates

Her phone rang as she waited for his reply.

"Was anything taken? Why didn't you tell me?" Hunter said in greeting.

"Don't worry," she said. "It'll be okay."

Even as she said the words, she wasn't entirely certain of that.
