Close My Eyes,and Fly

Close My Eyes, and Fly - Lunch Time Drama

It was the sunday, the day before her summer school classes began, and Aaron sat alone in the corner booth of the coffee shop three streets over from her house. Aaron had a book resting on the table and a cool glass of ice tea sitting next to her. as she wandered into the imaginary world her mind had created, she took a pause from her book to take a sip she winced at the watered down ice tea she knew she would later add sugar too when the watery citrus taste became nauseating
Around her there was a family who had come in for afternoon brunch. Among their table was an assortment of napkins that had been used to clean up the spills that had ensued throughout their meal along with french fries that didn’t quite make it into the toddlers already full mouths. Aaron smiled, and thought about how much she missed her own family. She never thought she’d say it but she even missed Carter, the only person she knew would accept her flaws and all.
She imagined what they might be doing right now, maybe sitting on a beach in Cancun, maybe playing by a pool. Something exotic and fun and something that she unfortunately was missing out on. Thinking back, Aaron felt a sense of relief at the personal time she would have to perfect herself in the absence of her family. But she couldn’t help but shake the feeling that something about this summer would be drastically different than anything she could anticipate.
“Can I get you anything else?” Her thoughts were interrupted, and she looked up at the waiter who was smiling pleasantly down at her, pen and pad in hand. “Oh no, I’m fine” She smiled awkwardly touching the rim of her glass, as if to protect it from an unruly waiter who would snatch it from her anyway. The waiter smiled understandingly and walked off, and Aaron was left sitting alone once more in the comfort of her own booth.
She had just about finished the chapter to her book when she heard chuckling from the booth next to hers. She ignored it at first, turning the page and reading on but the noise grew louder and Aaron slammed her book closed in frustration. “Do you think maybe you could quiet down a little over there? I’m trying to finish a book for my English class” She called over the tall seats, straightening her back in attempt to view the culprits.
As she peered over the seats a french fry flew through the air and landed down her shirt, smearing ketchup along its path. Aaron gasped and yanked the mushy potato wedge from her shirt, before glancing up at the table that was now in hysterics. “What the hell is you-” she stopped mid sentence. The boys from the drugstore sat smirking her, pausing to hear the rest of her sentence. “aww sorry girly, we didn’t mean any harm” one of them spoke up, flashing her a goofy smile. His head was shaved bald except for the remnants of a mow hawk that had grown out and flopped to one side, in a depressing display of teenage angst. One of his friends jabbed him sharply in the side with their elbow and they all erupted in giggles once more.
“I don’t have time for this, you are all clearly incompetent morons” She growled, turning around to return to her table. Another french fry made its way through the air and Aaron turned around only to catch sight a hand reaching out and intercepting it before it collided with her already ketchup stained shirt.
Aaron stared into a pair of warm chocolate brown eyes that were observing her intensely as the figure chomped down on the french dry bullet. “Now that’s no way to greet a lady” The boy said in a condescending tone to the group of boys who were observing them. “Sorry Jack” one of the boys replied coyly, “We were just tryin’ to have some fun” another interrupted. None of the boys moved and the boy turned once again to look at Aaron.
“The names Jack” He said, holding out his hand. “Aaron.” she responded coldly, ignoring the gesture. “Could you possibly tell your idiot friends to calm down before I throw my ice tea on them?” the boys ooed teasingly, and erupted in laughter. Jack observed her curiously, “You’re the girl from the drugstore aren’t you? Sir Limps-a-lot was it?” He said with a smirk, flipping his hair out of his eyes. “Yeah, and you’re the asshole right? The one with nothing better to do but display his lack of intelligence?” She responded, folding her arms across her chest. Jack clicked his tongue at her disapprovingly, “Ooh aren’t you a feisty one.” he said, before turning around and casually shoving another french fry in his mouth. Aaron shifted her weight from one foot to the other. “Whatever, I don’t have time for this.” She said coldly before turning around once more to depart. Jack ran after her standing in her way while chewing a french fry rudely in her face.
Aaron could see now that he was a good six inches taller than her, and his broad shoulders gave him a macho appearance that Aaron couldn’t help but chuckle at. Aaron gazed up at him uninterested and he smirked. “I’ll see ya around toots.” He said with a wink, before stepping aside and rejoining his friends who were howling with laughter.
