The Beach House

“Well, looks like the last of it!” my father sighed wiping his dusty hands off, “It’s a shame you could wait out the summer,” Denise Jonas smiled,

I smiled back and slung my messenger bag over my shoulder, “I guess it’s just teenage angst, you know getting out there into the real world!” Paul Jonas smiled, I nodded mentally grateful for his suggestion.

“Well, all your boxes are loaded up into the truck ‘cept this one,” my father smiled heaving the box up into his strong arms, “I’ll wait by the car.” He whispered into my ear.

I nodded and looked up at the families I was leaving behind. My mother let out an expected sob and rushed me into a hug, swaying us back and forth. “You take care of your self out there James, and remember if this whole college thing doesn’t work out, your always welcome back.” My mother grinned through her tears.

I chuckled at her comment, “I thought you’d be begging me out of this house, plus weren’t you the one peer pressuring me into going off to college.” My mother rolled her eyes and brushed her bushy curls from her face.

“Bye James.” Dylan squeaked hugging me tightly, I soothed out his hair and bent down to kiss his cheek. “Don’t worry kid, they have wonder Christmas presents down in New York City, you’ll be the happiest person alive on Christmas.”

Dylan let a weak smile flaunt his beautiful baby face features, “Well I know for one I’ll miss having another girl around here, I think you were the only thing keeping me feeling young!” Denise chuckled engulfing me into a warm hug,

“Oh Denise everyone knows you’re the feistiest one around here!” I winked as I held back my tears, Denise let me go but not before whispering a tid bit into my ear, “Anytime you want to drop in-please don’t shy away-Joe would love it,”

I couldn’t help but shudder at the mention of his name. Paul Jonas was next to wrap me up in his tight embrace, “You’ll do wonderful things,” he grinned.

I would miss the loving families I was going to leave behind,

Frankie walked slowly up to me looking down at his feet, “You’ll come and visit me right?” I couldn’t help but nearly breakdown at that point.

“I will make sure to come visit my favorite Jonas!” I grinned. Frankie giggle and hugged me tightly, well my waist tightly.

“If that’s it-“ my mother started but was cut off my a couple of boys scrambling down the
Wooden stairs,

“Jamie wait!” two familiar voices echoed through the house, I held back my tears as only two curly haired boys came into view.

“We just wanted to say goodbye,” Nick stated hugging me softly, “Joe’s beating himself up about this.” Nick whispered into my ear.

Kevin was next to hugging the living daylights out of me, “He’s truly sorry.” Kevin muttered.

“If he’s truly sorry he’d be down here.” I mumbled breaking the embrace.

“I’ll miss you guys,” I replied shortly, simple and sweet, simple and sweet.

“And I’ll call when my plane lands!” I grinned, holding back my tears .

Hugging everyone one last time I ventured out to the car. I couldn’t help but take a minute to look at the house I truly and deeply loved.

It was old, and beautiful with a fresh smell of maple and honey. The blue paint was beginning to chip and it looked like the door’s hinge still needed some fixing.

Next year.

I reminded myself. All the lights in the house seemed to be off, all except one. The one light that shined through the one room that held the one boy who refused to say goodbye.

Well Joseph, goodbye.
