Avril Lavigne - Punk Rock Princess - Comments

• Hmmm...interesting bio, but you forgot to mention there has always been controversy surrounding Avril since Day 1. I remember when she first started, she classified herself as "punk" and then later took it back, claiming to never have said she was punk. Then there is the fact that she acts like a spoiled brat, even today, even though she is like 25 years old. I seem to remember hearing she picked fights with Hilary Duff, Michelle Branch, Vanessa Carlton, and I believe Kelly Osbourne as well.

• Avril was my idol when I was growing up. I looked up to her, I thought she was awesome. But she has changed now, I can't stand her new album.
I prefer and miss the older Avril.

I don't think she has ever claimed to be punk. She obviously isn't. She's more like Britney Spears these days.

• Avril Lavigne is the worst thing to happen to punk music since the death of Joe Strummer.
Chantal Kreviazuk is a woman, not a man. Please get your facts straight.
Avril is not punk. She is pop. She is the epitome of antiseptic punk poserdom.
Want some real punk? Go listen to the Buzzcocks, Black Flag, Minor Threat, the Casualties, the Clash, D.O.A, DIY, SSD, Dead Kennedy's, Subhumans, and so on and so forth ...

"I created punk for this day and age. Do you see Britney Spears walking around wearing ties and singing punk? Hell no. That's what I do. I'm like a Sid Vicious for a new generation." - Avril Lavigne, Seventeen Magazine

When she actually learned who the Sid Vicious was (intensely hardcore bassist for the Sex Pistols, 1977-1979), she followed up with:

"People are like, 'Well, she doesn't know the Sex Pistols.' Why would I know that stuff? Look how young I am. That stuff's old, right?" -Entertainment Weekly

And hence, she has become one of the largest detractors to the modern punk movement.

• Yeah, but it was that kid we all fell in love with. Adults who behave and act like kids are brilliant, fun and respected. I love her music and the song 'When You're gone' is like a mile stone for someone special to me, but this whole new look just isn't the punk princess we all loved.

• C'mon, she IS a sell out.... who changes his style every year? She's such a poser... she changes for money...
She is a PUNK?! People, please, you've got to be kidding me! Only MTV could think of her as punk! Her music was just ... soft rock? I don't know how to call it... but now she is just playing pop.
She really sucks.
And the worst thing is that her 2nd name is Ramona xD

• I so glad I'm not the only one who knows she isn't punk...
February 11th, 2008 at 06:01am

• She's not punk... Punk is Black flag, Nofx, Bouncing souls, The misfits, ect....
I like her music, but its not punk.
She's a pop singer/ sometimes rock.
I think some people think that what you wear is the only thing that makes punk punk, but its not about that.
Punk is a way of life not a fashion statement

• Agreees with fnksgirl and Valium Freak.
From my point of meaning.
Punk is being a rebel - take Green Day;
now that's punk.

But I do see that she's being critisized.
She changed and she grew up;
we should really just back off...
And as for her genre - I classify her as
rock or atleast pop, not punk.
December 26th, 2007 at 08:05pm
• She sucks.
end of story.
She couldnt have been a sell out because she was never punk to begin with.
its pop not punk.
Grilfriend is one of the most annoying songs i've ever heard.
December 21st, 2007 at 04:53am
• umm she was born in napanee... not in belleville :|
December 15th, 2007 at 05:13pm
• -laughs-
I gotta agree with Valium Freak.
She was not "punk".
Ever.
Punk is a state of mind, an essence, a movement, a revolution, natural rebellion and a way of life.
A song sung by a canadian little girl wearing a tie and converse about a "Sk8er Boi" is not punk.
Punk has heart, soul, it moves you.
This? Is not moving in the least...

She's a pop singer, understand your genres first.
December 15th, 2007 at 02:19pm
• Punk is genre and movement. She was never punk and she has convinced girls that wearing black makes them punk. I own a couple of her songs but she is just good pop.
December 12th, 2007 at 05:06am
• Ok, punk obviously means something different to everyone. In my opinion, Avril Lavigne is not and never was punk. But hey, she still made some great music. Actually, her first album helped me through a lot and I'll always love it :)
November 28th, 2007 at 10:05pm
• v Yeah me too. But people can't help it. They enjoy criticizing others. And... Valium Freak, she was punk. Maybe she toned down a bit but, you can still compare her music to punk/rock even though it sounds more like pop. ;)
