So, I don't think that we're losing any intelligence by using chat-speak. I do find it annoying. But if someone who chat-speaks is stupid then they were stupid to begin with.
Things like "Lol." or even "Omg." are okay. It's when you have someone saying: "u" "tht" "cuz" "waz" "wuz" "b" "c u l8ter" and crap like that.
And don't, for the love of cookies, don't write a story in chat-speak.

i think that sadly im one of those people that have been sucked into the texting craze, haha, i never leave my phone. which is kind of sad :(. but if you think about it, our grandkids are going to have there own way of talking, and were going to be just like our grandparents are to us.

I liked how you added in that extra little book joke at the end. added a little bit of humor to it :D

I honestly can't say the last time I actually CALLED someone.
I even text my manager at work to let him know I won't be able to come in.
On about average each month I send out 20,000 texts and recieve 40,000.
You'll never see me without my phone in my hand...and God forbid it dies.
I literally freak out.

I don't use chatspeak except LoL and those kind of things, I definitely refrain from using them on the internet or in my verbal actions. I find it premature and childish.

I always say OMG. XD
Well, grannies had their time. We are having our own generation. Own style. I just kind of shook off the fact that the earlier generations are better. >_>;;

~*~

I was never been fascinated in texting. They hurt my thumb. :\
Besides, people say things in texting and does the other in face-to-face. I just use cellphones whenever I'm going out to be able to contact my parents and that's it.

I like many other people do not use 'text-chat' in my text messages unless the message is going to end up three pages and I don't want to type it all out. Honestly, I don't like text messaging but on my phone it is cheaper to text, plus my fear of calling people adds to that. Anywho, what is worse is when we use text chat in conversations. Not many do it, but its getting more and more common. For example I have a friend who says "omg" in real life. It drives me crazy.

I use regular writing in text. I use 'lol', 'omg' and a bunch of other ones, but I usually try to go for the whole word.

Well, I only use chat speak when I'm texting, and that's only sometimes. It just depends on how long the message is.
And I hate talking on the phone...like I despise it...
I don't know why, I just do. I never have liked it.
So, I pretty much agree with iluvgospel4eva on that.

I only text because I have a pre-paid phone and it is just way cheaper to text than it is to call a person haha. Though I hate how people seem to just sit around all day with their phone glued to their hands texting all day. I have on friend that if I don't reply within five minutes, she'll text me again atleast three more times no matter how many times I tell her that I don't have my phone with me half the time. Another friend complains how I don't text him enough. :/ Seriously, I have a life. I have other things to do other then sit around texting all day. Well that is the end of my rant haha.

I have to say, I never really found chat-speak to be this big of an issue. I always thought it was fine as long as it stayed online and on phones. I actually think its much more acceptable for phones than it is for message boards and facebook. However, phrases like "omg" or "wtf" are appropriate online, or at least in IM conversations. WTF actually has a kind of different connotation than the actual three words.

I suppose the problem comes up when these words and phrases start to seep into everyday conversation, written pieces or class assignments. My friend once showed me something very sweet that she wrote, about loss of innocence, but it was written in chatspeak. When I mentioned this to her, she said "lol itz ok i wrote it on word". No lie. Good article, though. :)

I must say I'm kind of over texting at the moment and am ringing people on my phone if I need to have a conversation with them. Annoyingly enough its costing me quite a bit... Silly phone plans

Yeah, I'm totally sick of the IM talk. I mean, for phones and junk, fine. But people are starting to bring it into the real world, and they comment on Mibba profiles like that, and it's like...GAAAH! *pulls hair* You can't read a story that's written with chatspeak! Half these people don't even capitalize, what happened to that? Seriously.

I don't think it is ruining the language. If you haven't noticed, the language is constantly changing. Look at how they talked in the 1600's. Even less time has passed since the 80's for example, and the vocabulary is very different from how it is today. I've never seriously heard anyone regularly use the phrases "Thou art" or "Gag me with a spoon".

To talk to one of my friends who lives over an hour or so away from me, I text. We love it, but still talk normally and text grammatically correct.

I absolutely hate my phone,
yet I love it too.

We have a love/hate relationship.

This kinda made me think about this Fresh Prince of Bel-Air episode. Will gets this fancy job and comes home with this new "cell phone" and its like a freaking brick. Like five pounds and the size of a small cat. It was great :]

I find text talk annoying outside of phones. I only text talk when I'm texting.
On the computer I type my words out because it's easy too and when I'm writing notes to my friends. And I find it so annoying also when they use "Omg" or "lol" in a when they speak in person. I'm just really over this whole chat-speak thing.
And I would always rather read a real book any day of the week then use an app. that's ridicules to even have a book app in the first place.

Oh, Lord, I totally agree with you.
The book app made me laugh.
Why on earth we need that, instead of a good old paperback, is beyond me!
Good article!

oh, thank god.

Someone with a brain.
I can't stand text talk. I'll use it once in while if I'm being sarcastic, but other than that I hate it. I agree with you 100%.

Very nicely written article, by the way!

HAha I only text at school, or if I need to tell my mom something and she is at work
Although "Text-Talk" used to be call "Chat-Speak"
And in not an invention of a cell phone.
