I don't care if it's original of fan-fiction because if the story line is good then I'll read it.
I read a fan-fiction and I thought that it could be an original story if they just changed the character's name.
I've been looking for a good original story but all I keep finding are slashes, incest, 'I'm-a-girl-in-an-all-boys-school' crap - which by the way is SO unbelievable it's not funny, and high school romances of the cool kid and the loner getting together.
It is so hard to find a story about adults! No character is over the 25 mark! It seems that every romance is a 19 year old in the big world falling for an older guy. Why is it that these writers are afraid of writing about an older demographic?
I don't know.... anyway; good article.
I don't think I really pay attention to ff or of. I think if the writer is good enough, then I'll read their story. Personally, I find it a bit silly to compare the two. It's like comparing different flavors of snapple. Sure, one may be more popular, but they're both great.
I usually go with fan fiction because at least I feel I can't be disappointed with them. I mean when I come across a fan fiction that's particularly bad and horribly written or the plot is just regurgitated I'm not disappointed because its a fan fiction. However, if I came across a supposedly "original' fiction that's nothing but a regurgitated plot of an original work or anime or one of those "I'm the only girl at an all boy school filled with hot guys that all want to bang me" or overly emo/angsty love stories with some paranormal mumbo jumbo thrown in plots that I get deeply disappointed because I know for a fact that just like a fan fiction it would get way more reviews and raves than a well written, really original work. Unfortunately that's all I see on writing websites anymore.
Good article, but I felt there could have been more put into it for some reason. Just my opinion.
Totally agree with ItsAuden.
It's saddening to see the same thing over and over again when looking for a good story. I'm tired of fan-fiction. Yes, some is good, as is that true with original fiction. I'm just annoyed with looking for stories and they're mostly fan-fiction or the stories with like 69 authors and three words per chapter.
Sorry, but there needs to be more original fiction. I wrote a fan-fiction once (rather poorly for my standards mind you) and it got raitings out my buttox. But a story that I poured energy into the first like ten chapters, nothing. It's infuriating.
Original Fiction > Fan-fiction (personal opinion mind you.)
I think I prefer fan fiction, simply because it's easier to imagine the characters. As dumb as it sounds, I never really get into original fiction because it's too hard to take seriously.
This is a great article. I myself am a fan of both original fiction and fanfiction, except I'm EXTREMELY picky about what I read, and I make no exceptions for fanfiction. Unfortunately a lot of original writing is complete crap, and it's easier to come up with bad characters. And just... ugh. I love it, but finding decent original writing online is pretty difficult.
Not to say that fanfiction doesn't have its own bad characters (cough cough, called OC) but you're right. The gratification of two characters finally getting to be together after a show or something never lets it happen is nice, and it's something great about fanfiction. Once the actual show/game or whatever is over (or the celebrity is dead... though that's a different matter), it doesn't have to actually be over. I love Final Fantasy 7, so I read a lot of the fanfictions. But there's a lot of crap out there...
Good article! It could've been organized a little bit better, and I'm sure some more unique thoughts could've been introduced, but it was pretty good otherwise! Nice job. :)
I whole heartingly agree with ItsAuden no one anymore really wants to pay attention to Original Fictions, I write them, and personalty love them! but I mean I could never write a good enough fanfiction, because I am one of those writers who study's before I writes, like if my character is afraid of the dark, I would spend hours reading about it, watching how people react with it, and ech, and having premade people would drive me crazy, because I would never feel as though I was doing them proper justice. although, sometimes, I feel like I have to pull character's out of my butt, so really I am going Switzerland, both types of writings can suck, and both can be magic !
"However, those who write fanfiction will probably get more comments overall, because the fan base of the celebrity/fictional character tends to at least partially translate over to the stories. "
